Masters of the Universe (1987) - Movie Review [ES - EN]

En los años 80, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" fue una de las series animadas que más me gustaba ver; la simple historia de un poderoso héroe enfrentando a su esquelético archienemigo fue suficiente para generar gran atracción, lo cual tuvo un aumento por la cantidad de juguetes que generó dicha serie y que, a pesar de tal admiración, nunca existió la pregunta de "¿Cuándo se hará una versión real de estos personajes y sus aventuras?" Y bueno, resulta que de una manera realmente inesperada sí se realizó una película basada en ese héroe y su lucha contra el mal, una película que personalmente me costó ver en su estreno y que decidí ahora hacer una revisión para en realidad entender todo fallo realizado y lo que considero que acabó con toda proyección de esa franquicia.

In the 1980s, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" was one of my favorite animated series; the simple story of a powerful hero facing off against his skeletal archenemy was enough to generate a huge following, which was further fueled by the abundance of toys the series spawned. And yet, despite all that admiration, the question “When will there be a live-action version of these characters and their adventures?” never even crossed my mind. Well, it turns out that, in a truly unexpected way, a movie based on that hero and his fight against evil was indeed made—a movie that I personally struggled to watch when it first came out and that I’ve now decided to review in order to truly understand all its flaws and what I believe ultimately destroyed any future potential for that franchise.

Master of the Universe, película estrenada en 1987, es una producción que toma de base la historia generada primeramente de la línea de juguetes que dio origen a la franquicia en vez de usar la historia de la serie animada que generó una gran cantidad de fans en todo el mundo. En esta película, el planeta "Eternia" está a la merced del terrorífico villano, "Skeletor" quien de manera sorpresiva pudo entrar en el poderoso Castillo de Grayskull, capturando a "Sorceress" la protectora del castillo; a pesar de tan vil acción, Skeletor todavía no se puede proclamar como el Amo del Universo, ya que falta un paso más para obtener el poder absoluto y ese está en manos de "He-Man" quien con sus amigos lidera una rebelión contra su gran enemigo. En esa batalla, He-Man deberá huir hacia otro mundo para poder retomar fuerzas y así regresar para tener una batalla final y salvar a todo su planeta.

Master of the Universe, a film released in 1987, is a production based on the story originally developed for the toy line that gave rise to the franchise, rather than on the story of the animated series that garnered a large following around the world. In this film, the planet “Eternia” is at the mercy of the terrifying villain “Skeletor,” who surprisingly managed to break into the mighty Castle Grayskull, capturing “Sorceress,” the castle’s protector; despite this vile act, Skeletor still cannot proclaim himself Master of the Universe, as one more step is needed to obtain absolute power—and that lies in the hands of “He-Man,” who, along with his friends, leads a rebellion against his great enemy. In that battle, He-Man must flee to another world to regain his strength so he can return for a final battle and save his entire planet.

La sinopsis de ese film es un completo desastre, así como todo el guion, que es un sin parar en justificar toda acción que deben realizar los personajes para derrotar al villano y salvar el día; la inconsistencia en la historia afecta completamente todo desarrollo, lo cual genera lo que considero un extenso y horrible segundo acto que, posiblemente por falta de presupuesto y de creación de ciertos escenarios, se decidió llevar a esa historia a la Tierra en vez de seguir el relato en Eternia, y más cuando se basa en el origen utilizado en la venta de la línea de juguetes, en donde He-Man justamente no tiene ninguna relación con la realeza de Eternia y, por supuesto, la Tierra; no hay ninguna justificación alguna para ninguno de los eventos que ocurren tanto en el segundo acto como el final, que también lo considero ser muy malo por lo anticlimático.

The synopsis of that film is a complete disaster, as is the entire script, which is a nonstop attempt to justify every action the characters must take to defeat the villain and save the day; the inconsistencies in the story completely undermine the entire plot development, resulting in what I consider to be a long and dreadful second act—which, possibly due to a lack of budget and the inability to create certain sets, led to the decision to move the story to Earth instead of continuing the narrative on Eternia—especially since it’s based on the origin story used to market the toy line, in which He-Man has absolutely no connection to the royal family of Eternia or, of course, Earth; there is absolutely no justification whatsoever for any of the events that occur in either the second act or the ending, which I also consider to be very poor because of how anticlimactic it is.

Tengo entendido que los productores de este film querían que fuese el "Star Wars de los 80" y esto es más que notorio por la vestimenta y alguno que otro artefacto que usa Skeletor, así como la imagen de los soldados secuaces del villano; posiblemente también es esa breve imagen de Eternia que la demuestra como un lugar rocoso y algo desértico, así como las constantes batallas con armas láseres, pero creo que lo verdaderamente parecido entre esta película y alguna de Star Wars está relacionado con la batalla final y el destino de Skeletor; es una descarada copia. Una película que debe tener un pleno de secuencias de acción y no me refiero tanto a la cantidad, sino a la calidad, también es uno de los puntos negativos del film, ya que en esta producción existen muchas escenas de acción y absolutamente todas son extremadamente malas; las coreografías de peleas son lentas, aburridas, se nota que los actores participantes no ensayaron y, en una historia donde el protagonista porta una espada de poder y no es su arma principal, entonces es claro que existe un grave problema.

I understand that the producers of this film wanted it to be the “Star Wars of the ’80s,” and this is more than evident in Skeletor’s attire and the occasional gadget he uses, as well as the appearance of the villain’s minion soldiers; it’s also possibly that brief glimpse of Eternia, which depicts it as a rocky, somewhat desert-like place, as well as the constant battles with laser weapons, but I think the real similarity between this movie and any of the Star Wars films lies in the final battle and Skeletor’s fate; it’s a blatant rip-off. A movie that should be packed with action sequences—and I’m not referring so much to quantity as to quality—is also one of the film’s weak points, since this production features many action scenes and absolutely all of them are extremely poor; the fight choreography is slow and boring; it’s obvious the actors didn’t rehearse, and in a story where the protagonist wields a sword of power—and it isn’t even his primary weapon—it’s clear there’s a serious problem.

Master of the Universe de 1987 es una de las peores películas en la historia del cine; es un despropósito total; el guion es un descontrol de horribles decisiones y las actuaciones son igual de malas. Imagínese que quien debe ser el protagonista, líder de la historia, sea el héroe más simple, aburrido y peor interpretado que existe en el mundo del entretenimiento, y puedo señalar que su contraparte, me refiero a Skeletor interpretado por Frank Langella, fue el único actor que intentó dar algún sentido a los diálogos que realizó, pero el diseño de su personaje, al igual que los demás, demuestra lo errado en la producción, ya que nunca prestaron atención a hacer una historia fidedigna al material original y no me refiero a la serie animada (lo cual considero un gravísimo error), sino al origen de la línea de juguetes; en mi opinión, esa película acabó con lo que fue una gran franquicia.

The 1987 film Master of the Universe is one of the worst movies in the history of cinema; it’s complete nonsense; the script is a mess of terrible decisions, and the performances are just as bad. Imagine that the supposed protagonist—the story’s leader—is the most one-dimensional, boring, and poorly portrayed hero in the world of entertainment. I should point out that his counterpart—I’m referring to Skeletor, played by Frank Langella—was the only actor who tried to make any sense of his lines, but his character design, like the others’, shows just how flawed the production was, since they never bothered to create a story faithful to the original source material—and I’m not referring to the animated series (which I consider a grave mistake), but to the origin of the toy line; in my opinion, that movie destroyed what used to be a great franchise.
