La película nos muestra a Christine McPherson (o Lady Bird como ella misma se hace llamar) una adolescente de 17 años, ella vive con sus padres pero no tiene una relación muy sana que digamos, también vive con su hermano y la novia de su hermano. Lady bird cursa el último año en una escuela secundaria católica, pero entre su casa y su escuela ella se siente agobiada y solo quiere ser "libre" tal como ella es.
