How I established a partnership deal with one of the biggest hotels of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

I successfully established a partnership today with one of the top hotels in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The idea was a rather spontaneous one. Were it not for the idea of traveling to the UAE from Ukraine amidst the pandemic, the idea would never have manifested.

I admit it is not easy to land an appointment with the GM of the hotel. In general, it is not easy to land an appointment with the GM of any well-established international business. At least not over the span of just one phone call. That was the upper hand I had over anyone else attempting it.

Say if it was a reputable businessperson or someone who has a tiny bit of celebrity status attached to their name, it is incredibly simpler to set up a meeting. But for a doctor who lives abroad with no known history of businesses worth more than a few Ks seems like a long shot.

But yes, that is what it took.

The toughest part?

To simplify the toughest part, I want to give you an example that some of you may be very familiar with. Traveling through an airport. I say "some of you" because a lot of passport holders may be exempt from this hardship. What do you think is the toughest part when traveling through an airport? Which thing exactly gives you a puff of anxiety, a tiny bit of shock? Tiny asystole?

The immigration, of course. What is behind you and what is after you is often bordered by those tiny cabins. If you pass the immigration, all is good. If you don't, then nothing works out. It is the difference between the here and there, the then and now, the green and the greener side.

The toughest part for me in any of my business meetings was always the "immigration". For me the metaphor is for "setting up a meeting".

Always remember, if you have a date set that means your counterpart has at least a tiny amount of confidence staked in you. Your counterpart has an objective that can be achieved through you. You are expecting something, and so is your counterpart.

I like to remind myself that there is no defeat, whatsoever, when walking out of a business meeting. There is always a "next step". The only thing keeping you and your partnership is the first encounter. The first meeting. The first dialogue.

What if things don't workout?

image.png

Have you ever had "shower thoughts"? Of course, you have! Everybody does. Do you recreate scenarios and play it out while in the shower? What happens? I would be surprised if anyone comes out of a "shower thought" as the loser. You always, ALWAYS, come out as the victor.

This is the mindset I carry in every business meeting. There is no way a meeting ends without satisfaction. Even if either side isn't the tiniest bit interested at the end of the session, there is always something to take away from it. A lesson, a different approach, a way of speech, or something else. But everyone can come out of a meeting and take back something to reflect and work upon for the next, whether they land a deal or not.

I personally walk into a virtual shower during my meetings. It helps me find the different angles at things that could lead to a mutual understanding. It sounds very silly, but your creative brain that turns on when the shower does can really make the difference you need in a meeting.

You got lucky!

image.png

Of course, I did! But do you know which genie's lamp did I rub to get lucky? A year-long extremely disciplined work ethic, a die-hard approach at doing things correctly, honesty and drive. These things are among the few reasons why I got lucky. Were it not for any of these, I would never have made a friend who would have so much confidence in me.

Let me explain to you what this confidence looked like. A voice message from me that didn't last 15 seconds. A meet-up that didn't last 3 minutes. We discussed each other's health for the first 2 and half minutes, the remainder 30 seconds for me to pitch. That led to a phone call to the GM of the hotel which lasted roughly 25 seconds. 15 minutes later, I am sitting with the GM discussing business while sipping on an espresso.

There is a huge amount of luck involved. This is something no one will openly admit. I do. But there is something bigger than luck. Something that triggers the luck. Were it not for my actions, then I would have never gained the trust of my friend. Were it not for the GM's confidence in my friend, the meeting would never have happened.

Wish me luck.
