The cost of living

avatar

I've been living off my earnings from crypto for a long time and relatively speaking, it actually isn't much but thanks to the low standard of living in Nigeria, it is enough to cater for the barest minimum. When it comes to living, I consider myself a minimalist because I focus on things I consider necessities and I'm never far away from compromising in a situation that I could have gotten something more "luxurious".

image.png

In recent times, I've really streamlined my expenditure and literally everything goes into food, internet and soap. August was one of the longest months for me in recent times because I didn't get any support from my family for the first time in months, and so I had to depend solely on my earnings from my crypto activities and I must say, it felt really good.

Obviously, I'd like to have more money but at the same time, the fact that I can depend on myself to cater for the basics is a step in the right direction. Thanks to this development, I've been able to put in more money into buying more Hive, Leo, and Vite that will keep me in a better-placed position for the near future.

The coronavirus really kicked Nigeria's economy in the nuts but in recent times, we've been making some ground in the market against the dollar. At the peak of the shitstorm, $1 was trading at 489 Naira but at the time of writing this, it is like 436 Naira. That is a sparse consolation when you consider that it was about 360 just a few months ago but that's a sign of the times. The hike in the dollar to Naira conversion made it difficult to stack more crypto but with things settling down, I'd be able to get my hands on more tokens.

The point is that things are settling down a bit and I'm also making life changes to reduce the cost of living. With the price of tokens so low and the fact that I have some spare funds on me, I'll be investing more in my favourite projects. The goal is to make enough money to afford a vacation that will span my entire life but for now, I'd be happy to get a short one like my bitch @trumpman.

Minimalist living is a way of life and doing it simply let's your mind and soul focus on what's really important. Nice to see your journey and the fact you are fully dedicated to crypto, I wish I just could do that.

I like the concept of crypto. The idea of owning a part of a bigger mechanism thrills me.
Even when I eventually get a job, I'm going to convert most of my savings to crypto

What's your estimated time-expectation on a job? I assume that would make things much easier for you, augment your crypto earnings and also allow you to plan for a better future.

I'd speculatively say that the best case scenario is around January next year. It's never straight forward and I get mini anxiety attacks because of the uncertainty.

Also, getting a job that doesn't need qualifications won't even be enough to pay for internet, talk less of saving to buy more coins, so that's out of the question

I thought you were finishing a degree and would work within that sector? Why would you take a job that didn't need qualifications?

I wasn't considering it, just putting out the worst case scenario. I know a lot of people with master's degrees living off low paying jobs like that but that would never be me.

I'm at the end of my degree but even a master's degree doesn't actually give me any assurance of getting a job. I've made progress in my simulation and will start compiling results after my supervisor validates the work so far.

Ok sorry, my misunderstanding. Hopefully you get a job in your field and your life can kickstart! Wishing you the best this weekend.

You should actually take a look at Celsius Network! It could properly help you a lot if you can get the app. They have insane returns, 80% of their revenue is returned to the user! It doesn't require you to either invest or transfer coins. I am preparing a post about it, but it could be useful for you!

I moved 100$ worth of btc and eth to their app from my exchange. Alex Mashinsky is the CEO and he is having AMA every week on youtube to answer questions!

^ And yes that is my ref link :p

Lol I'll check them out asap and yes, I'll use your referral link for sure bro bro. I've seen them mentioned somewhere 🤔

I am getting quite bullish on them every since I saw the AMA yesterday!

I will either invest in Hive or Celsius in the future, DeFi got nothing on these guys :D

That must feel pretty good to be able to support yourself with earnings from posting and crypto! Almost as good as winning two trophies in a month like our beloved Arsenal!

Hope you get to have your extended holiday one day, I'm aiming for the same but UK is damn expensive!

Best part about winning the trophy is seeing salty chavski fans go "it's an irrelevant trophy", I drink their tears.

Yeah man, it feels good but I'd like to get an actual job as soon as possible to augment my crypto earnings and investment.

Lol, tears for fears hey. Love the impact Mikel is having, I'm sure he'll work his magic with some of the talent he's bringing in!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you about a job mate. Any particular industry you're looking to work in?

I'd like to be a university lecturer

Ah yeah, think I remember you saying now as that's something I'd like to be as well, you need to have a really strong passion for the research topic that you'd be teaching though and business sense to write proposals for funding on your research projects. When I did my PhD, it was pretty limited in my research area and couldn't get past our good friend, "nepotism", so hopefully you have some contacts that you can reach out to and get your foot in the door.

Nepotism is always around the corner here but hopefully, something good comes up along the way. I'll be completing my masters in a couple of weeks but I won't get the degree until next year since the university governing body is on strike. The challenges here have layers lol.

Ah yes, as if the layers of academia weren't challenging enough! Are there any research projects available to continue with in your department or with your supervisor after the Masters?

In my experience, it's best to try and get your foot in the door and keep it there if it's something you want to do and the emphasis on getting research papers out there in to journals is a must. That's where I went wrong but then, I had no support either so did what I could and handed in a 330 page thesis unchecked and made it through with just minor corrections. Makes you wonder what these folks actually do haha

330-page thesis lmao. I'm around 100 pages and already feel burned out already.

Haha! Yeah mate, got pretty burned out from writing that I can tell you! What made it worse was I had to rewrite it all 2 weeks before handing in. A long story that I did write about but will probably turn it in to a book myself 😆

Damn, 330 pages is basically a book already. You're going to write a book about a book. I'd like to try studying in another country though. Around here, we're always ill-equipped to handle just about everything, leading to low-quality output in terms of result and volume of research.

You could do a weight session with the thesis I did haha! Well, it's more of a survival guide and share the traumas that every student can probably relate to that I went through but things are very different now even 6 years on with covid!

Have you started reaching out to other countries? You may want to try Open University if you're thinking of the UK, I think Monash in Australia (Melbourne) is a good one for engineering.

Not yet, funding will be a factor, so I'll take some years working as an assistant lecturer to gather funds and write a few journals along the way.

Good plan mate, hope it all works out for you.

Commercial world has its pros and cons as does academia but having spent 6+ years in both, I'm leaning towards academia but trying to find a topic that really interests me. Space Science and Cosmology is right up there though (along with blockchain technology but think the Universe plays to my childhood memories of adventure, we'll see) - getting back in will be the biggest challenge I think so my advice is, stay in academia mate.

Thanks man. You've been around for a while, and so I'll be hitting you up from time to time for advice and stuff.

Funny thing is that I'm actually not even a good student, I mean, I pass exams and stuff, but a lot of time, it feels like the lecturers make simple things seem abstract, making it demoralising to learn. The system only caters for the needs of those nerdy virgins that spend their whole time studying, while ordinary learners like me get left out.
I want to be a lecturer that can reach out to ordinary people and smarty-pants alike. Research is a big part of the job but, I'm more interested in helping people with the knowledge I've gotten from school and life.

Haha, you basically just described me there in your second paragraph as well 😃

I have to say, having some real world experience is really valuable which is something a lot of the academics and professors lack. They are geniuses, don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for that deep, pinpoint knowledge they have, but when it comes to practicalities and doing experiments... yeah... can be found wanting sometimes!

I love sharing knowledge, experience and inspiring people (or at least trying to!)! There's something empowering about sharing knowledge and you see people use it to their betterment. Gives you a warm feeling inside hey?

Exactly. I mean, I have plenty respect for the geniuses and such, but to me, the value I give back is knowing I played my part in shaping someone into a better all-round person.

In my first teaching experience, I was a teacher in secondary school teaching Senior Secondary class 1-3 maths and physics, I experienced this joy first hand. It gets stressful at times and management might ride your ass over some bullshit but at the end of the day, hearing kids thank me for clarifying an issue they had in school and sometimes outside school made it all worth the time. I'd like to somehow translate that to helping adults at the university level, while also improving myself in the process.

There will always be stresses at times but I think that is countered by the intrinsic motivation from helping others out. Like you say, the joy is on both sides!

Fully respect teachers at school, couldn't do that myself. Tried a stint as a junior tennis coach but prefer the adults although sometimes their behaviour leaves something to be desired...! All part of the fun haha!

lol yeah. So last year I did a PGD in education in one of those open universities(while running my Masters) and I swear, I got to see OLD people, and I mean 55-70 range acting like kids.

I really laughed and almost chocked when you said THANKS TO THE LOW STANDARD OF LIVING IN NIGERIA. well, what can I say. There are truths in what you have documented down in this post. However, it is nice to see you planning ahead for the future days even via crypto.
Wish you better luck with days and years ahead

Surviving on crypto is tough, but we are nearly doing it here in Suriname, although I wouldn't consider Suriname as affordable as Cambodia or Nigeria, but we make it work, although we live below the standard of living of 95% of the Surinamese.

It's good to have a dream though, we just hope borders open up again one day so we can get to cheap to live country that's open to Cambodian passport holders.

Hang in there my man.
