Everyone who knows me knows that I am a compulsive consumer of anything Rupaul Charles produces or does in the entertainment industry whether it be music, film or television. He is one of my biggest idols and after so much thought I finally got to see the story of AJ and the Queen.
AJ and The Queen is a memorable story released in January 2020 by the streaming service Netflix produced and written by Rupaul and Michael Patrick King. The story is about a man named Robert who has all his life working as a Drag Queen whose stage name is "Ruby Red" (Rupaul) which is swindled by her gorgeous boyfriend Hector Ramirez (Josh Segarra) who takes the savings with which Ruby intended to fulfill the great dream of his life: Buy your own club. Because of this Robert will have to travel around the country performing in different night shows in a van. But he realizes that he is not alone, hidden in there is Amber Jasmine Douglas AJ (Izzy G.) the daughter of a drug addict prostitute Brianna Douglas (Katerina Tannenbaum) who lives in the same building as Robert. As if that were not enough, her ex-boyfriend begins to chase him to kill him along with the great villain of the series Leilani (Tia Carrere).
Together they will live a fun story of action, comedy and drama where the road to each destination will become another character in which we discover the lives of other people at each stop they make. At first AJ is hostile to Robert but little by little they will connect until they create a special relationship. Ruby's funny friend Louis Bell (Michael-Leon Wooley) will also make you laugh out loud with his boyfriend Pactrick (Matthew Wilkas).

Todos los que me conocen saben que soy un consumidor compulsivo de todo lo que Rupaul Charles produzca o haga en la industria del entretenimiento ya sea música, cine o televisión. Él es uno de mis más grandes ídolos y después de tanto pensarlo por fin pude ver la historia de AJ and the Queen.
AJ and The Queen es una historia memorable lanzada en Enero de 2020 por el servicio de streaming Netflix producida y escrita por Rupaul y Michael Patrick King. La historia trata de un hombre llamado Robert quien tiene toda su vida trabajando como Drag Queen cuyo nombre artístico es "Ruby Red” (Rupaul) la cual es estafada por su guapísimo novio Héctor Ramírez (Josh Segarra) que se lleva los ahorros con los que Ruby pretendía cumplir el gran sueño de su vida: Comprar su propio club. Debido a esto Robert tendrá que viajar por todo el país presentándose en distintos shows nocturnos en una furgoneta. Pero se da cuenta que no está solo, allí dentro escondida esta Amber Jasmine Douglas AJ (Izzy G.) la hija de una prostituta drogadicta Brianna Douglas (Katerina Tannenbaum) que vive en el mismo edificio que Robert. Por si fuera poco su ex novio comienza a perseguirlo para matarlo junto a la gran villana de la serie Leilani (Tia Carrere).
Juntos vivirán una historia divertida de acción, comedia y drama en donde el camino a cada destino se convertirá en otro personaje en el que vamos descubriendo la vida de otras personas en cada parada que realizan. Al principio AJ es hostil con Robert pero poco a poco irán conectándose hasta crear una relación especial. Ademas Louis Bell (Michael‑Leon Wooley) el divertido amigo de Ruby también te hara reír hasta mas no poder con su novio Pactrick (Matthew Wilkas).
As a fan of Rupaul's reality show I was fascinated to see the cameo that many Drag Queens made in the series names like Jinkx Monsoon, Bianca del Rio, Trinity the Tuck, Latrice Royals, Jujubee, Jade Joly, Chad Michaels, Valentina, Monique Heart, Alexis Mateo, Katya among others. Plus I like the way Rupaul's performance a legend in the Drag world is over the top and especially human.
But the performance that stole my heart was that of Izzy G. with the character of AJ at the beginning we think he is a child but in reality he is the character that has more evolution. It is impossible not to empathize with the story of this girl and the message I think they wanted to convey with this project was inclusion and how we should not judge others by their physique. Another element that I want to highlight is the soundtrack of this series which is a fascinating ingredient in this story with titles like "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor or "My Endless Love" by the legend Diana Ross.
Como fan del reality de Rupaul me fascinó ver el cameo que muchas Drag Queens hicieron en la serie nombres como Jinkx Monsoon, Bianca del Rios, Trinity the Tuck, Latrice Royals, Jujubee, Jade Joly, Chad Michaels, Valentina, Monique Heart, Alexis Mateo, Katya entre otras. Además me gusta la forma de actuar de Rupaul, una leyenda en el mundo Drag es exagerado y especialmente humano.
Pero la actuación que se robó mi corazón fue la de Izzy G. con el personaje de AJ al principio creemos que es un niño pero en realidad es el personaje que más evolución tiene. Es imposible no sentir empatía con la historia de esta niña y es que el mensaje que creo querían transmitir con este proyecto fue la inclusión y como no debemos juzgar a los demás por el físico. Otro elemento que quiero resaltar es la banda sonora de esta serie la cual es un ingrediente fascinante en esta historia con títulos como “I Will Survive” de Gloria Gaynor o “My Endless Love” de la leyenda Diana Ross.
Unfortunately Netflix decided not to renew the series for a second season something that of course did not surprise me, Rupaul announced it through a tweet in which he expressed: "End of the road for “AJ and The Queen” @Netflix has decided to not extend our road trip across America. Thank you for all the love & support. We're so very proud of the work. ". The series was cancelled among other things because of the low receptivity it had, not that this series is worthy of a Golden Globe either but it is full of beautiful moments that make it very special. Tender is an apt adjective when describing this series despite its staunchest critics branding it as nefarious but I don't much care. As a fan of Rupaul's Drag Race I'm interested in everything these entertainment geniuses do.
So if you are one of those people who love pop culture, sequins and musical numbers you can't miss this series in which every episode there is a lip sync. I recommend it, you will fall in love with every minute of it and you will be left with a smile on your face at the end of each episode. I loved it!
Lamentablemente Netflix decidió no renovar la serie para una segunda temporada algo que por supuesto no me sorprendió, Rupaul lo anuncio a través de un tweet en el que expresaba: “Fin del camino para "AJ and The Queen" @Netflix ha decidido no prolongar nuestro viaje por carretera a través de América. Gracias por todo el amor y el apoyo. Estamos muy orgullosos del trabajo”.. La serie fue cancelada entre otras cosas por la baja receptividad que tuvo, tampoco es que esta serie sea digna de un Golden Globe pero está llena de momentos hermosos que la hacen muy especial. Tierna es un adjetivo acertado a la hora de describir esta serie a pesar de que sus críticos más acérrimos la tachan como nefasta pero no me importa mucho. Como fan de Rupaul’s Drag Race me interesan todo lo que hagan estos genios del entretenimiento.
Así que si tú eres una de esas personas amante de la cultura Pop, las lentejuelas y los números musicales no te puedes perder esta serie en el que cada episodio hay una sincronización de labios. Te la recomiendo te vas a enamorar en cada minuto que pase y te quedaras con una sonrisa en la cara al final de cada episodio. ¡A mí me encanto!
A pesar de que se está logrando sentir la inclusión y su lucha, todavía hay mucho tabú al respecto y eso opaca muchos avances que se han hecho. A mi pensar, aún la gente tiene una mentalidad y una forma de razonar muy cerrada. Yo incluida algunas veces porque hay cosas que quizás no entiendo pero que sin embargo respeto, no puedo caer en argumentos ilógicos producto de mi ignorancia peeeero... no todos pensamos así 🙃
