[ENG-ESP] FILM REVIEW: 'THINGS HEARD & SEEN' (2021); MORE DRAMA THAN TERROR

Just last night, looking for some excitement on Netflix, I decided to look for a horror movie that would make my hair stand on end, but without realizing it, the app itself started downloading a movie on my cell phone without having asked it to, I had forgotten that I left auto-downloads activated in the app, and good thing I noticed because after downloading 'Things Heard & Seen', it wanted to download another movie but I didn't allow it to. I don't know if the app read my mind or the movie was trending, however, it was a movie that according to the description belonged to the horror category, like what I was looking for.

Justo anoche, buscando algo de emoción por Netflix, decidí buscar una película de terror que me pusiera los pelos de punta, pero sin percatarme, la propia aplicación comenzó a descargar una película en mi celular sin habérselo pedido, había olvidado que dejé activada las autodescargas en la aplicación, y que bueno que me percaté porque después de haber descargado ’Things Heard & Seen’, quiso descargar otra película pero no se lo permití. No sé si la aplicación me leyó la mente o la película estaba en tendencia, sin embargo, era una película que según la descripción pertenecía a la categoría de terror, como lo que buscaba.
I decided to lie back and check it out, at first it looked interesting although then not so much really. Based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Brundage, All Things Cease to Appear, the film was directed by the filmmaking couple Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, known for the film American Splendor (2003), whose work earned them an Oscar nomination that same year. It starred Amanda Seyfried and James Norton, along with a cast consisting of F. Murray Abraham, Natalia Dyer, Rhea Seehorn, among others. The film was released on Netflix's digital platform on April 29, 2021 receiving strong reviews for it.
The story is denser than what one as a normal person could digest, taking into account that it is based on a 400-page novel to create a 2-hour film. The year is 1980, things begin to change when Catherine Clare (Amanda Seyfried), an art restorer with bulimic problems moves with her husband George Clare (James Norton) to a creepy house in a town called Chosen, New York, with their little 4 year old daughter Franny, due to George being given a job as an art history professor at a small college. While the Clares perform a restoration to the house, Catherine finds a strange Bible from the 18th century with the names of a series of people who claim to be married to women to which they only place the word "Condemned", after this, paranormal things begin to happen inside the house in which Catherine begins to inquire.
Decidí recostarme y ver que tal, al principio se veía interesante aunque después no tanto en realidad. Basada en la novela homónima de Elizabeth Brundage, * All Things Cease to Appear*, la película fue dirigida por la pareja de cineastas Shari Springer Berman y Robert Pulcini, conocidos por la película American Splendor (2003), cuya obra les otorgó una nominación al Oscar ese mismo año. Estuvo protagonizada por Amanda Seyfried y James Norton, junto al reparto compuesto por F. Murray Abraham, Natalia Dyer, Rhea Seehorn, entre otros. El filme fue lanzando en la plataforma digital de Netflix el 29 de Abril de 2021 recibiendo fuertes críticas al respecto.
La historia es más densa de lo que uno como persona normal podría digerir, tomando en cuenta que está basada en una novela de 400 páginas para crear un filme de 2 horas. Es el año 1980, las cosas comienzan a cambiar cuando Catherine Clare (Amanda Seyfried), una restauradora de arte con problemas bulímicos se muda con su esposo George Clare (James Norton) a una casa espeluznante en un pueblo llamado Chosen, Nueva York, con su pequeña hija de 4 años Franny, debido a que a George le dieron un trabajo como profesor de historia del arte en una pequeña universidad. Mientras los Clare realizan un restauración a la casa, Catherine encuentra una extraña Biblia del siglo XVIII con los nombres de una serie de personas que dicen estar casadas con mujeres a las cuales solo colocan la palabra “Condenada”, después de esto, empiezan a ocurrir cosas paranormales dentro de la casa en las que Catherine comienza a indagar.

Up to this point we see nothing new, it is the typical story of a haunted house in the middle of the countryside, where its protagonist will investigate what happened and the supernatural forces that haunts it, however the story continues to untie the ends little by little. One day, the brothers Eddie (Alex Neustaedter) and Cole Vayle (Jack Gore) show up at the Claire's house and offer to help restore the house, but gradually Catherine begins to see that both boys are linked to the dark mystery of their new home.
Things between Catherine and George start to become unbearable, the film is more of a dramatic story than a horror or suspense feature, as we see situations where the couple is affected by the forces that live with them. Catherine is a woman with disorders, not only physical because of her eating disorder, but she also begins to present an apathetic attitude towards others. George seems like a typical good family man, but as we observe him, we realize that he is a liar, narcissistic, self-centered, who has no empathy for his wife's needs and who manages to be unfaithful with a young woman named Willis (Natalia Dyer) whom he meets in a bookstore.
Hasta este punto no vemos nada nuevo, es la típica historia de una casa embrujada en medio del campo, en donde su protagonista investigará sobre lo sucedido y las fuerzas sobrenaturales que la acecha, sin embargo la historia sigue desatando los cabos poco a poco. Un día, se presenta ante la ahora casa de los Claire los hermanos Eddie (Alex Neustaedter) y Cole Vayle (Jack Gore) quienes se ofrecen para ayudar a restaurar la casa, pero paulatinamente Catherine comienza a ver que ambos chicos están ligados al oscuro misterio de su nuevo hogar.
Las cosas entre Catherine y George comienzan a volverse insoportables, el filme es más una historia dramática que un largometraje de terror o suspenso, al ver situaciones en que la pareja se ve afectada por las fuerzas que conviven con ellos. Catherine, es una mujer con trastornos, no solo físicos por su desorden alimenticio sino que también comienza a presentar una actitud apática ante los demás. George parece el típico buen padre de familia, pero a medida que vamos observando, nos damos cuenta que es un mentiroso, narcisista, egocéntrico, que no siente empatía por las necesidades de su esposa y que logra serle infiel con una joven de nombre Willis (Natalia Dyer) a quien conoce en una librería.
The tension of danger and hatred between the two begins to rise, and we see that the drama is centered on the conflicts between the couple, however, the theme of spiritualism has much influence which we appreciate until the end of the film. One day, Catherine receives a visit from Floyd DeBeers (F. Murray Abraham), who establishes a good friendship with her husband George. Floyd, a man who believes in spirits, reveals to Catherine that a benign presence lives in her house and only wants to protect her and her daughter, so he proposes to Catherine to hold a séance with a group of believers. Catherine accepts, but on the condition that George does not find out, since, due to the recent paranormal events and the tension between them, she did not want her husband to think that she is crazy.
Days later, at a party with the Clare's neighbors, Catherine learns the dark secret of their house, at the same time that her husband, knowing the whole story, had completely hidden it from her. From this chronological instant we begin to see a stranger George, delirious and somewhat psychotic, something that is activated in him every time he ingested marijuana cigars offered by the husband of Justine Sokolov (Rhea Seehorn), a fellow professor at the university who realizes that George is not what he seems to be, and tries to save Catherine from his clutches.
La tensión de peligrosidad y odio entre ambos comienza a ascender, y vemos que el drama se centra en los conflictos entre la pareja, sin embargo, el tema del espiritismo tiene mucha influencia lo cual logramos apreciar hasta el final del filme. Un día, Catherine recibe la visita de Floyd DeBeers (F. Murray Abraham), quien establece una buena amistad con su esposo George. Floyd, es un hombre que cree en los espíritus revelándole a Catherine que en su casa vive una presencia benigna que solo quiere protegerla a ella y a su hija, por lo que le propone a Catherine realizar una sesión espiritista con un grupo de creyentes. Catherine acepta, pero con la condición de que George no se entere, puesto que, debido a los últimos eventos paranormales y la tensión entre ellos, no quería que su esposo pensara que ella está loca.
Días después, en una fiesta con los vecinos de los Clare, Catherine se entera del oscuro secreto de su casa, al mismo tiempo que su esposo, sabiendo toda la historia, se la había ocultado por completo. A partir de este instante cronológico comenzamos a ver a un George más extraño, delirante y algo psicótico, algo que se activa en él cada vez que ingería puros de marihuana ofrecidos por el esposo de Justine Sokolov (Rhea Seehorn), una colega profesora de la universidad quien se da cuenta que George no es lo que parece ser, y trata de salvar a Catherine de sus garras.

The mistrust between the couple, the constant fights, the intervention of the spirits who influence Catherine and George's life, this aspect is quite interesting. According to the story, the house had been the scene of women being murdered by their husbands, according to the film, this atrocious calamity was repeated by the original owners of the house, and the husbands, after carrying out their task, placed their name in that Bible, together with that of their wife, using the word "Condemned" as an adjective. In that aspect, the film reminded me of the horror novel "The Shining" by Stephen King, where we have a husband influenced by evil spirits that induces him to kill his family. Nothing new so far, it seems that the supernatural in the film is strongly linked to the dramatic, I understand that the intention of the directors is to create a fairly faithful adaptation to the novel, although failing as a horror film.
La desconfianza entre la pareja, las peleas constantes, la intervención de los espíritus quienes influyen en la vida de Catherine y George, este aspecto es bastante interesante. Según la historia, la casa había sido escenario de mujeres siendo asesinadas por sus esposos, de acuerdo a la película, esta atroz calamidad se repetía desde los dueños originarios de la casa, y los esposos, después de realizar su cometido, colocaban su nombre en aquella Biblia, junto con el de su esposa usando como adjetivo la palabra “Condenada”. En ese aspecto, el filme me hizo recordar a la novela de terror “The Shining” de Stephen King, donde tenemos a un marido influenciado por espíritus malignos que lo induce a matar a su familia. Nada nuevo por ahora, parece que lo sobrenatural en la película va fuertemente ligado con lo dramático, entiendo que la intención de los directores es crear una adaptación bastante fiel a la novela, aunque fallando como filme de terror.
Although it is a film that sends you snippets about a drama in which halfway through, more or less, you know how it is going to end, it is quite difficult to deduce, but in spite of that you can perfectly grasp the protest message it brings, the story condemns the abuse towards women at home, using the supernatural component to imply that all husbands who murder their wives at home have an imminent punishment awaiting them. The picturesque ending of this film can seem confusing, also indecipherable if you watch it with a dubious eye on the analogy on which it is based. It is one of those films where the filmmakers expect the viewers to tie up loose ends themselves, so it is quite difficult to digest, I give it a rating of 6/10 for having an unnecessary boldness that I felt should not have been so prominent in the film.
Aunque es una película que te envía retazos sobre un drama en el que a la mitad, más o menos, sabes cómo va a terminar, es bastante difícil de deducir, pero a pesar de eso se puede captar a la perfección el mensaje protesta que trae, la historia condena el abuso hacia la mujer en el hogar, usando el componente sobrenatural para dar a entender que a todos los maridos que asesinan a sus esposas en casa les espera un castigo inminente. El final pintoresco de esta película puede parecer confuso, también indescifrable si lo ves con una mirada dudosa sobre la analogía en la que está basada. Es de esos filmes en el que los directores esperan que los espectadores aten cabos ellos mismo, por lo que es bastante difícil de digerir, le doy una calificación de 6/10 por tener una osadía innecesaria que me pareció que no debía estar tan remarcada en la película.

El film falla como película del sub genero de casas encantadas porque no hay Jump Scare en las escenas donde aparece el elemento sobrenatural. La escena de la sesión me causo un poco de risa.
El elenco es lo que me atrajo pero termine algo decepcionado. No he leído la novela, pero han fallado en la adaptación. Creo que en la obra escrita se narra con mas precisión a través de flashback y vamos descubriendo el misterio. Creo que hay un personaje policía importante en la novela que va investigando el caso y aquí lo eliminaron.
Sí, no tomaron los aspectos más interesantes que darían una sazón más sabrosa al film, se centraron más en lo dramático de la historia, dejando pequeños espacios para lo extraño y lo sobrenatural, tampoco he leído la novela y ese último detalle que mencionas sobre el policía hubiera sido bastante bueno en la película.
