[ENG-ESP] ALICE IN BORDERLAND, A GAME THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SURVIVE

For days now, while rummaging through my computer looking for something entertaining to watch, I came across several options that looked quite interesting, but none managed to catch my attention as much as Alice in Borderland, that upon seeing the cover and reading a short paragraph of its synopsis, I did not hesitate to play the first chapter instantly.
Here we have before us a masterful work of art from Japan, Alice in Borderland, is a series on the Netflix platform, with one season (for the moment) of 8 chapters of 52 minutes, directed by Shinsuke Sato. Based on the suspense and science fiction manga Imawa no Kuni no Alice by Haro Aso, the series has become one of the most dazzling promises of the streaming platform, becoming since its release on December 10, 2020, into one of the most watched TV series in Asian territory, especially in places such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. In Canada, its popularity was such that it occupied a place in the Top 10 of the most watched series in this country. In general, the series performed better in Asia and Europe.

Desde hace días, mientras hurgaba por mi computadora buscando algo entretenido que ver, me topé con varias opciones que se veían bastante interesantes, pero ninguna logró llamar tanto mi atención como Alice in Borderland, que al ver la portada y leer un párrafo corto de su sinopsis, no dudé en reproducir el primer capítulo al instante.
Aquí tenemos ante nosotros una obra de arte magistral de Japón, Alice in Borderland, es una serie de la plataforma Netflix, con una temporada (por el momento) de 8 capítulos de 52 minutos, dirigida por Shinsuke Sato. Basada en el manga de suspenso y ciencia ficción Imawa no Kuni no Alice de Haro Aso, la serie se ha convertido en una de las promesas más deslumbrantes de la plataforma de streaming, convirtiéndose desde su lanzamiento el 10 de diciembre del año 2020, en una de las series de televisión más vistas en territorio asiático, especialmente en lugares como Malasia, Hong Kong, Filipinas, Singapur, Taiwán, Tailandia y Vietnam. En Canadá, su popularidad fue tal, que ocupó un lugar en el Top 10 de las series más vistas en este país. En general, la serie tuvo mejores resultados en países de Asia y Europa.
With a rather intriguing story and a plot that would make our hair stand on end, Alice in Borderland, takes us to a world similar to Gantz or Battle Royale, two influences that I'm sure the director has not let go unnoticed. The name of the series, as much as of the manga, is an allusion to the work of Lewis Carroll: Alice in Wonderland where we can clearly see accents of this classic, especially with the appearance of the number and figure cards.
The story begins with three friends: Ryohei Arisu or Alice (Kento Yamazaki), Daikichi Karube (Keita Machida) and Chota Segawa (Yuki Morinaga), who while fleeing from the police, hide in a public toilet inside Shibuya station to later find a Tokyo totally deserted, soon, they meet a woman who tells them that they must play a series of deadly survival games to survive that world. Although they never explain how people suddenly get there and I hope they do in the next season.
The series gives you the feeling that you are looking at some sort of macabre utopia where the players are forced to play for their lives, there are lasers that are beamed down from the sky by some sort of unknown satellite that will not hesitate to end the players' lives if they don't continue with the rules of this world. The players receive instructions to win the games through smartphones that also tell them the time elapsed since there is a limit to win. An atmosphere of psychological horror hangs over the characters, establishing in them a single instinctive thought; that of survival.
Con una historia bastante intrigante y una trama que nos haría poner los pelos de punta, Alice in Borderland, nos lleva a un mundo parecido al de Gantz o Battle Royale, dos influencias que estoy seguro que el director no habrá dejado pasar desapercibidas. El nombre de la serie, tanto como del manga, es una alusión a la obra de Lewis Carroll: Alice in Wonderland donde claramente podemos ver acotaciones de este clásico, especialmente con la aparición de los naipes de números y figuras.
La historia comienza con tres amigos: Ryohei Arisu o Alice (Kento Yamazaki), Daikichi Karube (Keita Machida) y Chota Segawa (Yuki Morinaga), que mientras huían de la policía, se esconde en un baño público dentro de la estación Shibuya para después encontrarse con una Tokio totalmente desierta, pronto, conocen a una mujer que les dice que deben de jugar una serie de juegos mortales de supervivencia para sobrevivir a ese mundo. Aunque nunca explican como las personas de repente llegan allí y espero que lo hagan en la siguiente temporada.
La serie te da la sensación de que estás ante una especie de utopía macabra donde los jugadores son forzados a jugar por sus vidas, existen láseres que son emitidos desde el cielo por una especie de satélite desconocido y que no dudarán en acabar con la vida de los jugadores sino continúan con las reglas de este mundo. Los jugadores reciben instrucciones para ganar los juegos a través de smartphones que les indican también el tiempo transcurrido ya que hay un límite para ganar. Una atmósfera de horror psicológico se sitúa sobre los personajes, estableciendo en ellos un único pensamiento instintivo; el de sobrevivir.

The series made me rekindle a clear reference to the anime Sword Art Online, which is about a virtual world where players are trapped by a kind of game master, so they must play and level up if they want to survive. In Alice in Borderland there is no such virtual world. When players complete a game, they receive a card of cards according to the difficulty, which, according to the story, will serve them at the end to get out of that world.
Within the plot we will find gore scenes with exaggerated exposure of blood (something that apparently Asians are obsessed with), interesting characters like the protagonist, Arisu, who is an unemployed bum that the only thing he does is play video games, but thanks to this, he has forged a great audacity to survive. His companion Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), a talented mountaineer, joins forces with him to unravel the mystery behind the horror and together survive the games.
La serie me hizo reavivar una referencia clara con el anime Sword Art Online, el cual trata sobre un mundo virtual donde los jugadores quedan atrapados por una especie de amo del juego, por lo que deben de jugar y subir de niveles si quieren sobrevivir. En Alice in Borderland no hay tal mundo virtual. Los jugadores al completar un juego, reciben una carta de naipes de acuerdo a la dificultad, las cuales, según la historia, les servirán al final para salir de ese mundo.
Dentro de la trama encontraremos escenas gore con exagerada exposición de sangre (algo con lo que al parecer los asiáticos están obsesionados), personajes interesantes como el protagonista, Arisu, quien es un vago desempleado que lo único que hace es jugar videojuegos, pero gracias a esto, ha forjado una gran audacia para sobrevivir. Su compañera Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), una alpinista talentosa, une fuerzas con él para desentrañar el misterio que envuelve todo ese horror y juntos sobrevivir a los juegos.
Original imageThere are also other characters worth admiring rather than hating, such as Chishiya (Murakami Nijiro), one of the smartest and most dangerous characters, who will use his wits to get out of the place at all costs. As the characters search for a way to survive in the style of The Walking Dead or the macabre game of Russian Roulette, the maneuvers are slowly unfolding and the players are forced to choose life or death.
The series is quite entertaining for its action-adventure content, keeping with the Shōnen genre of teamwork manga. Although I have not yet had the opportunity to watch the animated version of this series (Which only deals with the first three chapters), the live action for me has not been disappointing, and is that the story is not at all boring, even if it contains elements that have already been used in advance, which is something that does not bother me, as long as the seasoning of intrigue keeps me tied more and more. I'm looking forward to the second season as I can't wait for all the secrets of this world to be revealed to me.
También hay otros personajes dignos de admirar que de odiar como Chishiya (Murakami Nijiro), quien es uno de los personajes más listos y peligrosos, el cual usará su ingenio para poder salir de ese lugar a toda costa. Mientras los personajes buscan la manera de sobrevivir al estilo The Walking Dead o el macabro juego de La Ruleta Rusa, las maniobras se van gestando poco a poco y los jugadores son forzados en elegir la vida o la muerte.
La serie es bastante entretenida por su contenido de acción y aventura, manteniendo el género Shōnen de los mangas en trabajo de equipo. Aunque aún no he tenido la oportunidad de ver la versión animada de esta serie (La cual solo trata sobre los tres primeros capítulos), el live action para mí no ha sido decepcionante, y es que la historia no es para nada aburrida, aunque contenga elementos que ya se han usado con antelación, lo cual es algo que no me molesta, siempre y cuando la sazón de intriga me mantenga amarrado cada vez más. Espero con ansias la segunda temporada ya que no puedo esperar a que se me revelen todo los secretos de este mundo.

When I saw the title of this series I was not expecting what we ended up getting. This series was wonderful in my opinion and I am very much looking forward to season 2. It has everything, especially the really sad episode that I am not going to spoil but i am sure you remember :)
