Today I Stopped Playing Splinterlands

This was supposed to be a clickbait title but it's true, I stopped playing.

The reason I thought I stopped playing today was that I reached Bronze 1 and would get 9 Loot Chests at the end of the Season!

That's huge for me because I'm not a good player and I know I will likely lose a ton of games and lose my Bronze 1 chests. That was a change in the game that I didn't like because it was so hard for me to win enough games to stay in Bronze 1. In fact, I made it to Silver for 2 matches a few weeks ago but then ended up in Bronze III.

So I figure If I stopped playing for 1 day I could end the season and be up by one chest because If I did my quest, I'd only win 1 chest.

Yes, I'm addicted to playing so today is super hard for me. But then I read the announcement from Splinterlands about the next round of upcoming changes.

Now these updates really put pressure on Bronze players. I get why they are making the changes and I sort of agree with them but it is going to kill the growth of the game.

New players will drop out at a much higher rate because there won't be much excitement in playing Novice & Bronze matches. The addiction comes from winning cards and also realizing that the disappointing DEC you win in your loot chests actually have real value.

Credits are ok but no card? That's a killer and while I thought Splinterlands was on it's way to being a Unicorn level game approaching critical mass now I think it cut itself off at the knees.

It's a great game but I'm honestly a Bronze player. I'm not skilled enough to go further. Even with tons of practice, I wouldn't do well.

The time commitment required to play the game at a high level is too much for me and I suspect, many new players looking to try it out.

I may invest in the tokens but no more cards because I won't play my way out of Bronze and there won't be any fun left in for me. That 1 loot chest and the thought that I could win a cool card was enough for me and it got me addicted to the game.

Without that I fear the game won't "stick" with new players. But I do think the changes are fine for higher leagues. Let's just hope that enough people will devote themselves to enough gameplay to make it sustainable.

well its going to get less fun for new players because the reward types are changing but it is a fun and addictive game. It's worth the $10 spellbook for sure. And after you get the spellbook you can earn rewards from your play. But you can play for free and learn without the spellbook but you won't get any rewards. I'm glad I spent the $10 and got started.

It's done to entice people to purchase it hire cards and increase value of the game. Lots of changes occured and it made earning so much harder.

It's going to backfire but they don't seem to care about growth of new players. It will head back towards a niche game for a certain demographic. I think when you could get card and/or DEC it opened up to people looking to try play to earn. That is an important segment of people they told to go find another game. In my view as a bad player and investor, I think it's a bummer. Still a fun game but not a unicorn. They had it right in their hands.

Oh that's too bad... but I guess they are trying to push people to buy more cards.

Let's see how it affects player retention

yeah, I don't think it will work in the way they think. They are trying to make a cool game but so many people want to join. They got famous and didn't want it I guess. They will become less popular but still have a cool game. Just less players. The new cards will get really cheap on the market so I will buy some just in case.

I think they want to stop bots and farmers.

I get that. This is the wrong way though. I don't know the right way, but this will backfire. Maybe figure out how to limit to one account. Most new players wont use bots.

I do think it's probably not as good for new players. With credits being part of the rewards, it means they want people to buy cards. Even if you flip the cards into DEC afterwards, you will lose about 5%.

Getting into Silver or Gold or Diamond isn't about skill primarily, it's about having a levelled deck, staying there is more about skill as eventually you'll start to come up against equally weighted players.

I've been criticisiing the team since the start for shafting the little guy, but it's worked to see the game grow.

Too many people farming off the rewards is what did this.

They do need to offer more to newer players though - a start would be to have some of the buffs kick in at lower levels on the new cards and then have very marginal gains up the levels.

I agree, I think they should have let it ride a little longer until they came up with a perk for bronze. Taking things away and telling people looking for play to earn games to look elsewhere was a bad move. Imagine if you just bought a spellbook in the last few weeks.

I understand, I had a ton of cards 2 years ago.. sold like many others.. but I think this could be a 50/50 it is meant to fight the bots and stealing* from real players.

But it will be harder.. But.. I have a feeling new players are going to keep coming in. Pokemon and Magic the gathering do not pay you in rewards.... theres that.

I hope so but I think it will slow down growth and cut it off. People will get board after a season or two.
