Mi opinión sobre GLEE: Lo bueno y lo malo | My thoughts about GLEE: The good and not so good

ESPAÑOL.jpg Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de volver a ver una de mis series favoritas de la vida: GLEE. Esta serie la ví por primera vez cuando tenía como 12 años y la transmitían en Fox. Me gustó tanto que me hizo enamorarme por completo de la música y el teatro, amores que conservo hasta el día de hoy.

Una de las cosas que me gusta de volver a ver series que ya he visto antes es comparar el criterio que tenía en ese entonces con el que tengo ahora, y es algo que experimenté viendo de nuevo Glee. Aún sigo amando esta serie con el corazón, pero como nada en la vida es perfecto hoy voy a hablar de las cosas que me encantaron y las que no me encantaron tanto.

I recently had the opportunity to re-watch one of my favorite series of my life: GLEE. I saw this series for the first time when I was about 12 years old and it was on Fox. I loved it so much that it made me fall in love with music and theater, loves that I still have to this day.

One of the things I like about re-watching series I've seen before is comparing the criteria I had back then with the one I have now, and that's something I experienced watching Glee again. I still love this series with my heart, but since nothing in life is perfect today I'm going to talk about the things I loved and the things I didn't love so much.

What is GLEE?


Glee es una serie de comedia musical adolescente creada por Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk e Ian Brennan. Cuenta la historia del club de coro teatral en la preparatoria McKinley y su profesor que intenta motivarlos para alcanzar un campeonato nacional.

Esta serie tuvo un gran impacto cultural, entrando en el top 10 de las series más influyentes de la historia. Fue aclamada por muchísima gente, incluyéndome. Soy una gleek (como se les llama a los fans de la serie) Aunque amo esta serie por muchas razones, debo admitir que no es la mejor y cometieron muchísimos errores en la realización de los que les voy a hablar hoy.

Glee is a teen musical comedy series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan. It tells the story of the theatrical glee club at McKinley High School and their teacher who tries to motivate them to reach a national championship.

This series had a huge cultural impact, entering the top 10 most influential series in history. It was acclaimed by many, many people, including me. I am a gleek (as the fans of the series are called). Although I love this series for many reasons, I must admit that it is not the best and they made a lot of mistakes in the making that I am going to talk about today.

The good things about GLEE

MUSIC


Glee funciona muy bien como musical. Tiene covers muy enganchantes y muchas veces con arreglos propios y mashups que le dan un toque original a las canciones, como el de Rumor Has It/ Someone Like you o el de Thriller/Heads will Roll. En este aspecto, otra cosa que me gusta mucho es la diversidad musical que tiene esta serie. Al ser una serie adolescente uno esperaría que se quedaran en géneros populares como el pop, pero todo lo contrario. Cantaban Queen, The Beattles, Elton John, canciones de musicales y más.

La serie te permite descubrir música de otras épocas, géneros y artistas que tal vez no sean tu primera elección. Creo que al ser una serie tan diversa en sentido musical, de verdad aprendes mucho de música, lo cual yo particularmente valoro muchísimo.

Además de eso, la serie cuenta con una canción original: Loser like me. Esta canción plasma correctamente la esencia de la trama y los personajes, pues habla de los marginados que al final se levantan de las cenizas en las que los han dejado los golpes. Considero que es una canción muy buena y llena de mucha energía musical que hubiera sido una intro perfecta para Glee si esta la hubiese tenido.

Glee works very well as a musical. It has very engaging covers and many times with its own arrangements and mashups that give an original touch to the songs, such as Rumor Has It/ Someone Like you or Thriller/Heads will Roll. In this aspect, another thing that I really like is the musical diversity that this series has. Being a teen series one would expect them to stick to popular genres like pop, but quite the opposite. They sing Queen, The Beattles, Elton John, songs from musicals and more.

The series allows you to discover music from other eras, genres and artists that may not be your first choice. I think that being such a diverse series in a musical sense, you really learn a lot about music, which I particularly appreciate.

In addition to that, the series has an original song: Loser like me. This song correctly captures the essence of the plot and the characters, as it talks about the outcasts who in the end rise from the ashes in which the blows have left them. I consider it a very good song full of musical energy that would have been a perfect intro for Glee if it had had it.

CONTENT


Glee tocó temas polémicos para el año en el que fue creada y fue una de estas series que comenzó todo el tema de la inclusión hablando de homofobia, transfobia, racismo, bullying y demás. Es cierto que hoy esto es algo que hemos visto en miles de producciones como Euphoria (con el personaje de Jules) o Sex Education (con el personaje de Eric), pero considerando que cuando Glee fue creada hace 11 años no habían producciones que trataran estos temas fue algo innovador y que comenzó a darle visibilidad a minorías discriminadas y sus problemáticas.

En cuanto a la visibilidad de problemáticas, me gustó mucho que mostraran lo infravalorados que están los programas de artes y humanidades en la sociedad y especialmente en Estados Unidos. La falta de presupuesto, las constantes amenazas de cierre del programa, el bullying...Son cosas que pasan y esta serie nos ayuda a verlo. Además de que por su influencia, hizo que ser parte de un programa de arte fuera algo cool, lo que ayuda a eliminar el estigma de los artistas y que tal vez más personas se interesen por estas áreas que son tan importantes.

Glee touched controversial topics for the year in which it was created and was one of these series that started the whole issue of inclusion talking about homophobia, transphobia, racism, bullying and so on. It is true that today this is something we have seen in thousands of productions such as Euphoria (with the character of Jules) or Sex Education (with the character of Eric), but considering that when Glee was created 11 years ago there were no productions that dealt with these issues, it was something innovative and that began to give visibility to discriminated minorities and their problems.

As for the visibility of issues, I really liked that they showed how undervalued arts and humanities programs are in society and especially in the United States. The lack of budget, the constant threats of program closure, bullying...These are things that happen and this series helps us to see it. Besides the fact that because of its influence, it made being part of an arts program cool, which helps to remove the stigma of artists and maybe more people will be interested in these areas that are so important.

RELATABLE CHARACTERS


Los personajes de Glee están muy bien construidos, son personas con las que puedes sentirte identificado, y por eso es que tuvo tanto impacto cultural. Incluso al construir antagonistas como Sue o como Dave Karovsky le dan profundidad al personaje, un background que te ayuda a entender porque el personaje actúa así y en muchísimas ocasiones a mi me hicieron empatizar con sus antagonistas.

También debo decir que muchos personajes que formaban parte del elenco principal estaban un poco mal de la cabeza jajajaja y aún así no dejan de ser buenos personajes, sino que los hacen más realistas.

Glee's characters are very well constructed, they are people you can identify with, and that's why it had such a cultural impact. Even when building antagonists like Sue or Dave Karovsky they give depth to the character, a background that helps you understand why the character acts that way and in many occasions they made me empathize with their antagonists.

I must also say that many of the characters that were part of the main cast were a little off in the head hahahaha and yet they are still good characters, but they make them more realistic.

The bad things about GLEE


Tal como dije antes, nada es perfecto en esta vida y no todo lo que brilla es Oro. Glee no es la excepción a estos refranes, así que comenzaré a quejarme de las cosas que no me gustaron de la serie.
As I said before, nothing is perfect in this life and not all that glitters is gold. Glee is no exception to these sayings, so I'll start complaining about the things I didn't like about the show.

UNREALISTIC SITUATIONS


Esta probablemente es una de las cosas que más me incomoda de la serie, su falta de realismo absurda. He aquí algunos ejemplos:
  • Todos sus personajes se van a vivir juntos en Nueva York después de la graduación: Creo que sinceramente fue ridículo. En mi experiencia personal ningún grupo tan grande permanece unido después de la graduación, y mucho menos se mudan todos juntos. Además todos llegaban en el momento más conveniente ¿acaso ninguno tenía una vida después de Glee?
  • La bodega del dolor de Sue: ¿Recuerdan ese almacén donde Sue Silvester tenía guardadas un montón de cosas del Club Glee y las cosas por las que le guardaba rencor? Incluso tenía fotos de Kurt y Blaine para recordar su objetivo de hacerlos reconciliarse (y después los secuestra sin tener ninguna consecuencia legal). Me pareció innecesario para la trama y un poco ridículo. Sue era una mujer mala, grosera e irreverente que se salía con la suya siempre que quería, y en las primeras temporadas lo logró de una manera realista pero después al introducirle argumentos como ese, caricaturizaron al personaje convirtiéndola en una villana de Disney en una serie de la vida real.
  • La Madre biológica de Rachel: Solo diré que resultó muy "conveniente" que la profesora de Vocal Adrenaline resultara ser la madre biológica de Rachel Berry, una situación que parece salida de una telenovela de Univisión.
This is probably one of the things that makes me most uncomfortable about the series, its absurd lack of realism. Here are some examples:
  • All your characters go to live together in New York after graduation: I think it was honestly ridiculous. In my personal experience no group that large stays together after graduation, let alone all move in together. Plus they all came at the most convenient time - didn't any of them have a life after Glee?
  • Sue's Pain Cellar: Remember that storage room where Sue Silvester kept a bunch of stuff from the Glee Club and the things she held a grudge for? She even had pictures of Kurt and Blaine to remind her of her goal to make them reconcile (and then she kidnaps them with no legal consequences). I found it unnecessary to the plot and a bit ridiculous. Sue was a mean, rude, irreverent woman who got her way whenever she wanted, and in the first few seasons she pulled it off in a realistic way but then introducing plotlines like that caricatured the character by turning her into a Disney villain in a real life series.
  • Rachel's Biological Mother: I'll just say that it was very "convenient" that the Vocal Adrenaline teacher turned out to be Rachel Berry's biological mother, a situation that looks like something out of a Univision soap opera.

Esto no es algo que me moleste mucho pero igual vale la pena mencionarlo: La porrista popular y mala que es novia del jugador de fútbol, los populares de la escuela son malos y lo único que les importa es su popularidad y humillar a los demás, el grupo de marginados que resulta vencedor. Me pregunto en donde más habré visto tramas como esas...mmmm ¡Ah si! EN TODAS Y CADA UNA DE LAS PRODUCCIONES PARA ADOLESCENTES. Esto la verdad se convierte en un problema puesto que en la vida real las personas somos mucho más complejas que esto y continúan vendiéndonos estos estereotipos clichés que no pueden ser más falsos.

Una producción que rompe muy bien con estos estereotipos es Mean Girls donde a las chicas populares se les da un buen desarrollo de personaje e incluso nos muestra que en la adolescencia no existen héroes y villanos, sino que todos tenemos virtudes y defectos.

This isn't something that bothers me much but it's still worth mentioning: The popular and mean cheerleader who is the girlfriend of the soccer player, the popular guys at school who are mean and all they care about is their popularity and humiliating the others, the group of outcasts who come out on top. I wonder where else I've seen plots like that...mmmm Ah yes! IN EVERY SINGLE TEEN PRODUCTION. This actually becomes a problem since in real life people are much more complex than this and they continue to sell us these cliché stereotypes that couldn't be more false.

One production that breaks these stereotypes very well is Mean Girls where the popular girls are given good character development and even shows us that in adolescence there are no heroes and villains, but that we all have virtues and flaws.

FORCED PLOT


Con las series para adolescentes sucede algo: Tienes que saber cuando terminarlas o pierden el sentido. Lo más acertado hubiese sido que Glee terminara en el momento en el que los chicos se graduaran del instituto habiéndoles dado ya un campeonato nacional. Sin embargo, esto no sucedió y se vieron obligados a meter nuevos personajes a la serie al mismo tiempo que llevaban dos tramas (la vida de los recién graduados y la continuidad del Club Glee) y al final la trama resulta ser un poco forzada.

Si yo hubiese sido parte del equipo de producción de Glee, hubiera hecho lo siguiente: Darle fin a la serie en el momento en el que los chicos se graduaran y hacer una nueva serie llamada "After Glee" que se hubiese enfocado en la vida de los chicos después del instituto e incluso los hubiese hecho vivir cerca dándole un poco más de sentido sin perder el realismo.

One thing happens with teen series: You have to know when to end them or they lose their meaning. The best thing would have been for Glee to end at the moment when the kids graduated from high school having already given them a national championship. However, this didn't happen and they were forced to bring new characters into the series while carrying two plots (the life of the recent graduates and the continuity of the Glee Club) and in the end the plot turns out to be a bit forced.

If I had been part of the Glee production team, I would have done the following: End the series the moment the kids graduated and make a new series called "After Glee" that would have focused on the kids' life after high school and even had them live nearby giving it a little more meaning without losing the realism.

WORST ENDING EVER


La serie tuvo un final extremadamente "Candy Candy", poco realista y muy forzado en el que la secundaria McKinley se convierte en una escuela de artes escénicas y unos años después vemos a Rachel ganando un premio Tony al mismo tiempo que todos los chicos del club (como si no tuvieran una vida) se reúnen para ver la ceremonia (incluso los nuevos que no eran sus amigos).

En fin, demasiado predecible, demasiado rosa, demasiado forzado.

The series had an extremely "Candy Candy" ending, unrealistic and very forced in which McKinley High becomes a performing arts school and a few years later we see Rachel winning a Tony Award at the same time that all the kids in the club (as if they didn't have a life) gather to watch the ceremony (even the new ones who weren't her friends).

Anyway, too predictable, too rosy, too forced.

Pero bueno, a pesar de todas las críticas que le hago a esta serie, la sigo considerando como una de mis favoritas y definitivamente creo que todo el mundo debería verla.

Creo que no hay nada mejor que criticar o reseñar las cosas que te gustan pues eso aumenta tu ojo crítico como consumidor.

But hey, despite all my criticisms of this series, I still consider it one of my favorites and I definitely think everyone should watch it.

I think there's nothing better than criticizing or reviewing things you like because it increases your critical eye as a consumer.

Ori, que bueno que apareciste nuevamente por aquí jiji. Bueno yo no he sido fanática de Glee, pero si me gustan los covers y las presentaciones, las he ido viendo pro Facebook, pero como no la entiendo del todo, voy a tener que ver la serie.
Si recuerdo lo que mencionas, porque veía las propagandas y todo eso. Y tienes razón, debieron haber hecho un spin off de los chicos después de Glee, porque no tenía sentido lo que vi ni en las presentaciones 😅😅😅 se graduaron, pero siguen yendo a la secundaria y ¿Cómo hacen con la universidad?
