[ENG-ESP] FILM REVIEW: 'THE SHAPE OF WATER' (2017), A LOVE STORY THAT MAKES A MARK

Within the poetic propositions within cinema, there is a great abundance of fantasy stories that tell us about love, some fail to captivate us or deafen us with a tender sound, although they do provoke stimulation, they do not manage to excite us in such a way that they enrapture us through the simplicity of a story about differences.
*Guillermo del Toro, along with his fantastic universe full of strange creatures, has always had the audacity to impress us, although it is not easy to maintain the same result, as with Pacific Rim and The Scarlet Summit, we think of other stories of his authorship as Labyrinth of the Faun and this one, which I will comment below, which has been one of the most impressive in his entire career as a film director.
The Shape of Water' is a film where fantasy and romanticism go hand in hand. It was premiered on August 31, 2017 at the Venice festival and on December 8 of the same year in the United States. It was directed by Guillermo del Toro and also written by him together with screenwriter and television producer Vanessa Taylor. The film has received good reviews and acquired major awards and nominations at the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Awards include Best Director, Best Score and Best Picture.

Dentro de las proposiciones poéticas dentro del cine, existe una gran abundancia de historias de fantasía que nos hablan del amor, algunas no logran cautivarnos o ensordecernos con un tierno sonido, aunque si provocan estimulo, no llegan a excitarnos de tal manera que nos embelesen a través de la simpleza de una historia sobre las diferencias.
Guillermo del Toro, junto con su universo fantástico lleno de criaturas extrañas, siempre ha tenido la osadía de impresionarnos, aunque tampoco es fácil mantener el mismo resultado, como con Pacific Rim y La cumbre escarlata, pensamos en otras historias de su autoría como el El laberinto del fauno y esta, que a continuación les comentaré, la cual ha sido una de las más impactantes en toda su carrera como director de cine.
‘La forma del agua’ es una película donde lo fantástico y el romanticismo van de la mano. Fue estrenada el 31 de agosto del año 2017 en el festival de Venecia y el 8 de diciembre del mismo año en los Estados Unidos. Fue dirigida por Guillermo del Toro y también escrita por él junto con la guionista y productora de televisión Vanessa Taylor. La película ha recibido buenas críticas y adquisidora de grandes premios y nominaciones en los Óscar, Los globos de Oro y los BAFTA. Entre los premios destacan las categorías a Mejor Director, Mejor Banda Sonora y Mejor Película.
The story makes a proposal of love towards cinema, being about a young mute girl named Elisa Esposito(Sally Hawkins), a cleaning employee in a high-security government laboratory who one day meets an amphibious creature (Doug Jones) who is imprisoned and subjected to brutal experiments, Gradually she begins to have affection for the creature, so she will elaborate a plan with her friends Zelda Delilah Fuller (Octavia Spencer) and Giles (Richard Jenkins), to free the monster.
The plot and what it wants to convey to us is not something we consider "original", however, the way it is told occupies a great significance in our perception. In it we can find influences from films such as The Monster of the Black Lagoon, Free Willy or the famous fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast, it is a mixture of great stories of cinema, even Del Toro has been accused of plagiarism for using such prominent references in this work.
La historia hace una propuesta de amor hacia el cine, tratándose de una joven muda llamada Elisa Esposito(Sally Hawkins), una empleada de limpieza en un laboratorio del gobierno de alta seguridad que un día conoce a una criatura anfibio (Doug Jones) que es apresada y sometida a brutales experimentos, paulatinamente comienza a tener afecto por la criatura, por lo que elaborará un plan junto a sus amigos Zelda Delilah Fuller (Octavia Spencer) y Giles (Richard Jenkins), para liberar al monstruo.
La trama y lo que quiere transmitirnos no es algo que consideremos “original”, sin embargo, la manera en cómo está contada ocupa un gran significado en nuestra percepción. En ella podemos encontrar influencias de películas como El monstruo de la laguna negra, Liberen a Willy o el afamado cuento de hadas de La Bella y la Bestia, es una mezcolanza de grandes relatos del cine, incluso se le ha acusado a Del Toro de plagio por usar referencias tan resaltantes en esta obra.

The perception of beauty is contrasted with a deeper intrusion into feelings, with differences and good hearts taking the lead in this story. The film makes us explore a world where the good guys and the bad guys have a struggle for love, increasing the desire to let it emerge or not. On the side of the bad guys we have Colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), a government man who was charged with guarding the "asset" or "resource", which is the name given to the creature. He is a ruthless, rigid man, capable of annihilating anyone to achieve his purposes without an apparent sign of humanity, but, through his tough layer of psychopathic man, we find a family man living in a nice suburb who seems to be absent from this one.
Strickland is the nemesis of love, despite bearing the traits of the "good", he is a white man, with a social status superior to that of his antagonists, who want to protect the creature. Elisa, who has lost her voice since she was a baby, her vocal cords were taken away, for others, she is seen as an inferior being because of her condition, just like her friend and co-worker Zelda, a black woman who besides having to deal with social segregation, has an indifferent and good-for-nothing husband. Then we have Giles, Elisa's neighbor and friend, an elderly homosexual with a great gift for painting, who presents a great feeling of frustration and loneliness, not only for not being able to find love but also for the fact of not being able to succeed again as an artist.
La percepción de la belleza se contrasta con una intromisión más profunda hacia los sentimientos, siendo las diferencias y los buenos corazones los que llevan la batuta en esta historia. La película nos hace explorar un mundo donde los buenos y los malos tienen una lucha por el amor, incrementando el deseo por dejarlo surgir o no. Dentro del bando de los malos tenemos al Coronel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), un hombre del gobierno que fue encargado de resguardar el “activo” o “recurso”, que es el nombre que le dieron a la criatura. Es un hombre despiadado, rígido, capaz de aniquilar a cualquiera para conseguir sus propósitos sin un signo aparente de humanidad, pero, a través de su dura capa de hombre psicópata, encontramos un padre de familia viviendo en un buen suburbio que parece estar ausente de esta.
Strickland es el némesis del amor, a pesar de llevar los rasgos de lo “bueno”, es un hombre blanco, con un estatus social superior a la de sus antagonistas, quienes quieren proteger a la criatura. Elisa, perdió su voz desde que era una bebé, le fueron arrebatada las cuerdas vocales, para los demás, es vista como un ser inferior debido a su condición, tal y como le pasa a su amiga y compañera de trabajo Zelda, una mujer negra que aparte de que tiene que lidiar con la segregación social, tiene un marido indiferente y bueno para nada. Luego tenemos a Giles, vecino y amigo de Elisa, un anciano homosexual con un gran don para la pintura, el cual presenta un gran sentimiento de frustración y soledad, no solo por no poder encontrar el amor sino por el hecho de no poder triunfar de nuevo como artista.

The film is set in the 60's, an era where we find all these social problems conjugated in a single feature film. Here the good guys are the inferior, the undervalued, the imperfect, who are threatened by the superiors, by those who rule society, who unjustly seek to destroy a noble and innocent creature who understands the body language of her protector, and who can also understand the affection that her lover has for her and he reciprocates. This is an introspection that, despite the differences, the concept of love remains the same.
The message that Del Toro wanted to convey from the title was that love has no form, no conception or theory, it is only a sensation, a feeling that emerges from deep within and overcomes any barrier. The origins are irrelevant, because they do not fit in this compression, and it is that metaphorical value full of simplicity and greatness that makes the idea conveyed by this film has permeated more than in its photography, costumes and cinematic production. I give it a rating of 9/10 and, of course, it will forever remain on my list of films I would watch again.
La película está ambientada en los años 60, una época donde encontraremos todas estas problemáticas sociales conjugadas en un solo largometraje. Aquí los buenos son los inferiores, los infravalorados, los imperfectos, quienes son amenazados por los superiores, por los que llevan la batuta de la sociedad, los cuales injustamente buscan destruir a una criatura noble e inocente que comprende el lenguaje corporal de su protectora, y que además, puede entender el afecto que su amante tiene por ella y él le corresponde. Esta es una introspección de que, a pesar de las diferencias, el concepto del amor sigue siendo el mismo.
El mensaje que Del Toro quiso transmitir a partir del título fue que el amor no tiene forma, ni concepción ni teoría, solo es una sensación, un sentimiento que emerge desde lo más profundo de las entrañas y supera cualquier barrera. Los orígenes son irrelevantes, pues no caben en esta compresión, y es ese valor metafórico repleto de simpleza y la vez grandeza que hace que la idea transmitida por esta película haya calado más que en su fotografía, vestuario y producción cinemática. Le doy una calificación de 9/10 y, por supuesto, quedará para siempre en mi lista de películas que volvería a ver.

I was totally surprised when I watch the movie at first. Such a different romantic movie.💙
Guillermo del Toro usually delivers good movies. I like his work, but he needs to find a way to reinvent himself so he doesn't start to sound so repetitive.
