Missing - Film Review [ES - EN]

Si hay algo en el mundo del cine que siempre debe ser tomado en cuenta, es el poder de una simple producción convertirse en una franquicia; numerosas películas que originalmente se crean para relatar una sola historia, dependiendo de la aceptación del público, entre opinión y taquilla, pueden hacer que se aproveche de la fama (por así decirlo) y explotar el potencial de una historia buscando repetir aciertos que tuvo la anterior producción; algunas veces esa idea no funciona para nada bien aunque eso no evite que está sea una práctica que seguramente nunca tendrá fin.

If there is something in the world of movies that should always be taken into account, it is the power of a simple production to become a franchise; numerous films that are originally created to tell a single story, depending on the acceptance of the public, between opinion and box office, can take advantage of the fame (so to speak) and exploit the potential of a story seeking to repeat the successes of the previous production; sometimes that idea does not work well at all, although that does not prevent it from being a practice that will surely never end.

En el 2018 se estrenó "Searching" un thriller de suspenso que relata la historia de un padre que debe buscar a su hija de 16 años que se encuentra desaparecida y para eso debe usar redes sociales, página y app para poder saber el paradero de su hija; esta película fue un inesperado éxito el cual recaudo hasta 75 millones de dólares con un presupuesto de tan solo 880 mil dólares; la historia en si no debería prestarse para una secuela, pero como dije anteriormente, la posibilidad de explotar una idea siempre está latente en el mundo del cine y por eso en este año se estrenó una secuela, la cual es considerada como antológica y que recibió el nombre de "Missing"; en esta película veremos la historia de "June Allen", una joven de 18 años de edad quien en silencio sufre por la perdida de su padre a causa del cáncer; justamente en el momento de la celebración del día del padre, su madre, "Grace", decide tomar unas cortas vacaciones en Colombia junto a su nuevo novio, "Kevin", eso le da la oportunidad a June de esconder su dolor en fiestas mientras espera el regreso de su madre y cuando es momento de recogerla en el aeropuerto, ve como su madre no aparece y no contesta sus llamadas; la preocupación de June, hace que busque de cualquier manera como dar con el paradero de su madre, siendo el internet la única gran herramienta para tener conocimiento de que está sucediendo y en el momento en que ella y quienes deciden ayudarla a investigar que le sucedió a su madre, descubrirá secretos que podrán cambiar completamente su vida.

Originalmente, está era una película que no me motivaba de ver y no porque no me gustó "Searching" la cual considero un buen film tanto por el modo que fue dirigida, por la actuación de sus protagonistas y la historia en sí que es buena; el asunto es que siento que no era necesaria está producción por el hecho de que seguramente se repitiera lo ya hecho; está suposición tiene cierta verdad aunque no completa porque a pesar de existir un razonable parecido, lo importante de esta secuela es que sea igual de entretenida que la anterior y en mi opinión puedo decir que si lo fue. En esta oportunidad la dirección contó con Will Merrick y Nick Johnson quien hace su debut en dirigir un largometraje; lo genial de este film, así como sucedió con el anterior, es la perspectiva de relatar la historia desde el punto de vista tanto de un monitor de PC, de un teléfono celular o de cualquier otro dispositivo inteligente; personalmente no lo considero molesto y si algo muy habitual porque en gran parte del tiempo estamos viendo un monitor o nuestros teléfonos así que se hace fácil captar esta manera de hacer una película.

In 2018 was released "Searching" a suspense thriller that tells the story of a father who must search for his 16 year old daughter who is missing and for that he must use social networks, page and app in order to know the whereabouts of his daughter; this film was an unexpected success which raised up to 75 million dollars with a budget of only 880 thousand dollars; the story itself should not lend itself to a sequel, but as I said before, the possibility of exploiting an idea is always latent in the world of cinema and that is why this year a sequel was released, which is considered as an anthology and received the name of "Missing"; in this film we will see the story of "June Allen", an 18 year old girl who silently suffers for the loss of her father to cancer; Just at the time of the celebration of Father's Day, her mother, "Grace", decides to take a short vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, "Kevin", that gives June the opportunity to hide her pain in parties while waiting for the return of her mother and when it is time to pick her up at the airport, she sees how her mother does not appear and does not answer her calls; June's concern, makes her look for any way to find her mother's whereabouts, being the internet the only great tool to know what is happening and when she and those who decide to help her to investigate what happened to her mother, she will discover secrets that can completely change her life.

Originally, this was a film that did not motivate me to see and not because I did not like "Searching" which I consider a good film both for the way it was directed, for the performance of its protagonists and the story itself which is good; the thing is that I feel that this production was not necessary because of the fact that surely it would repeat what has already been done; this assumption has some truth although not complete because despite there is a reasonable resemblance, the important thing about this sequel is that it is as entertaining as the previous one and in my opinion I can say that it was. This time the direction was by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson**_ who makes his debut in directing a feature film; the great thing about this film, as it happened with the previous one, is the perspective of telling the story from the point of view of a PC monitor, a cell phone or any other smart device; personally I do not consider it annoying and if something very common because most of the time we are watching a monitor or our phones so it is easy to capture this way of making a movie.

La historia no es para nada original y cumple con el cliché de muchas secuelas; en esta oportunidad los guionistas Sev Ohanian y Aneesh Chaganty repiten la fórmula de la desaparición y el uso de la tecnología como herramienta para poder resolver un grave misterio; la diferencia entre esta película y la anterior estrenada hace 5 años nos enseña justamente la evolución de como una noticia puede tener un sin fin de alcance a todo un público que sepa usar diferentes tipos de páginas de internet y Apps; eso en sí es algo terrorífico por la facilidad de como se puede saber de la vida de una persona solo por el hecho de tener un correo electrónico, pero también nos da la posibilidad de encontrar a quien sea solo que debemos saber cómo y en dónde buscar.

No puedo decir que las actuaciones son lo mejor del film, pero tampoco diré que son malas; el trabajo de Storm Reid es bueno, me gustó su interpretación como "June", ya que es una chica con mucho potencial, es muy inteligente y justamente eso hará que pueda ayudar a resolver la desaparición de su madre; me parece excelente que su trabajo no es para nada exagerado y me gusta que demuestre brevemente esa transición de ser todavía una adolescente a tener la responsabilidad de un adulto; eso es clave en la historia porque deberá cambiar de actitud sobre muchas cosas para recuperar a su madre. Puedo hacer referencia al personaje de "Javier" interpretado por Joaquim de Almeida, es una buena representación de alguien dispuesto a ayudar, un verdadero héroe en momentos específicos y creo que es un personaje perfecto porque encaja muy bien en todo lo que se relata en esta historia.

The story is not original at all and complies with the cliché of many sequels; this time the screenwriters Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty repeat the formula of disappearance and the use of technology as a tool to solve a serious mystery; The difference between this film and the previous one released 5 years ago teaches us precisely the evolution of how a news can have an endless reach to an audience that knows how to use different types of internet pages and Apps; that in itself is something terrifying because of the ease of how you can know about the life of a person just by having an email, but also gives us the possibility to find whoever it is only that we must know how and where to look for.

I can't say that the performances are the best of the film, but I won't say they are bad either; the work of Storm Reid is good, I liked her performance as "June", since she is a girl with a lot of potential, she is very intelligent and precisely that will make her able to help solve her mother's disappearance; I think it is excellent that her work is not at all exaggerated and I like that she briefly shows that transition from being still a teenager to having the responsibility of an adult; that is key in the story because she will have to change her attitude about many things to get her mother back. I can make reference to the character of "Javier" played by Joaquim de Almeida, he is a good representation of someone willing to help, a real hero in specific moments and I think he is a perfect character because he fits very well in everything that is told in this story.

Al momento de ver "Searching" sentí sorpresa porque no esperaba que ese film me gustará y creo que eso sembró un poco de duda sobre lo que sería "Missing" porque pensaba que iba a ver lo que se hizo en el anterior film y a pesar de no estar lejos de mi apreciación, puedo decir que esta película es muy entretenida, el supuesto es algo que funciona muy bien y eso es debido a como se desarrolla la historia; me gusta que en esta oportunidad la protagonista sea víctima de un sin número de información que ofrece las redes sociales y eso afecte la percepción de lo que es la verdad, algo que muchas personas podrán tomar como referencia, ya que en muchos lados existe un bombardeo de diferentes cosas que pueden convertirnos en víctimas de estafas, invasión a la privacidad y de mentiras muy bien formuladas. Con todo esto, puedo decir que esta película junto a la citada "Searching", "Unfriended" y la misma "HOST" dónde todo se observa desde la perspectiva de un monitor son (en mi opinión) buenas películas, las cuales recomiendo como esta que es un buen film.

When I saw "Searching" I was surprised because I did not expect to like this film and I think that sowed a little doubt about what would be "Missing" because I thought I was going to see what was done in the previous film and although I am not far from my appreciation, I can say that this film is very entertaining, the assumption is something that works very well and that is due to how the story develops; I like that in this opportunity the protagonist is a victim of a number of information offered by social networks and that affects the perception of what the truth is, something that many people can take as a reference, since in many places there is a bombardment of different things that can make us victims of scams, invasion of privacy and very well formulated lies. With all this, I can say that this film along with the aforementioned "Searching", "Unfriended" and the same "HOST" where everything is observed from the perspective of a monitor are (in my opinion) good films, which I recommend as this is a good film.
