Bozzlife: Bringing in new business

Well, today is the day... What was once a field very similar to this is now filled with steel and mortar. I don't have any pictures to show you because I have been trying to avoid that area of town, but today the new Costco that they built down the road from our house is opening.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. We have already purchased our membership, but I am not sure how I feel about it being so close. If I had to guess I would say it is about two miles away from where we live.

One of the feelings I have is excitement. Even though we already have a Sam's Club in one of the cities near us, the Costco is definitely going to bring more business to our side of town. With that will be increased traffic and that is one of the things that I am not looking forward to.

They were smart in the fact that they built the Costco right off the expressway for easy on and off access. This area was never considered the "center of town", but it did used to be busier. Once upon a time there was a thriving hotel/resort, a drive in movie theater, a couple fine dining restaurants, a traditional cinema and a bowling alley.

Now, all that remains are the bowling alley, The hotel(with nowhere near the amenities it used to have), an Mongolian BBQ, and that is about it.

Just down the road they build the new civic arena and behind where the Costco is going they built the new city jail. Beyond that, the area has kind of stagnated.

Although we have a membership, it will probably be a while before we venture into the store. Covid numbers in our area are going up pretty quickly and the county we live in just topped an 11% infection rate the other day. I have a feeling the hype and excitement could turn this grand opening into a super spreader event.

Personally, I have only been in a Costco a handful of times. If you live near one or have a membership to one, what are some of your staple products that you always pick up there? What do they really excel at?

I have heard it is a really great company to work for and I look forward to seeing how much this area of town grows (or doesn't) now that we have a major draw there. As much as I don't want the added traffic, I think it would be cool if this brought in more dining options to our town. There are a couple of chains that I would love to see pop up (I'm looking at you Chick Fil A).

I know it is unlikely, but it would even be cool to see a Trader Joe's open up down the road. There isn't a ton of space right now, but there are some more fields close and if the price is right I am sure anyone could be compelled to sell.

TL:DR

Are you a Costco member? What are your favorite products? Have you had a Costco built near you? What other businesses did it bring in with it?

Developing an area has both good and bad elements. Personally I don't agree with membership into retail at all having witnessed it over here, you have to have a card to buy, then buy to a certain value, I would prefer shops to be more independent Mom & Pop stores to the chain stores taking over everywhere @bozz

Not living in your country I do not know the store, sorry no advice other than given above as an opinion.

Costco is great, even for a single person like me!
It is good to have all sorts of mix in business!!!
Plus, it is good for the local economy!

Yeah... one thing I like about it is that it caters also to small retail buyers like myself!

Costco was just becoming a thing when I was moving away from the States. This is the competition to Sam's Club perhaps? I love those places but as far as I can tell we don't really have them here. I miss them. Thailand has something similar called Makro.

Yeah, it is a bulk membership club. I remember the first one that ever came to our area was called Pace a long time ago. Now Sam's Club and Costco are the two big ones.

oh you have to be a member. I remember that at Sam's club and also that you had to buy like 12 jars of ketchup if you wanted any at all. I had a membership that was provided by the company i worked for at the time but since I lived alone I didn't really need that much ketchup.

Yes, bulk is definitely the norm with these places. I can get some really great deals on my allergy medicine and some other staples that we use every week.
