Shopping Using A VPN

source

This morning my kids went shopping using the VPN we have and managed to save close to $50. The Kaspersky security we had on our computers had expired so it needed renewing.

The at least used their brains this time and looked for another country that was cheaper than South Africa. They eventually purchased the Total Security package which covers our 5 computers plus they needed a double package as they also put it on the computers at work. They eventually paid $47 compared to $94 plus tax if we had been honest where we live.

What doesn't make sense if most homes have a VPN these days and masking where you live is fairly common. Making a standard price world wide would surely be better than having areas or countries with double the rates just because they can get away with it. Then again if you go to the Kaspersky site without VPN enabled it takes you to the home page of whatever country you are in already so you don't have many choices and would think that price is just the standard rate everyone pays.

Obviously this works only for buying software which you can install as having something delivered wouldn't work too well if you said you live in Alaska and wanted it delivered in South Africa. Alaska funny enough was where the cheapest Kaspersky price was and varied so much globally which I believe it shouldn't.

Our work email was compromised a few weeks ago which is never a great thing and we are waiting for that to be sorted out by our service providers. Mine as far as I know was fine, but they are double checking making sure and is more of a nuisance than anything else right now and conveniently there is no work as we are shut for the holidays. I am sure they have some type of security or you hope they have as otherwise why and how was it compromised? I had to download some stuff around about the same time this happened from a client asking me to join a site in order to be part of the negotiations. I don't think it was me, but I had no protection for about 10 days which was rather dumb and why I want two computers separating work and my crypto.

We had a VPN originally for when we download as we have known friends and family receiving threatening letters from the likes of Disney in the past. Our television set up has Surfshark installed and we watch Netflix from America as the local version is missing so many things. I don't feel so bad about this as we pay for the local version so why not upgrade and get the works.

I'd even think 97$ is standard rate myself, Saving up to $50? That's like 2 weekly allowance of many folks over here, that's to show how it's quite crazy that the people living in some African countries are charged way too high for something they could get cheaper. I mean what are the yardstick that decides these things? It's totally crazy

I have no clue why we get penalised for living in Africa as it does seem that way. Maybe they just get away with it as many have no clue they are paying more for exactly the same thing compared to others.

It's reason why sometimes you're making money, but becoming less valuable in valuation. It's crazy, I'd eventually move out of Africa,it's just time and money.

It is only a matter of time and I am out of here as it is no good as you get screwed literally everywhere you look. I hate greed and there is more greed here than in other countries yet the majority of people are poor which shouldn't be the case. 5% take 90 percent of everything and don't share their sweets.

That’s a smart use of a VPN, one of very few viable use cases it has actually.

Be extremely careful with VPN, they are not protecting anything and might be used as a giant honeypot/keylogger.

Woo. Really then I will remove mine off my computer now as that is no good. Thanks for that advice and information.

I’m just saying VPN are often used for something they are not meant to.
People thinking they’re protected behind a VPN are fundamentally wrong.
And I’m talking about the honest providers here. Dodgy ones will keylog their users and charge them a monthly fee for that :D

I have been really happy with Nord VPN over the past couple of years. I never thought to use it like that to get better pricing on items. I haven't purchased AV software in years. I use the suite that is built in with Windows and it works very well. It is enterprise grade and many large companies use that. If I were to purchase AV again I would probably go with Sophos. It is a really solid suite and what I run on my Android phone.

I am clueless with this stuff to be honest and go with what the family is buying. Kaspersky was good up until now so we saw no reason to change.

I used to love Kaspersky and used it myself for a while, but lately I have been concerned about their ties to Russia. I think I mentioned this before, but I know that government agencies in the US are not allowed to run Kasperky products.

The use of Vpn is a common thing in Nigeria. I think countries not fully developed like the USA and most European countries love using it.

Truth be told I don't like the use of Vpn but they are sites that my Nigeria Ip won't make me access.

I second your view that all prices of things should be equal worldwide so as to limit the use of VPN to cut cost

Cyber security is of utmost importance! But it's not fair to charge those in Africa more as Africans have less money compared too does in the west, probably it's because we use the services more that's why they are capitalising on it too real us off.

The adoption of tools for the security of our pc is really becoming more and more necessary.

Unfortunately, the malicious attacks of many unidentified individuals is the greatest danger to our data :(

You took quite a gamble there.
You don't need a separate computer for this. @onealfa published a post about TAILS recently.

You should check it out.

I used to book holidays via VPN.
Booking during kids holidays is always more expensive. But the holidays in our neighbouring countries aren't at the same dates.

I saw that post and understand, but I would just be happier separating them especially as everything I am holding is increasing with value and will hopefully be worth a small fortune at some point.
