There are beautiful stories in cinema, which broaden the mind from a dramatic perspective full of romance with strong hits of tragedy, which depending on your mood or not, become deafening and even mark us with all the impetus of feelings. The stories based on real life are the strongest, most intriguing and possess that quality that marks us for life. I was looking for new emotions and I came across this jewel of a story that marked me and made me reflect.

It is for this reason that for this occasion I wanted to present a beautiful story full of romance and drama: 'Holding the man', which is an Australian LGBTIQ+ drama film, based on the eponymous "No-Fiction" novel by Timothy Conigrave, which tells his story from his childhood to his demise. It was directed by Australian director Neil Armfield (Candy), who has highlighted his career with this film. The feature film was released in 2015 and distributed by the streaming service Netflix on March 21, 2020.

Hay historias hermosas en el cine, que amplían la mente desde una perspectiva dramática llena de romance con fuertes golpes de tragedia, que dependiendo de tu estado de ánimo o no, se vuelven ensordecedoras y hasta nos marcan con todo el ímpetu de los sentimientos. Las historias basadas en la vida real son las más fuertes, intrigantes y poseen esa cualidad que nos marca de por vida. Estaba en busca de nuevas emociones y me conseguí con esta joya de historia que me marco y me hizo reflexionar.

Es por esta razón que para esta ocasión les quería presentar una hermosa historia llena de romance y drama: ‘Holding the man’, la cual es una película de drama australiana LGBTIQ+, basada en la novela homónima de “No-Fiction” de Timothy Conigrave, la cual cuenta su historia desde su niñez hasta su deceso. Fue dirigida por el director australiano Neil Armfield (Candy), quien ha destacado su trayectoria con esta película. El largometraje fue estrenada en 2015 y distribuida por el servicio de Streaming Netflix el 21 de marzo de 2020.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a true story set in the 70's, 80's and 90's about two young men: Timothy Conigrave (Ryan Corr) and John Caleo (Craig Stott), who meet at the Catholic high school where they studied as teenagers, fall in love and have a romantic relationship. Since then, they have to deal with their families, bad comments, prejudices, temptations and bad times, but their 15-year relationship will be interrupted by something that love cannot fight.

The screenplay was made by Tommy Murphy, based on the biographical book of Timothy Conigrave and being faithful to it, although skipping a little the events prior to Tim's adolescence, since the film begins from the adolescence of the protagonist, at the time when he begins to forge a relationship with the love of his life. Timothy is a theater buff where he lands a role as Paris in William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet'. John, is the captain of his school's Rugby team who begins a friendship with Timothy, but their friendship will turn into love when they both begin to realize their feelings for each other.

Como he mencionado anteriormente, esta es una historia real ambientada en los años 70’s, 80’s y 90’s que trata acerca de dos jóvenes: Timothy Conigrave (Ryan Corr) y John Caleo (Craig Stott), que se conocen en el instituto católico donde estudiaban desde adolescentes, se enamoran y mantienen una relación sentimental. Desde entonces, tienen que lidiar con sus familias, los malos comentarios, los prejuicios, las tentaciones y los malos ratos, pero sus 15 años de relación se verán interrumpidos por algo que el amor no puede combatir.

El guión fue realizado por Tommy Murphy, basándose en el libro biográfico de Timothy Conigrave y siendo fiel a este, aunque saltándose un poco los acontecimientos previos a la adolescencia de Tim, ya que la película comienza a partir de la adolescencia del protagonista, en el momento en que comienza forjar una relación con el amor de su vida. Timothy es una aficionado al teatro donde consigue un papel como Paris en la obra de William Shakespeare, ‘Romeo y Julieta’. John, es el capitán del equipo de Rugby de su colegio quien empieza una amistad con Timothy, pero su amistad se transformará en amor cuando ambos comienzan a darse cuenta de sus sentimientos mutuos.

The story is divided into three eras, the 70's, 80's and 90's, with a wonderful casting well committed to the acting and the role they were meant to play. What I like about a film, apart from the elements that characterize it, is its look, mainly the costumes and the environments, which have been well matched using the actors themselves. The music is another fundamental element, it was made by Alan John categorizing sensations that emerge according to the situation. The viewer can easily follow the rhythm of the film and get caught up in it.

One aspect to highlight is the personality of the characters and everything we can see in the environment. Family confrontations, the struggle for gay rights in the late 70's and early 80's, promiscuity, the problem of sexually transmitted diseases especially at the time of the AIDS pandemic and all these issues that believe it or not, are more current than ever and are touched in a single film.

La historia se divide en tres épocas, los 70’s, 80’s y 90’s, con un casting maravilloso bien comprometido con la actuación y el rol que les correspondía desempeñar. Lo que me gusta de una película, aparte de los elementos que la caracterizan, es su aspecto, principalmente el vestuario y los entornos, que se han acoplado bien usando a los mismo actores. La música es otro elemento fundamental, fue realizada por Alan John categorizando sensaciones que van emergiendo de acuerdo a la situación. El espectador puede fácilmente seguir el ritmo de la película y quedarse atrapado con ella.

Un aspecto a resaltar son la personalidad de los personajes y todo lo que podemos ver en el ambiente. Las confrontaciones familiares, la lucha de derechos de los homosexuales a finales de los 70’s y principios de 80’s, la promiscuidad, la problemática de enfermedades de transmisión sexual sobretodo en la época de la pandemia del SIDA y todos estos temas que aunque no lo creas son más actuales que nunca son tocados en un una sola película.

Tim and John face a variety of problems in their 15 year relationship, their love transcends the problems that attack them, but in the end, they succumb to something that love cannot repair. Both were diagnosed with HIV, something that abruptly changed the course of the relationship, but at the same time improved it, creating a much stronger bond between them.

Before this agony that consumes them physically gradually, come other hardships such as dementia, disguised with a deadly mask and which both will have to face, but the love they both feel remained until the end, and that is how the film explains the motivation that Tim had to develop his autobiographical novel. **John Caleo died in 1991 from cancer caused by AIDS, Tim was with him until his last moments. Then, 3 years later, Timothy Conigrave died at the age of 34, his memoirs were published 2 years after his death.

Tim y John enfrentan una gran variedad de problemas en sus 15 años de relación, su amor trasciende enfrentando los problemas que los atacan, pero al final, sucumben ante algo que el amor no puede reparar. Ambos fueron diagnosticados con VIH, algo que cambió el rumbo de la relación abruptamente, pero a la vez la mejoró, creando un lazo mucho más fuerte entre ellos.

Ante esta agonía que los consume físicamente paulatinamente, llegan otras penurias como la demencia, disfrazada con una máscara mortal y la que ambos tendrán que enfrentar, pero el amor que sienten los dos se mantuvo hasta el final, y es así como en el largometraje nos explican la motivación que tuvo Tim para elaborar su novela autobiográfica. John Caleo muere en el 1991 a causa de un cáncer provocado por el SIDA, Tim estuvo con él hasta en sus últimos momentos. Posteriormente, 3 años después muere Timothy Conigrave a la edad de 34 años, sus memorias fueron publicadas 2 años después de su muerte.

The background of the plot is an allegory to the tragic play of William Shakespeare, 'Romeo and Juliet' where it speaks of the loss of a loved one, because of hardship and wrong decisions, perhaps because Timothy Conigrave himself was a theater actor inspired by those great playwrights. The loss of the beloved by "Paris" who was Juliet's fiancé but she chose Romeo, within the movie we can appreciate this scene, where Tim plays this character in a play during his high school years. I thought it was genius that in the script they placed this reference to prepare us for what is to come.

This film is a tough-as-nails work of art that celebrates the life of a person who not only lived his love story to the fullest but also left us his memories, his dreams and unattainable struggle as an activist for gay rights. We must not forget that the time in which the characters lived were different times just in 1990 homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness and until 1998 for the first time a country declared the right to equal marriage. I recommend this masterpiece, you will not regret it. I give it a wonderful 9/10.

El trasfondo de la trama es una alegoría a la obra teatral trágica de William Shakespeare, ‘Romeo y Julieta’ donde se habla de la pérdida de un ser amado, a causa de la penuria y las decisiones equívocas esto quizás porque el propio Timothy Conigrave era un actor de teatro inspirado por esos grandes dramaturgos. La pérdida de la amada por parte de “Paris” quien fue el prometido de Julieta pero ésta escogió a Romeo, dentro de la película podemos apreciar esta escena, donde Tim interpreta a este personaje en una obra teatral durante sus años en el instituto. Me pareció una genialidad que en el guión colocaran esta referencia para prepararnos para lo que subsiguientemente vendrá.

Esta película es una obra de arte dura como la vida real que festeja la vida de una persona que no solo vivió al máximo su historia de amor sino que también nos dejó sus memorias, sus sueños y lucha inalcanzable como activista en pro de los derechos de los homosexuales. No debemos olvidar que el tiempo en el cual vivieron los personajes eran tiempos distintos apenas en 1990 la homosexualidad dejó de ser considerada una enfermedad mental y hasta 1998 para que por primera vez un país declarara el derecho al matrimonio igualitario. Te recomiendo esta pieza maestra, no te arrepentirás. Le doy un maravilloso de 9/10.
