[ENG-ESP] 'HOLIDAYS' (2016): A TERRIFYING ANTHOLOGY OF FESTIVITIES

Every month that passes, horror anthologies become more and more famous, we have a series of films that dazzle us with shocking stories that go beyond the horrible to the grotesque, which is the point where they all combine to create a disgusting broth of terrible things that entertain us and we can barely stand.
'Holidays' is this type of film that, with its series of bizarre tales of terror, manages to entertain us, disgust us and even make us think, and although this point is not necessarily positive (it should be noted), at least it doesn't leave us with that feeling of stripping away reality, including a few laughs.
Holidays is an anthology of 8 stories of approximately 12 minutes each, directed by 9 different directors distributed in each story, which use as reference the most important holidays in the world. Within the group of filmmakers we have some recognized ones, such as Kevin Smith, who has been the pioneer of the project and is the one who has been in charge of bringing them all together. According to my research, these directors were inspired by their aberration to the holidays, making them as terrifying as possible.
Although, not all of the stories are as shocking, and there are some (but only some), that leave an eerie feeling with a bit of a chuckle. I will give my opinion on each of the stories in this movie according to my perspective, as there will be others who have already seen it and disagree with me.
ＥＳＰＡ Ñ ＯＬ
Cada mes que pasa, las antologías de terror se vuelven cada vez más famosas, tenemos una serie de películas que nos deslumbran con historias impactantes traspasando lo horrible hasta llegar a lo grotesco, que es el punto donde todas se compaginan creando un caldo asqueroso de cosas terribles que nos entretienen y apenas podemos soportar.
‘Holidays’ es este tipo de películas que, con sus serie de cuentos extraños de terror, logran entretenernos, asquearnos y hasta hacernos pensar, y aunque este punto no es necesariamente positivo (cabe destacar), al menos no deja con esa sensación de despojo de la realidad, incluyendo unas cuantas carcajadas.
Holidays, es una antología de 8 relatos de 12 minutos cada uno aproximadamente, dirigida por 9 directores diferentes distribuidos en cada historia, las cuales usan de referencia los días festivos más importantes del mundo. Dentro del grupo de cineastas tenemos a algunos reconocidos, como Kevin Smith, quien ha sido el pionero del proyecto y es quien se ha encargado de reunirlos a todos. Según mi investigación, estos directores se inspiraron por su aberración a los días festivos, haciéndolos lo más terroríficos posibles.
Aunque, no todos los cuentos son tan impactantes, y hay algunos (pero solo algunos), que dejan una sensación extraña con algo de risa. Daré mi opinión sobre cada uno de los cuentos de esta película según mi perspectiva, ya que habrá otras personas que ya la han visto y no están de acuerdo conmigo.
Valentine's Day
First up is "Valentine's Day", directed by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch (Mom 2), the story of a girl with a secret love for her high school gymnastics coach who, in an atmosphere of madness and psychological turmoil, things ultimately turn bloody. The story and its ending possess a strange dose of possibility and insanity, where the directors make us see that love can do anything.
El Día de San Valentín
En primer lugar tenemos “El día de San Valentín”, dirigida por Dennis Widmyer y Kevin Kolsch (Mamá 2), la historia de una chica con un amor secreto por su entrenador de gimnasia del colegio que, en un ambiente de locura y trastornos psicológicos, las cosas al final se vuelven sanguinarias. El relato y su final poseen una dosis extraña de posibilidad y demencia, donde los directores nos hacen ver que el amor lo puede todo.

St. Patrick's Day
The second story: "St. Patrick's Day", directed by Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), is about a primary school teacher victim of a strange pagan cult, who gets involved in the most diaphanous madness when she sees a symbol in the shape of a snake. I liked the reference used by the director in this story, which talks about witchcraft and the expulsion of snakes by the saint, but within this short, it takes another turn to the inverse, leaving us with large doses of madness until the end.
El Día de San Patricio
El segundo relato: “El día de San Patricio”, contamos con la dirección de Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), trata sobre una maestra de primaria víctima de un extraño culto pagano, quedando envuelta en la más diáfana locura al ver un símbolo con forma de serpiente. Me gustó la referencia que usó el director en este relato, el cual habla de la brujería y la expulsión de las serpientes por parte del santo, pero que dentro de este corto, toma otro giro a la inversiva, dejándonos con grandes dosis de locura hasta el final.

Easter
The third story: "Easter", directed by Nicholas McCarthy, talks about a little girl who wakes up in the middle of the night when she hears some strange noises, but, realizing that she was detected by her strange visitor, she will have to assume a role that will change her life forever. This story is one of my favorites, especially because of the fantastic character that appears in it, considering that McCarthy did not hesitate to combine two of the most important characters of Easter to create a being worthy of nightmares.
Pascua
El tercer relato: “Pascua”, dirigido por Nicholas McCarthy, habla sobre una niña que se levanta a media noche al escuchar unos ruidos extraños, pero, al darse cuenta de que fue detectada por su extraño visitante, deberá asumir un rol que le cambiará su vida para siempre. Esta historia es una de mis preferidas, especialmente por el personaje fantástico que aparece en ella, teniendo en cuenta que, McCarthy, no dudó en combinar a dos de los personajes más importantes de la Pascua para crear un ser digno de pesadillas.

Mother's Day
The fourth story: "Mother's Day", by Sarah Adina Smith, which is about a girl who gets pregnant every time she has sex, so she seeks help and ends up in a kind of cult to appease her "curse", soon she realizes that her fertility will be affected by something more than sinister. This is possibly the worst story of all, with an interesting story that they didn't know how to make the most of, until the end that doesn't end up explaining absolutely nothing.
Día de la Madre
El cuarto relato: “Día de la Madre”, realizado por Sarah Adina Smith, el cual trata sobre una chica que cada vez que tiene relaciones sexuales queda embarazada, por lo que busca ayuda y termina en una especie de culto para apaciguar su “maldición”, pronto se da cuenta que su fertilidad será afectada por algo más que siniestro. Posiblemente este sea el peor relato de todos, con una historia interesante a la que no supieron sacarle provecho, llegando hasta su final que no termina por explicar absolutamente nada.

Father's Day
The fifth story: "Father's Day", directed by Anthony Scott Burns, tells the story of a girl who finds a tape where she receives instructions from her father to find him, who disappeared years ago, suddenly, at the end of her search, she finds something frighteningly unexpected. This story, like Mother's Day, is not about the holiday at all, and its story, while interesting, maintains its mysterious setting by being self-serving in wanting to reveal even a glimpse of what is really going on.
Día del Padre
El quinto relato: “Día del Padre”, dirigido por Anthony Scott Burns, cuenta la historia de una chica que encuentra una cinta donde recibe instrucciones de su padre para hallarlo, el cual desapareció hace años, de repente, al final de su búsqueda, encuentra algo despavoridamente inesperado. Este relato, al igual que el del Día de la Madre, no trata nada sobre la festividad, y su historia, aunque interesante, mantiene su entorno de misterio siendo egoísta de querer revelarnos aunque sea un atisbo de lo que de verdad está pasando.

Halloween
The sixth story: "Halloween", by Kevin Smith himself, talks about three girls who are sexually exploited by their pimp who forces them to sell their bodies online, but things are reversed when the individual falls victim to his own game. Possibly this was one of the most expected because of Smith's participation, but it ends up being a terrible disappointment, and just like the two previous stories mentioned, it does not take as a reference the holiday that corresponds to it, although we can see the director's characteristic humor present throughout the short, the story seems more like a crude revenge.
Halloween
El sexto relato: “Halloween”, realizado por el propio Kevin Smith, habla sobre tres chicas que son explotadas sexualmente por su proxeneta el cual las obliga a vender sus cuerpos por internet, pero las cosas se invierten cuando el individuo cae víctima de su propio juego. Posiblemente este era uno de los más esperados por la participación de Smith, pero termina siendo una terrible decepción, y al igual que los dos relatos anteriores mencionados, no toma como referencia el día festivo que le corresponde, aunque podemos ver el humor característico del director presente en todo el corto, la historia parece más bien una venganza burda.

Christmas
The seventh story: "Christmas", directed by Scott Stewart, tells the story of a man who forgets at the last minute his son's Christmas present, so he ends up buying some virtual reality glasses, but soon, an obsession begins to emerge causing a disturbing and ironic outcome. The analogy was interesting and I liked the way the director approached it, having as a motto "Wishes can also destroy you", something that with simple words the director created an entertaining and quite good story.
Navidad
El séptimo relato: “Navidad”, dirigido por Scott Stewart, te expone la historia de un hombre que olvida a último minuto el regalo de su hijo para navidad, por lo que termina comprando unos anteojos de realidad virtual, pero pronto, una obsesión comienza a emerger causando un desenlace tanto perturbador como irónico. La analogía estuvo interesante y me gustó la manera en como el director la abordó, teniendo como lema “Los deseos también pueden destruirte”, algo que con simples palabras el director creó una historia entretenida y bastante buena.

New Year
The eighth story: "New Year", by Adam Egypt Mortime, is about a serial killer who looks for female victims on dating websites, in the end, he meets a woman in the new year who will turn his world upside down. The theme is simple, uncomplicated and with plenty of gore; something that couldn't be missing in an anthology of horror stories. I liked it mostly for its simplicity that was not lost at all until the end, adding strong touches of madness and violence.
Año Nuevo
El octavo relato: “Año Nuevo”, realizado por Adam Egypt Mortime, trata sobre un asesino serial que busca víctimas femeninas en páginas web de citas, al final, conoce en año nuevo a una mujer que pondrá su mundo de cabeza. El tema es simple, nada complicado y con mucho gore; algo que no podía faltar en una antología de relatos de terror. Me gustó más que todo por su sencillez que no se perdió en lo absoluto hasta el final, agregándole fuertes toques de locura y violencia.

Although not all the stories had the same impact on me, the film is entertaining if you want to share a quiet afternoon or evening with your partner or friends, where you can enjoy some snacks and drinks. You could notice that each short had more or less the same budget, with a good direction with the actors and angles, and also the good use of filming in general where the filmmakers let us get into each story with great contemplation.I could give it a 6/10 rating, although the truth is the stories are quite inspiring, they could have been better as far as the plot is concerned.
Aunque no todos los relatos consiguieron transmitirme el mismo impacto, la película es entretenida si quieres compartir con tu pareja o amigos una tarde o noche tranquila, donde puedes disfrutar unas botanas con bebidas. Se podía notar que cada corto poseía más o menos el mismo presupuesto, con una buena dirección con los actores y los ángulos, y también el buen uso de la filmación en general donde los realizadores nos dejan entrañar con gran contemplo en cada historia. Podría darle un 6/10 de calificación, aunque la verdad las historias son bastante inspiradoras, pudieron ser mejores en cuanto a la trama me refiero.

Las antologías de terror siempre hay algunas historias que no son tan buenas, me llamaron la atención tres de esta reseña. La veré cuando tenga oportunidad.
Es entretenida la película y las historias son muy creativas, lástima que no todas alcanzaron el mismo nivel de calidad porque el proyecto es muy interesante.
