Although for many years the topic of inflation in Venezuela has not ceased to be present; these days in HIVE we will talk a lot about it, thanks to the initiative of @rutablockchain.

I would like to start with some curious facts, for those who read us from other countries and then continue with my personal story in this great Hyperinflation.

  • In more than 20 years of Bolivarian revolution, the Bolivar (national currency) has been stripped of 8 zeros. At the time of this post the Bolivar Soberano (new name) is equivalent to 1,600,000.00 BS which means that if we add the zeros removed by decree, in reality one dollar is 160,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 BS.

  • Although the bolivar is the national currency, few businesses accept it in its physical form (bills).

  • Coins in Venezuela ceased to exist many years ago.

  • Banknotes are cash, but they are used to pay for public transportation. Many people buy them even at double their value. That is, they digitally transfer 1,000 bolivars to receive 500 bolivars in bills.

  • Most of the credit cards stopped working, because they were left with consumption limits of less than $1 USD.

  • In three years, we went from making a market for a month with $20 to making a market for less than a week with the same amount.

  • At the time of this post, the minimum salary is 1,200,000 BS, which is equivalent to $0.75 USD per month. That is what public employees and pensioners earn.

  • The passport went from costing $5 USD to cost $200 USD overnight.

  • The government criminalized the dollar. It was a crime to say the price in the black market and people started to call it "lettuce". Now the government itself accepts dollars for official procedures.

My Story

Since the price regulation arrived, I saw a strong crisis coming. The government determined what the profits of the companies should be. Of course in an arbitrary and centralized way with good old Dad State.

Little by little, companies began to resent the crisis and adjust their business models. Some eliminated products, others reduced packaging costs or eliminated ingredients, for example Coca-Cola and Pepsi removed sugar from their drinks, also because they were scarce.

In my case the crisis hit me a little later than the rest and I think I overcame it earlier than most. It was because I got clients in other countries and started exporting my products. However, due to the fear and stress that this sudden success generated in me, I didn't know how to handle it and it collapsed.

The fact that my business slackened had nothing to do with hyperinflation; on the contrary, I took advantage of it because my costs were cheap compared to any other country. I also sold cheaply so that the distributors in those countries would make a profit and would always be happy.

For example, a box of $200 USD worth of merchandise could be shipped for $5 to Miami or $8 to Spain, by DHL.

I knew that this would change, because no company could survive with that; in fact, DHL told me that they were still in the country out of gratitude, because during the crisis of the twin towers, the Venezuelan market kept the company going.

However, I did not see this reality materialize. The change in shipping prices came after I made a pause in my business to look for online income.

I spent about a year and a half looking for something to generate income online. That period of time was the most difficult of my life. I lost more than 10 kilos because I ate little and badly. I spent from my savings because I had no income, but little because I had to stretch it.

I paid for my son's school on time, so that it was devalued with the currency. It was the only way to keep paying and it's not something I'm proud of.

I went years without buying clothes. Thank God in 2014 I traveled to Chile and spent a good amount on quality clothes that I still wear.

In some part I think it became easier for me than for many. This because I was no longer employed and could look for income options. Also, having lived in Spain, I was used to always converting prices to Euro or Dollar and that made a lot of things clear to me. Plus I always got income in dollars.

Thank you Steem HIVE

Although my beginnings were in Steem, I only feel grateful for HIVE, since the community is here. Everyone who voted for me from the beginning and after, came to HIVE. This is why I feel so much gratitude for this blockchain.

The very moment I start, I begin to see a change in my life. It was from going from going hungry to helping others improve their finances. The blessing of HIVE is that even though you don't have enough money to help someone, you have the information and the tools to change their life. Of course if they want to and if they do their part.

So there I was, watching all those people complaining on twitter, that inflation was eating them up; but you talk to them about HIVE and they ignore you. People are just where they want to be.

What I Learned from Hyperinflation

I think the best thing to do is to save. I feel extremely proud that despite everything I went through I never spent my satoshis. That after all the years of bear market, I NEVER made power down.

Saving allows me to see now, some wonderful fruits with the BTC at over 30k and I know I will also see them when HIVE reaches $10.

This was the best lesson, since I was not used to saving because of my culture. Venezuelans have never saved and even less in their own currency. After educating myself financially I understood the value of saving and knowing cryptocurrencies taught me how to do it. Because who wants to spend them when you know they are going to go up?

I am also thankful to Dash, as thanks to several submissions to the DAO, I benefited a lot financially.

What Advice Would I Give

The advice I would give to someone who is going to go through hyperinflation, is to educate themselves financially. Invest in education, it's the one thing you can't lose. State-of-the-art knowledge and information is the best thing in a crisis.

Before I would have told him to buy dollars, but now I would surely tell him to invest in BTC. The one I would never tell you is to invest in real estate, since here they fell more than 50%. Of course if you have a lot of money, it is a great deal as long as you buy them at the worst time of the crisis, waiting years for the storm to pass.

I enjoyed this challenge and look forward to seeing your story, so I invite you to participate. Also especially @fermionico @berlissanoja @zullyscott

Excelente historia, me gustó mucho!!!

Me gustó tu historia.
