The poetics of tragedy lies in a compelling plot characterized by characters with traumatic histories that have repercussions in the present, there are events that shock people even provoking them to commit illicit acts that, according to their feelings, can cause them a vestige of satisfaction. Revenge is an engine that moves people and makes them perform such acts, and in this film, we will know one of those Vendetta style stories where a good person will become the monster he never thought to be.
Quien a hierro mata' is a Spanish suspense thriller made by director Paco Plaza and produced by Spanish companies such as Vaca Films, Atresmedia Cine and the French film company Playtime Production. It starred Luis Tosar as Mario, Xan Cejudo as Antonio Padín, Ismael Martínez as Toño, Enric Auquer as Kiko and María Vázquez as Julia. The film was shot in Galicia mainly in Betanzos and to a lesser extent in Cambados. It was released in 2019 with a running time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.

La poética de la tragedia radica en una trama convincente caracterizada por personajes con historias traumáticas que repercuten en el presente, hay eventos que conmocionan a las personas incluso provocando que cometan actos ilícitos que, según sus sentimientos, pueden provocarles un vestigio de satisfacción. La venganza es un motor que conmueve a las personas y hace que realicen este tipo de actos, y en esta película, conoceremos una de esas historias estilo Vendetta donde una persona buena se convertirá en el monstruo que jamás pensó ser.
‘Quien a hierro mata’ es un thriller español de suspenso realizado por el director Paco Plaza y producida por empresas españolas como Vaca Films, Atresmedia Cine y la empresa de cine francesa Playtime Production. Fue protagonizada por Luis Tosar como Mario, Xan Cejudo como Antonio Padín, Ismael Martínez como Toño, Enric Auquer como Kiko y María Vázquez como Julia. La película fue rodada en Galicia principalmente en Betanzos y en menor parte en Cambados. Fue estrenada en el año 2019 con una duración de 1 hora con 47 minutos.
The story is about Mario (Luis Tosar), a head nurse at a nursing home for the elderly in the province of Betanzos in Galicia; a kind, charismatic man loved by all, his colleagues see him as an example to follow since he is a guide with an impeccable reputation, but things start to change when the famous drug dealer Antonio Padín (Xan Cejudo), who has a terrible degenerative disease, enters the home. Once out of the game, Padín's sons: Toño (Ismael Martinez) and Kiko (Enric Auquer), take over the business, but things start to get more complicated so they resort again to the help of his father with Mario as mediator, but he is dominated by impulses that he will not be able to resist.
When we go deeper into the plot, we realize why that title, it is a story in which we realize the vicious circle that puts us to dance revenge, once we fall into it. As we dabble further and further we find an environment full of suspense and darkness, something that characterizes the director Paco Plaza, since the genre in which he most specializes is horror, something that we can appreciate in his previous work; the terrifying film 'Veronica', released in 2017 and starring Sandra Escacena.
La historia trata sobre Mario (Luis Tosar), un jefe de enfermeros de una casa hogar para ancianos en la provincia de Betanzos en Galicia; un hombre amable, carismático y querido por todos, sus compañeros lo ven como un ejemplo a seguir puesto que es un guía con una reputación intachable, pero las cosas empiezan a cambiar cuando en el asilo ingresa el famoso narcotraficante Antonio Padín (Xan Cejudo), quien posee una terrible enfermedad degenerativa. Una vez fuera del juego, los hijos de Padín: Toño (Ismael Martinez) y Kiko (Enric Auquer), se apoderan del negocio, pero las cosas comienzan a ponerse más complicadas por lo que recurren de nuevo a la ayuda de su padre con Mario como mediador, pero este es dominado por unos impulsos a los cuales no se podrá resistir.
Cuando nos adentramos más a la trama, nos damos cuenta del porqué de ese título, es una historia en la que nos damos cuenta del círculo vicioso al que nos pone a bailar la venganza, una vez que caemos en él. Al incursionar cada vez más nos encontramos con un entorno lleno de suspenso y oscuridad, algo que caracteriza al director Paco Plaza, ya que el género en el que más se especializa es el de terror, cosa que podemos apreciar en su anterior trabajo; la terrorífica película ’Verónica’, estrenada en 2017 y protagonizada por Sandra Escacena.

In a film of this kind, the shots are very important to sow a sense of intrigue and mystery, and in this case I think he did a great job Pablo Rosso, the cinematographer who has made us see between substantial frames the situations that each character lives. Although the feature film at the beginning may seem to many to be somewhat "slow", it is irrelevant because it does not affect much in the story that deserves to be told slowly and without haste, thinking that the viewer not only appreciate the plot but the other elements that accompany it.
When I saw the poster of the movie and read the first three lines of its synopsis, I thought it was another boring film about drug dealers, but after watching it with my partner, I realized that it was quite the opposite. It is a dramatic story that suspends you little by little, especially when you follow the footsteps of Mario, the main protagonist, who feels a lot of hatred towards the old Antonio, because of a terrible event in his past that I will not reveal, but what I can tell you is that it is a moment of reflection, where a person, no matter how good he is, if he has the opportunity to take his revenge, he will do it without a doubt.
En una película de esta estirpe, son muy importantes los planos para poder sembrar una sensación de intriga y misterio, y en este caso pienso que hizo un gran trabajo Pablo Rosso, el encargado de fotografía quien nos ha hecho ver entre cuadros sustanciales las situaciones que cada personaje vive. Aunque el largometraje al principio puede parecerle a muchos algo “lento”, es irrelevante pues no afecta mucho en la historia que merece ser contada despacio y sin prisa, pensando en que el espectador no solo aprecie la trama sino los demás elementos que la acompañan.
Cuando vi el poster de la película y leí las tres primeras líneas de su sinopsis, pensaba que era otro aburrido filme de narcotraficantes, pero después de verla junto con mi pareja, me di cuenta que era todo lo contrario. Es una historia dramática que te suspende poco a poco, especialmente cuando sigues las huellas de Mario, el protagonista principal, quien siente mucho odio hacia el viejo Antonio, por un suceso terrible de su pasado que no les pienso revelar, pero lo que sí puedo decirles es que es un momento de reflexión, donde una persona, por más buena que sea, si tiene la oportunidad de tomar su venganza lo hará sin lugar a dudas.

The acting cast has been spectacular, and I was surprised to run into Enric Auquer in this film, who I recognized immediately from the series Sky Rojo (2021) of the streaming service Netflix. On this occasion he plays Kiko, one of Antonio's sons, with a terrific performance as a drug dealer thug as he knows how to do it, it is not for nothing that thanks to this film he was worth a Goya award as 'Best New Actor' in 2019.
Other performances that I loved is that of Luis Tosar as Mario and Xan Cejudo as Antonio Padín, being the first one one of the most renowned artists in the genre Thrillers recognized for his great performance in the film Celda 211 (2019), winner of 8 Goya awards including the category of best 'Best Film' and 'Best Actor' for Tosar in 2019. And the second one: Cejudo, as a curious fact, I found it unfortunate that this actor passed away a year before the release of this film, as I found his interpretation as a cantankerous old man with a degenerative disease more than convincing, I felt sorry for the old man despite being a famous cold-blooded drug dealer.
El reparto actoral ha sido espectacular, y tuve la sorpresa de toparme en esta película con Enric Auquer, quien lo reconocí inmediatamente por la serie Sky Rojo (2021) del servicio de streaming Netflix. En esta ocasión interpreta a Kiko, uno de los hijos de Antonio, con una actuación estupenda como matón narcotraficante tal y como él la sabe hacer, no es por nada que gracias a esta película se valiera de un premio Goya como ‘Mejor actor revelación’ en el año 2019.
Otras de las interpretaciones que me ha encantado es la de Luis Tosar como Marioy la de Xan Cejudo como Antonio Padín, siendo el primero uno de los artistas con más renombre en el género Thrillers reconocido por su gran interpretación en la película Celda 211 (2019), ganadora de 8 premios Goya incluyendo la categoría a mejor ‘Mejor Película’ y ‘Mejor Actor’ para Tosar en el año 2019. Y el segundo: Cejudo, como dato curioso, me pareció lamentable que este actor haya fallecido un año antes del estreno de esta película, ya que su interpretación como un anciano cascarrabias con una enfermedad degenerativa me pareció más que convincente, sentí pena por el anciano a pesar de ser un famoso narcotraficante a sangre fría.

I found the film to be a genius, a revenge thriller with all the elements I was looking for, honoring the famous phrase Who kills with iron... dies with iron, because ironically the past comes to us and it is in our hands to have to face it. For its scenes that take you deeper and deeper into a mystery that becomes revealing, for its cast where some are iconic and have managed to give essence to the characters and for a different story in which we not only see the typical drug dealers, I give the film a 8.5/10 and I recommend it to all those who are interested in this type of film.
La película me ha parecido una genialidad, un thriller de venganza con todos los elementos que buscaba, haciéndole honor a la famosa frase Quien a hierro mata… a hierro muere, pues irónicamente el pasado viene a nosotros y está en nuestras manos tener que enfrentarlo. Por sus escenas que te adentran cada vez más a un misterio que se vuelve revelador, por su reparto actoral donde algunos son icónicos y han sabido darle esencia a los personajes y por una historia diferente en la que no solo vemos la típica de narcotraficantes, le doy a la película un 8.5/10 y la recomiendo para todos aquellos que les interesa este tipo de filmes.
