Facebook Can't Build The Metaverse.

What is the Metaverse?

This term was coined in a sci-fi book by Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash in 1992. The setting of this book takes place in a dystopic future where the real world has been trashed. No one wants to live there. Rather everyone lives in the metaverse: a digital augmented reality somewhat like The Matrix that people opt-in to on purpose to escape the harshness of reality.

Defining the Metaverse fully is no easy task, and is open to interpretation. Needless to say the themes of virtual/augmented reality connected to the Internet are quite prevalent. However, whatever any of us thinks about the Metaverse in theory, the actual implementation and ramifications of such an interconnected web of technologies can never be fully predicted in advance. Chaos Theory demands it! In addition, this is a virtual world that will be constantly evolving, so the definition will also evolve over the decades to come.

Everyone is making a fuss about Facebook cornering the market on this mystical Metaverse idea. Facebook is pumping billions into it, we gotta make sure they don't get a monopoly! In my mind, this is a nonsensical fear rooted in delusion.

Think back to the Internet in the 1990's. Back then all the corporations were obsessed with owning the Internet. They wanted to create THE INTERNET; The walled garden that they would unilaterally control and everyone would have to pay them to use. These permissioned networks were called Intranets and Extranets, depending on how locked down they were. Venture Capitalists poured billions of dollars into this concept of owning the Internet, and they all failed miserably. Tough luck, imperialists! Better luck next time.

Enterprise Blockchain

It was not so long ago that all the corporations were saying, "Blockchain not Bitcoin," while trying to create their own walled gardens that they would unilaterally control. Sound familiar? Billions were spent, and billions were wasted.

So why when Facebook says that they are going to dump $10B into the Metaverse does everyone freak out like it's a bad thing? IT'S A GREAT THING!

THE BEST!

Just like corporations pumping billions into enterprise blockchain, so too will they pump billions into the Metaverse. And what will those trained employees do when they realize they can quit their jobs and earn ten times as much being their own boss as freelance developers of the ACTUAL METAVERSE? LOL!

It is absolutely ridiculous to think that a stupid corporation like Facebook could somehow corner the market on something like this. It's quite obvious that crypto will be the foundation of the Metaverse and the entire Internet itself. Crypto is all about community and leveling the playing field and transparency and open source collaboration and... Does that sound like FACEBOOK to you?! Like lol c'mon stop making me laugh.

Conclusion

The metaverse is bigger than Facebook. Facebook is a small drop of water in the vast ocean of Metaverse. Facebook could be washed away into oblivion at anytime and everyone would just forget it ever existed, or more likely make jokes about its existence before it was totally forgotten.

Stop worrying about trifles that don't exist.
No single entity can tame this beast.
That's the entire point of decentralization.
That's the entire point of flat architecture.

We could totally use some major help in figuring out some way to implement this! And this book has been a phenomenal inspiration. A lot of people look at me oddly when I reference this book. Personally I thought this was a classic......

How can people really be this illiterate.

Basically we will be able to pay people to do all kinds of training.
From basic gym stuff to "ninja camp" 😁

If we are rebuilding society from the ground up, then we want our citizens to be healthy... rather than the bullshit system we live in today where the healthcare system profits from unhealthy citizens.

Nice to see that other people are thinking about this.

That's the entire reason why I am starting this church. And I'm definitely looking for some help and support from like-minded individuals.

Snow Crash is one of my favorite SF novels. It is from 1992, but still not outdated - amazing!
If you like this, you have to read "Diamond Age", it is even more brilliant!

lol I still gotta read Snow Crash :D

I borrowed it from someone and never started it.
Returned without reading.

Such blasphemy, much wow.

What a shame, this is really a must-read.
But if to choose, I would pick rather Diamond Age, as this goes even beyond the Metaverse and is even more visionary!

I’ve got to re-read Snow Crash. It’s been probably 25 years or so, so I’ve forgotten so much of it by now that it would almost be new. Gotta love having the main character named Hiro Protagonist. 😀

Facebook won't be the metaverse but they want to be the gatekeepers to the metaverse. However I don't think it is possible since there aren't the only way to access the internet.

The metaverse will be so closely tied to high-end technologies for decades. I own a Quest 2 and while it's amazing, no one wants to wear that thing on their head for hours at a time. I'll doubt we'll see affordable long-life batteries, small form factor, and high-resolution hologram screens ever honestly at a retail level.

I am glad that a company like Facebook is finally taking it seriously but we are a long way away from any meaningful progress with the metaverse. We'll have plenty of small developers working on metaverse technologies but there has to be a giant mega-company in the game for it to exist.

This is how a venture capitalist thinks. This is how a business executive thinks. This is how legacy capitalism operates. The metaverse is next gen web3 tech. It will be self funded by open source tech, DAOs, and DACs.

And don't worry about that heavy headset weighing you down.

You can just jack-in directly to the brainstem, lol.

I wonder why people like to keep prolonging things?, In my own mind, I'm 9/10 certain that "We would start seeing "groundbreaking" projects before the end of next year regarding this subject (metaverse).

Maybe this was the cog that would enable "developers and companies alike" to start thinking outside the box regarding VR and digital spaces?. Because yeah, Virtual Reality and Blockchain wasn't implemented together previously, doing so now, we might start getting different results.

At least, the technology world has shown us time and again, that this might not always be the case. Oculus for instance was a legit Headset technology before Facebook acquired them in 2014, and of course refined it.

It'd be great if all small developers can put their brains to work anyhow possible, and whoever discovers something great? we all end up prospering from it.

I hope you are right and intend to make sure Facebook is destroyed, hopefully before they make much headway in trying to monopolize the metaverse.

BTW: In Hebrew “Facebook Meta” means Facebook is dead.
“meta” is the feminine for “is dead”.

Facebook will have to make legendary concessions to stay relevant.
If such concessions are made we might actually want them to hang around.

IIRC Hive MIRA technology was based on Facebook's open source RocksDB.
It's not like they have NOTHING to offer.
Just have to force their hand.

@apshamilton LOL! That was a perfectly chosen name.
I think people should refer to facebook as their original name: LifeLog.
Don't you agree, @edicted ?

From my all time favorite book “snow crash”

Hmm, just perfect. It can be soo annoying to hear them say those stuff of course. I mean, it's like they are trying to monopolize every technology that matters to keep getting fatter (that's what's in people's minds when they hear $10B, including mine). BUT, the way you just explained it makes perfect sense.

And what will those trained employees do when they realize they can quit their jobs and earn ten times as much being their own boss as freelance developers of the ACTUAL METAVERSE? LOL!

let them go and spend shit, they are literally setting their employees' free xD. But well, we are in for a ride. I wonder what the "NEXT BIG Metaverse Blockchain Hype Company/Studios" that would make millions will be?
