League of Movies (Second Edition | Week 04): The Shape of Water

Oscar winner 2018, is The Shape of water really the movie of the year 2018? It's hard to give a definitive answer to that question. It was certainly one of the most beautiful and above all well made films. Thanks to its director: Guillermo Del Toro. With this film we return to the era of the "Labyrinth of the Faun", a dreamlike and incredible fairy tale that wants to be both a tribute to cinema and something deeper and more current.
The film does not have the authoritativeness of "The Hidden Thread" by Anderson, it does not have the vision and editing of the Nolanian "Dunkirk", it lacks the photography of "Blade Runner" by Villeneuve, or the classicism of "The Post" and certainly lacks the delicacy of our "Call Me By Your Name" and the eclecticism of "Three Posters to Ebbing" but the creature of Del Toro has something that others have not been able to demonstrate: the lightness of telling an incredible fairy tale and convincing the audience that it could be true.

Personally, I believe that the great power of the "Water Form" lies in its ability to transcend the boundaries of disbelief and make us believe that there really is a universe where a sea creature can be a God and can fall in love with an outcast of society, a princess without a voice as defined by the character played by the excellent Richard Jenkins at the beginning of the story. Very good, though not very original, the stunt to overturn the monstrosity in the appearance of the sea creature on the monstrosity in the facts and soul of the villain of the film, played by the ever excellent Michael Shannon. The Cold War-style setting is a wise choice by Del Toro to make the struggle for the monstrous creature and its subsequent escape plausible. Honorable mention for the ever excellent Octavia Spencer, but stealing the scene for once is her partner and Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins in the first real role of a certain level. Her performance as Elisa is light, dreamy and suave and she is always the protagonist of the best scenes of the film. Among all of them, in my opinion, the scene of the submerged dance inside the bathroom of Elisa's house, completely covered with water, deserves a special attention.
Here is the water, the real protagonist of the film. Here, too, is Del Toro's splendid work, which recalls from the title the real thread of the film. Water is the realm of the creature, water is the element of the birth and abandonment of the orphan Elisa, it is in water that the cult scenes of the film emerge, it is under water that the epilogue will take place and in water the rebirth will take place. The shape of the water, that is to say the adaptation to the one we love, the taking shape according to the envelope we choose to love. A shapeless form, a continuous reference to love: for the cinema, for the human being and for love itself.

Trionfatore degli Oscar 2018, The Shape of water è davvero il film dell'anno 2018? Difficile dare una risposta definitiva a questa domanda. Di certo è stato uno dei film più belli e soprattutto ben fatti. Merito del suo regista: Guillermo Del Toro. Con questa pellicola si ritorna all'epoca del "Labirinto del Fauno", una favola onirica e incredibile che vuole essere al tempo stesso un tributo al cinema e un qualcosa di più profondo ed attuale.
Il film non ha l'autorialità de "Il filo Nascosto"di Anderson, non ha la visione e il montaggio del Nolaniano "Dunkirk", manca della fotografia del "Blade Runner" di Villeneuve, o il classicismo di "The Post" e di certo manca della delicatezza del nostro "Call Me By Your Name" e l'eclettismo di "Tre Manifesti ad Ebbing" ma la creatura di Del Toro ha qualcosa che altri non hanno saputo dimostrare: la leggerezza nel raccontare una favola incredibile e convincere il pubblico che essa possa essere vera.

Personalmente credo che la grande potenza della "Forma dell'acqua" stia nella sua capacità di trascendere i confini dell'incredulità e farci credere che esista davvero un universo in cui una creatura marina possa essere un Dio e possa innamorarsi di una reietta della società, una principessa senza voce come la definisce il personaggio interpretato dall'eccelso Richard Jenkins all'inizio della storia. Ottima, per quanto non originalissima, la trovata di ribaltare la mostruosità nelle apparenze della creatura marina sulla mostruosità nei fatti e nell'animo del villain del film, interpretato dal sempre eccellente Michael Shannon. L'ambientazione in stile guerra fredda rappresenta una scelta saggia di Del Toro per rendere plausibile la lotta per l'accaparrarsi la mostruosa creatura e la conseguente fuga. Menzione d'onore per la sempre ottima Octavia Spencer, ma a rubarle la scena per una volta è la sua partner e candidata all'oscar Sally Hawkins al primo vero ruolo di un certo livello. La sua interpretazione di Elisa è leggera, sognante e soave ed è sempre lei la protagonista delle scene meglio riuscite del film. Fra tutte, a mio avviso, merita un occhio di riguardo la scena del ballo sommerso all'interno del bagno della casa di Elisa, completamente coperto d'acqua.
Ecco l'acqua, la vera protagonista del film. Anche qui splendido lavoro di Del Toro, che richiama fin dal titolo il vero filo conduttore della pellicola. E' l'acqua il regno della creatura, è l'acqua l'elemento della nascita e dell'abbandono dell'orfanella Elisa, è nell'acqua che emergono le scene cult del film, è sotto l'acqua che avverrà l'epilogo e in acqua la rinascita. La forma dell'acqua, ovvero l'adattarsi a chi si ama, il prendere forma a seconda dell'involucro che sceglieremo di amare. Una forma informe, un continuo rimando all'amore: per il cinema, per l'essere umano e per l'amore stesso.
