A Trifecta

avatar

I was commenting on a post that @dagger212 wrote the other day and it got me thinking about writing this post.

My mind was spinning about a million miles a minute and as I started writing my comment on that post I realized it could be a post within itself.

So this post is going to be about whales and let me say right from the get go it is not meant to disparage anyone. The last thing I need is to be on the bad side of a whale.

If you were trying to guess, the trifecta I am referring to in the title is posting, commenting, and curating.

Anyway, it popped into my head the other day that whales on Hive are kind of like UFO's or aliens. We know they likely exist, but if anyone tells you they saw one or interacted with one, they look at you like you are crazy.

Let's be honest, interaction is not something that whales in general are great at. I kind of can't blame them. I'd like to think that if I held that large of a stake I would be interacting and throwing out upvotes like they were candy.

I can understand the draw once your account is that large and you have put in all the hard work to just sit back and let your stake passively work for you.

I can think of one platform off the top of my head where I would probably be considered a whale and I know I don't interact over there nearly as much as I should. Maybe I am just lazy, maybe it is the price, maybe I should take my own advice, who knows.

Finding a whale who does the "big three" regularly and well is even more of a rarity. I can think of maybe one or two off the top of my head. The best example being @taskmaster4450le. I am starting to think that maybe he is already implementing some of that AI technology he writes about into his routine because he is a literal machine.

He posts at least twice a day with high quality posts, he is always at the top of the leaderboard in comments, and he spreads his voting out fairly decently.

Now that is a whale to gives back to the community.

I can think of several other really great whales, and some of them tick a one or two of the boxes, but none of them tick all three.

So what is my point?

Like I said, I am not calling anyone out. In a million years it would never be my place to do that. Quite honestly, I just thought that UFO analogy was really funny and I wanted to work it into a post somehow.

It does raise some interesting questions though...

Do you try for the trifecta each day? Is that something we should all shoot for or should we just do our own thing? Everyone including me has different circumstances and life doesn't always afford the luxury of completing the trifecta.

As our accounts grow larger, what responsibility do we have to the platform? None? A little? A lot? What if it wasn't a "social" platform? Do you think that should factor into it at all?

I look forward to reading your comments. Don't mind me though, I am going to just slide over to that other frontend and do a little curation now!

I totally agree with you on this .

I personally haven't ever seen a whale who is on the top of engagement every single week . I interact with him on daily basis now and @taskmaster4450le has really inspired me to a great extent that I want to hop on to Hive just to talk to him lol.

But that is not necessary , he is just contributing through content too and although I appreciate that very much I don't expect all the whales to do that.

But I do expect them to diversify their votes and vote good contents which LeoFinance whales are masters at.

Yeah, I think Leo is actually a bit different than some of the other platforms. There are still some whales that are one note in terms of their interaction on chain, but usually if you really want to talk to them you can catch them on the Discord.

I understand that but I guess by having the interaction on blockchain we are actually adding more value to it.

For me, I just like having fun and actually try to separate out the financial aspect from the social aspect. It's a subject that has caused many debates with rewards on posts when you try to combine the two in my opinion but I like commenting, showing support with an upvote (probably shouldn't do everything at 100% all the time as my VP never gets above 60% haha) and posting each day - it's just fun. I feel there's a certain pressure that comes with having a lot of stake in a platform but think it depends on how you want to use your stake - the argument always is "it's your stake, you can do what you want with it".

There's so many different tokens and places you can support now on Hive-Engine that you can engage with - loving it!

I'd like to feel that way, but the fact is I put so much time into this that if I am not able to at least have something to show for it, then I am not sure it was worth it. Sure, I have made connections with people all over the world, but since we are "blogging for money" there has to be some kind of end game as well.

It really depends on what your end game is with it all I guess, put some targets down and where you want to be, will help define if you think things were worth it or not by your own standards

It's not my standards I am worried about so much. My wife deserves the world, and my hope is to give it to her one day thanks to the early investments I have made in crypto.

I hear you! Hopefully by the end of the year, we will all reap the benefits of the mega bull run we're in :)

There are different whales across the various tokens. For example, I am a whale on LEO but not on Hive.

Also, the original people in hive were more tech oriented (along with investors). Thus they are not into creating a lot of content. The investors joined to get the reward and the techies because they understood the technology and were able to code projects they were interested in.

Now, we see a different set of users, ones who dont fall into those categories. But the distribution of Hive is going to take a while to change. However, within the different tribes, that is already taking place. The whales there are more involved since that is what drew them in. Whatever the topic, the opportunity exists to have some impact.

It is why the layer 2 is going to be so valuable. This is where the specialized interest will reside.

That is a good point about the beginning of Hive, but I am guessing all tribes/communities are going to have people who dumped money in early and really don't interact. I was merely pointing out you are one of the exceptions on Leo. While some whales tick one or two boxes, you tick off all three.

As our accounts grow larger, what responsibility do we have to the platform?

Well, nothing is binding or obligatory - if we do good for the platform, then the platform's value rises and so as our account. So anyone who wants to grow should think that and do whatever best they can do. Just posting and promoting in twitter using the right tags gets the platform more views. The on chain conversation is more about how you engage (socially) with others and what value you get out of it. But I think, we all have responsibility to spread the platform outside of the chain. I keep doing that in twitter most of the times - and the community is definitely growing there and we are getting noticed.

I personally like to write short-form stuff over long-form stuff so I generally comment. I really should be posting more and gradually get better at writing more high quality posts.

Personally I think everyone should be replying to comments but upvoting is their own decision. I probably won't get anything back but giving back a few second layer HE tokens to the people that took effort to respond is my way of saying I value their comments. Of course sometimes I skip out on voting all comments but I try to vote each unique person at least once.

I try to spread it around as much as I can, but I am not that big of an account. I hear you about not wanting to write long form stuff as much. I am really looking forward to the potential that Project Blank will have.

I'm worried about my voting habits, some think i vote for the same people to much. Its pretty sad but my new goal is to drop down the rich list and get out of the cutation spotlight.

You can vote for me anytime you want and I won't judge you :) I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think vote circles kind of happen organically and they aren't necessarily always malicious like people think. I have a good group of friends I have established on here over the years and we like and support each other's content. Some might call it a circle jerk, but I don't see it that way.

I have started diversifying my votes also. I use to vote for a limited number of accounts that I knew, but recently decided to start voting on my feed and new feed. I voted 20% until I got my voting power up from 60% to above 80%. Now I have decided to leave a 50% vote on 5 and 100% vote on five to make an impact.

I know that with Leo’s Linear curation I make just as much voting on small accounts as large, so it’s a reverse Ponzi Scheme to me. I vote half for the new ones, so I, an old won can make money. It’s weird, but it’s sustainable in a way a Ponzi is unsustainable.

Then I leave the fiery symbol to make an impression.
