The Gambit's Queen || Gambito de Dama

I have always believed that any subject is super interesting when you get into it. With knowledge any field is infinite and exciting.

Although in my childhood I read a lot of chess books and played a lot of chess, I never developed "the logic" of the game (actually I developed mathematical logic quite late) and maybe that's why it never caught me as a sport. I have always recognized its value and admired the great players, but without that touch of passion that makes the difference.

It is precisely this respect I feel for the game of science and for chess players that awakened my interest in the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit" (apart from the eternal pressure that my youngest son puts on me to watch television with him 😂).

From the first chapter you realize that you are in front of a great work, because the production is impeccable from the first moment, taken care in details with a lot of caution, to present us some surprising settings. Besides, the whole production is loaded with symbolism related to chess, starting with the number of chapters, which are seven, as well as the squares a pawn has to advance to become queen.

To imagine the mixture of chess and drugs is not easy. Netflix bet on using these elements in its definition, but in my opinion it falls short. The Queen's Gambit deals with many issues and there are many complaints made in it. In fact, its proposal is so rich that now I feel the need to read the original story in Walter Tevis' novel, since it is a very intelligent plot with a lot of content, "a lot of substance".

The actors' work is first-rate, starting with Beth the girl, played by Isla Johnston, who is in charge of introducing us to this tormented character. Anya Taylor-Joy, who has already managed to grab all the headlines for her outstanding work on this character, is without a doubt an incredible success in the production, since she is a complex and particular character that she manages to internalize in an exceptional way. However, each one of the performances is very well achieved, demonstrating a successful casting.

One of the aspects that highlight the production are the spaces created, the settings, which manage to show the 60s in a surprising way.

It is an extraordinary portrait of what the world of chess can be like, its passion, dedication, hard work, attractiveness and interest on that 64-cell board and its pieces.

Although it can be summarized that the Queen's Gambit is about an orphan, tormented by her past and with very hard experiences, who manages to find in chess, something that is completely under her control; this series offers much more and must be seen by all the lovers of good cinema, of good plots, of good series.

The success of the production has not been long in coming, but if you are one of those who have not seen it yet, don't wait any longer.

Siempre he creído que cualquier tema es superinteresante cuando penetras en él. Con conocimiento cualquier materia es infinita y apasionante.

Aunque en mi infancia me leí cantidad de libros de ajedrez y lo jugué bastante, nunca llegué desarrollar “la lógica” del juego (en realidad la lógica matemática la llegué a desarrollar bastante tarde) y quizá por eso nunca me atrapó como deporte. Siempre le reconocí su valor y he admirado a los grandes jugadores, pero sin ese toque de pasión que hace la diferencia.

Precisamente ese respeto que siento por el juego-ciencia y por los ajedrecistas, fue el que despertó mi interés en la serie de Netflix “Gambito de Dama” (Aparte de la eterna presión que me hace mi hijo menor para que vea televisión con él 😂).

Desde el primer capítulo te das cuenta que estás ante un gran trabajo, pues la producción resulta impecable desde el primer momento, cuidada en detalles con mucha precaución, para presentarnos unas ambientaciones sorprendentes. Además toda la producción está cargada de simbolismos relacionados muchos de ellos con el ajedrez, empezando por el número de capítulos, que son siete al igual que las casillas que debe avanzar un peón para convertirse en reina.

Imaginarse la mezcla de ajedrez y drogas, no resulta sencillo. Netflix apostó a usar esos elemento en su definición, pero a mi juicio se queda corta. Gambito de Dama trata muchos temas y son abundantes las denuncias que en ella se hacen. De hecho es tan rica su propuesta que ahora siento la necesidad de leer la historia original en la novela de Walter Tevis, pues se trata de una trama muy inteligente y con mucho contenido, “mucha sustancia”.

El trabajo actoral es de primera, empezando con la Beth niña, interpretada por Isla Johnston, que es quien está a cargo de introducirnos este atormentado personaje. Anya Taylor-Joy, quien ya ha sabido acaparase todos los titulares por su destacada labor en este personaje, es sin duda una increíble acierto en la producción, pues es un personaje complejo y particular que ella logra internalizar de manera excepcional. Sin embargo, cada una de las actuaciones está muy bien logradas, demostrado un acertado casting.

Se trata de un retrato extraordinario de lo que puede ser el mundo del ajedrez, su pasión, la dedicación, lo duro, lo atractivo y lo interesante que puede resultar ese tablero de 64 casillas y sus piezas.

Uno de los aspectos que resaltan la producción son los espacios creados, las ambientaciones, que logran mostrar los años 60 de una manera sorprendente.

Si bien se puede resumir que Gambito de Dama trata de una huérfana, atormentada por su pasado y con una vivencias muy duras, que logra encontrar en el ajedrez, algo que está completamente bajo su control; esta serie ofrece mucho más y debe ser vista por todos los amantes del buen cine, de las buenas tramas, de las buenas series.

El éxito de la producción no se ha hecho esperar, pero si eres uno de los que aún no la han visto, no esperes más.
