Unorthodox is a mini-series that calls for freedom of expression, decision-making and having a life away from dogma.

The series is based on an autobiographical novel written by Deborah Feldman and tells us about the escape of a 19-year-old girl from an ultra-Orthodox community located in Brooklyn, New York. It is not a series of complete adversity but rather a call for freedom that is not frequent in this type of community.

Etsy Saphiro (the protagonist) is a girl who grew up in this community and had an arranged marriage, something common in Middle Eastern and Indian societies. Things do not go as expected because when he gets married, he realizes that he has a condition that almost prevents him from having sex, not without first having a lot of pain. One of the main commandments in the Jewish Orthodox communities is to leave a descendant and her husband, seeing that they could not conclude that commandment, decides under pressure from his mother to ask this girl for a divorce.

La serie está basada en una novela autobiográfica escrita por Deborah Feldman y nos cuenta la huida de una chica de 19 años de una comunidad ultraortodoxa ubicada en Brooklyn, Nueva York. No es una serie de completa adversidad sino más bien un llamamiento a la libertad que en este tipo de comunidades no es frecuente.

Etsy Saphiro (la protagonista) es una chica que creció en esta comunidad y tuvo un matrimonio arreglado, algo frecuente en sociedades de medio oriente y la India. Las cosas no salen como esperaba ya que al casarse se da cuenta que tiene una condición que casi le impide tener relaciones sexuales no sin antes tener mucho dolor. Uno de los mandamientos principales en las comunidades ortodoxas judías es de dejar una descendencia y su esposo al ver que no podían concluir ese mandamiento decide bajo presión de su madre pedirle el divorcio a esta chica.

Saphiro decides to flee to Germany with the help of a piano teacher that she had secretly. Upon arriving in that country, he has a culture shock to realize the great differences between these two societies and ironically in Germany where the largest extermination of Jews of all time was carried out. The series takes advantage of this fact by giving us constant nods to the Holocaust in a provocative way.

Etsy's challenge begins when she realizes that she is really pregnant and begins the search for a place to belong not only in space but on a spiritual level and the latter is music. He meets some boys who belong to a symphony orchestra and begins to maintain a close relationship with them.

Saphiro decide huir a Alemania con la ayuda de una profesora de piano que ella tenía a escondidas. Al llegar a dicho país tiene un shock cultural al darse cuenta de las grandes diferencias entre estas dos sociedades e irónicamente en Alemania donde se hizo el más grande exterminio de judíos de todos los tiempos. La serie toma ventaja de este hecho lanzándonos constantes guiños al holocausto de manera provocadora.

El desafío de Etsy empieza cuando se da cuenta que realmente está embarazada y empieza la búsqueda de un lugar al que pertenecer no solo en espacio sino a nivel espiritual y este último es la música. Encuentra a unos chicos que pertenecen a una orquesta sinfónica y empieza a mantener una estrecha relación con ellos.

On the other hand, her family is looking for her and not with good intentions so they decide to hire a rebellious Jew to accompany her husband on a trip in Berlin.

The drama is well structured, nothing less, a moving true story that leaves us a lesson as humanity. Freedom is something that is a universal right and that many societies try to repress either with a religious or political plea. The dogma implanted in these types of communities is strong because it is religious in nature, according to these communities there is nothing beyond religious law, blind faith without any possibility of critical thought or introspection.

Por otro lado, su familia anda en búsqueda de ella y no con buenas intenciones así que deciden contratar a un judío rebelde para que acompañe a su esposo en una travesía en Berlín.

El drama está bien estructurado, sin más ni menos, una historia real conmovedora que nos deja una lección como humanidad. La libertad es algo que es un derecho universal y que muchas sociedades intentan reprimir bien sea con un alegato religioso o político. El dogma implantado en este tipo de comunidades es fuerte porque es de carácter religioso, según estas comunidades no hay nada más allá de la ley religiosa, una fe ciega sin ninguna posibilidad de pensamiento crítico o introspección.

Freedom is dangerous to the oppressor and independence and exploration a crime. Thinking beyond a doctrine is a sin and that is precisely what this series shows us and the vicissitudes that this girl manages to overcome when her integrity and her way of being are threatened.

The flight is a pretext not only for freedom but to really live. The constant prohibitions and a failed marriage push this girl on the run for her life because her spirit is being threatened.

It is very easy to empathize with this girl when seeing her suffering but especially her frustration. The fact of not being able to do what we really want kills our being, making us live for a living or for purposes that are not ours. Many people cannot choose what to be due to this oppression and it is unfortunate that in the 21st century this continues to happen.

La libertad es peligrosa para el opresor y la independencia y la exploración un delito. El pensar más allá de una doctrina un pecado y eso es precisamente lo que nos muestra esta serie y de las peripecias que esta chica logra superar al verse amenazada su integridad y su forma de ser.

La huida es un pretexto no solo por la libertad sino para realmente vivir. Las constantes prohibiciones y un matrimonio fracasado empujan a esta chica a una huida por su vida, porque está siendo amenazado su espíritu.

Es muy fácil tener empatía con esta chica al ver su sufrimiento pero sobre todo su frustración. El hecho de no poder hacer lo que realmente queremos mata nuestro ser, haciendo que vivamos por vivir o por propósitos que no son los nuestros. Muchas personas no pueden elegir que ser debido a esta opresión y es lamentable que en el siglo XXI esto siga sucediendo.

We must sooner or later overcome all these barriers that prevent us from growing as a species, freedom cannot be a luxury but an intrinsic right. Respect for this type of people who flee from oppression despite the consequences that there may be, for loving freedom, for wanting to choose a life. Nobody can forbid us to live as we please, to do what we really want because that is what makes us form an identity. Our dreams and goals can never be demolished if we are strong enough to get away from any kind of prison, even when that prison involves where we were born and with whom we grew up.

This is definitely a series to reflect on. It consists of 4 chapters with a strong emotional charge that I doubt will disappoint you. Another great recommendation that I can give and I hope you like it, if you already saw it feel free to leave me a comment.

Debemos tarde o temprano superar todas estas barreras que nos impiden crecer como especie, la libertad no puede ser un lujo sino un derecho intrínseco. Respeto a este tipo de personas que huyen de la opresión a pesar de las consecuencias que puede haber, por amar la libertad, por querer elegir una vida. Nadie puede prohibirnos vivir como nos plazca, hacer lo que realmente deseamos porque es lo que nos hace formarnos una identidad. Nuestros sueños y metas jamás podrán ser derribados si somos lo suficientemente fuertes para alejarnos de cualquier tipo de prisión, incluso cuando esa prisión involucra en donde nacimos y con quien crecimos.

Esta es en definitiva una serie para reflexionar. Consta de 4 capítulos con una fuerte carga emocional que dudo que los decepcionara. Otra gran recomendación que puedo dar y espero que sea de su agrado, si ya la viste siéntete libre de dejarme un comentario.
