[ENG-ESP] SERIES REVIEW: 'LOCKE & KEY' (2020) SEASON 1; A YOUTH DRAMA WITH FANTASY AND TERROR

Fantasy and horror go hand in hand as a pair of lovers. Within the series I am about to tell you about, there are different touches that make it a set of extraordinary filmographies based on a story both cartoonish and raw. Within this complexity we glimpse scenes of psychological terror, violence, deception, characters quite creative and dazzling, and plenty of action at the time.

La fantasía junto al horror van de la mano como un par de amantes. Dentro de la serie que les vengo a comentar hay diferentes toques que la hacen un conjunto de filmografías extraordinarias que se basan en una historia tanto caricaturesca como cruda. Dentro de esta complejidad vamos vislumbrando escenas de terror psicológico, violencia, engaños, personajes bastante creativos como deslumbrantes, y bastante acción en su momento.
'Locke & Key' is a series on the streaming service Netflix, based on the eponymous fantasy comic book of the same name by Joe Hill (the well-known son of Stephen King) and Gabriel Rodriguez. The series premiered on February 7, 2020 along with the acting cast consisting of Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Laysla De Oliveira, Petrice Jones and Griffin Gluck. Netflix announced in March 2020 that the series will be renewed with a second season and a third season at a later date.
Within the framework of the story we find a very simple plot, a family after the death of Rendell Locke (Bill Heck), the father of the family, moves from his hometown Seattle for the fictional town of Matheson, Massachussets, to the "Key House", which was a legacy of Rendell's family and with the help of Rendell's younger brother,Duncan Locke (Aaron Ashmore), Nina Locke, wife of the late Rendell and their children Tyler Locke (Connor Jessup), Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones) and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott), they gradually manage to adjust to their new home, but things start to get strange when Bode hears a woman's voice (Laysla De Oliveira) in the small well cottage, which she says is her echo. The strange voice tells the little boy that his house is full of magic keys that allow him to do extraordinary things, from that instant, the Locke brothers are in charge of finding all the keys and stop the evil demonic entity that wants to appropriate them for their evil plans.
‘Locke & Key’ es una serie del servicio de streaming Netflix, basada en el comic homónimo de fantasía con el mismo nombre de Joe Hill (el conocido hijo de Stephen King) y Gabriel Rodríguez. La serie se estrenó el 7 de febrero del 2020 junto con el reparto actoral compuesto por Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Laysla De Oliveira, Petrice Jones y Griffin Gluck. Netflix anunció en marzo del 2020 que la serie será renovada con una segunda temporada y con una tercera posteriormente.
Dentro del marco de la historia encontramos un argumento muy simple, una familia después de la muerte de Rendell Locke (Bill Heck), el padre de familia, se muda de su ciudad natal Seattle para el pueblo ficticio de Matheson, Massachussets, a la “Casa llave”, que fue legado de la familia de Rendell y con la ayuda del hermano menor de este,Duncan Locke (Aaron Ashmore), Nina Locke, esposa del difunto Rendell y sus hijos Tyler Locke (Connor Jessup), Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones) y Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott), logran adaptarse gradualmente a su nuevo hogar, pero las cosas comienzan a ponerse extrañas cuando Bode escucha la voz de una mujer (Laysla De Oliveira) en la pequeña casita del pozo, la cual dice que es su eco. La extraña voz le dice al pequeño que su casa está llena de llaves mágicas que le permiten hacer cosas extraordinarias, a partir de ese instante, los hermanos Locke se encargan de buscar todas las llaves y detener a la malvada entidad demoníaca que quiere apropiarse de ellas para sus planes malévolos.
I was interested in this series because of the inspiration on which it is based, and after doing some research, making a comparison in the aspects that create similarity between the comic and the movie, I deduced that they maintain a balance but at the same time are separated by the plot. Directed by Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill and Aron Eli Coleite, with a season (for the moment) of 10 episodes with a duration of between 40-56 minutes each, the series is a dramatic story of fantasy and horror, where we have the typical family with a common trauma that has to do with the death of their patriarch.
My first impression of Locke & Key as a young series, is that it is fun and exciting, told in several parts without leaving aside the situations of the main characters. Bode, the youngest of the family, is a happy and intelligent boy who eagerly searches for the keys. Kinsey, is the typical misfit and touchy teenager, who changes after a plot twist after making irresponsible use of one of the keys. Tyler, the eldest, acts as the new patriarch of the family now that his father is absent, trying to protect himself, his mother and his siblings.
Me interesó esta serie por la inspiración en la que está basada, y después de hacer una investigación, haciendo una comparación en los aspectos que crean similitud entre el comic y la película, deduje que mantienen un equilibrio pero a la vez son separados por la trama. Dirigida por Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill y Aron Eli Coleite, con una temporada (por el momento) de 10 episodios con una duración de entre 40-56 minutos cada uno, la serie es una historia dramática de fantasía y terror, donde tenemos a la típica familia con un trauma en común que tiene que ver con la muerte de su patriarca.
Mi primera impresión de Locke & Key como una serie juvenil, es que no deja de ser divertida y emocionante, contada en varias partes sin dejar aún lado las situaciones de los personajes principales. Bode, es el menor de la familia, un niño feliz e inteligente que busca con entusiasmo las llaves. Kinsey, es la típica adolescente inadaptada y susceptible, que cambia después de un giro en la trama luego de hacer uso irresponsable de una de las llaves. Tyler, es el mayor y actúa como el nuevo patriarca de la familia ahora que su padre está ausente, trata de protegerse él, a su madre y a sus hermanos.
These three characters within the story seemed to me the most interesting because of their particularities and not necessarily because they are the main characters. Nina, the mother, tries to create a harmonious environment for her children, after the death of their father and the move to the Key House, however, she is absent from most of the fantastic events that occur, because within the series (and I don't know if also in the comic), adults quickly forget the magic.
The series gives you that childlike yet grim feeling as if you were reading a Marvel comic book. Magic in this setting seems to only be present in adolescence and childhood, displacing adults by coming from a world where it has no cavity. The power of the keys, each one in particular, hooks you into the story, yet maintains its mystery as to their origin and elaboration so detailed.
Estos tres personajes dentro de la historia me parecieron los más interesantes por sus particularidades y no necesariamente por ser los protagonistas. Nina, la madre, intenta crear un ambiente armónico para sus hijos, después de la muerte de su padre y la mudanza a la Casa llave, sin embargo, está ausente de la mayoría de los sucesos fantásticos que ocurren, porque dentro de la serie (y no sé si también en el comic), los adultos olvidan rápidamente la magia.
La serie te da esa sensación infantil y a la vez lúgubre como si estuvieras leyendo un comic de Marvel. La magia en este entorno parece que solo está presente en la adolescencia e infancia, desplazando a los adultos por venir de un mundo donde no tiene cavidad. El poder de las llaves, cada uno en particular, te engancha a la historia, aunque mantiene su misterio en cuanto a su origen y elaboración tan detallada.
I enjoyed the story quite a lot, even more when I got to know the antagonist who little by little revealed his past and identity. The main characteristics of the villain remind you of a perverse and lying Loki, he is a being thirsty for power, manipulative and persuasive, capable of liquidating anyone in his path to get what he wants; the keys. However, the purposes of this character go beyond a simple accumulation of power.
The good use of flashbacks to teach us about the story and what it is about, makes us realize that everything has to do with the past, when Rendell and his friends made use of the magical powers of the keys when they were teenagers, but the demonic entity they released began to destroy their circle as "Keepers of the keys", handing them out after the death of three of their friends. This legacy was passed on to Rendell's children, who are searching for and discovering the keys' increasingly impressive powers, such as the "Mental Key", which gives you the power to enter the minds of others, or the "Key to Wherever", which turns an ordinary door into a portal to anywhere in the world you want to go.
La historia la disfruté bastante, más aún, al conocer al antagonista que poco a poco fue revelando su pasado e identidad. Las característica principales del villano te hacen recordar a un Loki perverso y mentiroso, es un ser sediento de poder, manipulador y persuasivo, capaz de liquidar a cualquiera que esté a su paso para conseguir lo que quiere; las llaves. Sin embargo, los propósitos de este personaje van más allá de una simple acumulación de poder.
El buen uso de los flashbacks para enseñarnos sobre la historia y de que va, nos hace darnos cuenta que todo tiene que ver con el pasado, cuando Rendell y sus amigos hacían uso de los poderes mágicos de las llaves cuando eran adolescentes, pero la entidad demoníaca que liberaron comenzó a destruir su círculo como “Guardianes de las llaves”, repartiéndoselas después de la muerte de tres de sus amigos. Este legado pasó a los hijos de Rendell, quienes van buscando y descubriendo los poderes de las llaves, que cada vez son más impresionantes, como la “Llave Mental”, que te brinda el poder de entrar en la mente de los demás, o la “Llave a donde sea”, que convierte una puerta ordinaria en un portal hacia cualquier parte del mundo que quieras ir.
However, something that I didn't like was that they left the best for the end, since the series becomes quite slow, concentrating on the dramatic moments of the protagonists, leaving little space for the fantastic. Certainly, the first season was only a path paved for the second, which I am sure will come the good, after having revealed little by little the mystery of the keys but still leaving some unrevealed, and in that attempt sometimes fails because sometimes it becomes predictable.
This young adult series with long touches of fantasy and horror is quite entertaining as would be The Harry Potter saga, I'm sure anyone can enjoy it and get hooked quickly with this type of genre. I give it a rating of 8.5/10 and look forward to the second season.
Sin embargo, algo que no me gustó fue que dejaran lo mejor para el final, ya que la serie se te hace bastante lenta concentrándose en los momentos dramáticos de los protagonistas, quedando pequeños espacios para lo fantástico. Ciertamente, la primera temporada fue solo un camino abonado para la segunda, que estoy seguro vendrá lo bueno, después de haber revelado poco a poco el misterio de las llaves pero aun dejando algunos sin revelar, y en ese intento a veces falla porque en ocasiones se vuelve predecible.
Esta serie juvenil con largos toques de fantasía y terror es bastante entretenida como lo sería La saga de Harry Potter, estoy seguro que cualquiera puede disfrutarla y engancharse rápidamente con este tipo de géneros. Le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 y espero ansiosamente la segunda temporada.
