Saludos, Hivers. Honestamente, pensé que tardaría más en hablar sobre esta película. Existen muchas entre las nominadas de los Oscar de este año de las cuales quisiera hablar y comúnmente suelo dejar la película ganadora para el final. Pero tras haber visto esta película un par de veces y de haber leído bastante sobre su creación, creo que esta es una buena oportunidad para hablar de ella y no solamente sobre su contenido, sino sobre lo que hay detrás de su creación. Historias que invitan a la reflexión y que son ángulos que todos los amantes del cine y sobre todo los que deseemos volvernos creadores en dicho mundo deberíamos ver. Por ello, hoy quiero hablar sobre la ganadora a Mejor Película en los Oscar del 2021: NOMADLAND.

Greetings, Hivers. Honestly, I thought it would take longer to talk about this film. There are many among this year's Oscar nominees that I'd like to talk about and I commonly tend to save the winning film for last. But having seen this film a couple of times and having read quite a bit about its creation, I think this is a good opportunity to talk about it and not just about its content, but about what is behind its creation. Stories that are thought-provoking and are angles that all film lovers and especially those of us who wish to become creators in that world should see. So today I want to talk about the winner for Best Picture at the 2021 Oscars: NOMADLAND.

Nomadland es una película dirigida por Chloé Zhao, una directora, productora y guionista china. Chloe es la segunda mujer en recibir el premio a "Mejor Película" en la historia de los Premios de la Academia (Oscar). Nomadland fue distribuida mediante Searchlight Pictures, la cual pertenece a Walt Disney Studios. Como es común en las películas recientes, su estreno fue constantemente aplazado, originalmente fue estrenada el 11 de septiembre de 2020 en diversos festivales, destacando el Festival Internacional de Cine de Venecia y el Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto. Nomadland se convirtió en la primera película en ganar simultáneamente el León de Oro (premio de mejor película del festival de Venecia) y el Premio del Público (del Festival de Cine de Toronto).

La película está protagonizada por la actriz veterana Frances McDormand, la cual no decepciona en lo absoluto con su interpretación. La película está adaptada del libro "Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century", escrito por Jessica Bruder. Este filme, además, cuenta con una banda sonora compuesta por Ludovico Einaudi.

Nomadland is a film directed by Chloé Zhao, a Chinese director, producer and screenwriter. Chloé is the second woman to receive the "Best Picture" award in the history of the Academy Awards (Oscar). Nomadland was distributed through Searchlight Pictures, which is owned by Walt Disney Studios. As is common in recent films, its release was constantly postponed, originally premiering on September 11, 2020 at various festivals, most notably the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Nomadland became the first film to simultaneously win the Golden Lion (Venice Film Festival's Best Film Award) and the People's Choice Award (Toronto Film Festival).

The film stars veteran actress Frances McDormand, who does not disappoint at all with her performance. The film is adapted from the book "Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century", written by Jessica Bruder. The film also features a soundtrack composed by Ludovico Einaudi.

La historia de Nomadland explora la vida de Fern (personaje encarnado por Frances McDormand), una mujer mayor en sus sesenta y tantos, la cual era residente de una localidad estadounidense llamada "Empire" en el estado de Nevada. Dicha localidad era muy pequeña y a inicios de la década del 2010, esta cayó en un estado de pobreza y abandono que eventualmente llevaría a las empresas y fábricas de dicha localidad a cerrar. Para el 2011, el código postal de dicha zona desapareció. Fern se vio obligada a abandonar su vida allí y decidió convertirse en una nómada.

En su largo viaje y su nueva forma de vida, Fern vive dentro de una van, estacionando en lugares diversos, viajando por las carreteras americanas y en un estado de precariedad económica. En el camino, conoce a muchas personas e incluso comienza a formar parte de una comunidad de nómadas. Durante su viaje, Fern se encuentra con diversas situaciones complicadas y siendo perseguida por el dolor que le dejó abandonar su pueblo y su vida con su fallecido esposo.

The story of Nomadland explores the life of Fern (played by Frances McDormand), an older woman in her sixties, who was a resident of an American town called "Empire", in the state of Nevada. The town was very small and in the early 2010s, it fell into a state of poverty and neglect that would eventually lead to the town's businesses and factories closing. By 2011, the zip code for the area disappeared. Fern was forced to abandon her life there and decided to become a nomad.

On her long journey and her new way of life, Fern lives inside a van, parking in various places, traveling the American highways and in a state of economic precariousness. Along the way, she meets many people and even begins to become part of a community of nomads. During her journey, Fern encounters various complicated situations and is haunted by the pain of leaving her hometown and her life with her deceased husband.

Aún con todo el éxito que esta película ha estado teniendo, no ha estado exenta de convertirse en una figura de gran controversia en el mundo del cine. Y para esto, hay muchos motivos. El asunto comienza partiendo de algunas escenas en las que la protagonista, Fern, tiene trabajos temporales en departamentos de Amazon. Dichas escenas presentan a Fern trabajando para el almacen de una forma relajada hasta el punto de incluso tener a una escena con Fern jugando con una malla en plena jornada, además de comentarios del personaje diciendo que es muy buena paga y también un ambiente laboral con sus compañeros bastante agradable. ¿Cuál es el problema con esto? Que Amazon ha estado envuelta en una controversia constante debido a testimonios de explotación laboral de parte de empleados de esta empresa.

Algo que resalta este problema, es que estas escenas donde Fern trabaja para Amazon son bastante breves y no son un foco importante para la trama, pero es importante entender que esto implica que la película está dando una imagen buena de la empresa. Y esto no es nada extraño, puesto que no es común ver que en obras cinematográficas se ataque a empresas y menos cuando estas son películas que intentan mantenerse en un espectro apolítico. Y de aquí parte otra controversia con Nomadland.

El libro de Jessica Bruder en el que está basada la película, es un libro que explora muchísimo más la realidad económica de la etapa retratada en la película. Fern es un personaje ficticio que no existe dentro del contenido del libro, por lo que la adaptación es más que todo de uso contextual y de escenario. Uno de los problemas por los que más fue criticada esta adaptación cinematográfica, es porque el libro contiene una carga de crítica política bastante grande, carga política que fue completamente obviada en la película. Y esto es importante, ya que Nomadland es una película cuyo contexto debería ser fuertemente político al ser una obra que habla tanto sobre la condición económica de personas mayores y ancianas marginadas a vivir en vehículos, más aún en una etapa que se sabe que fue turbia económicamente para el país y más aún cuando se habla de la desaparición y abandono de una localidad entera. En una obra donde se habla tanto del dinero y de la condición humana de las personas presentadas, es difícil mantener el aura apolítica, pero la película lo hace y esto puede ser desagradable para algunos.

Pero la polémica no termina allí, aunque lo que queda es en base a rumores. Se sabe que buena parte de lo filmado en Nomadland es auténtico, varias de las personas presentadas en la película son nómadas reales quienes tienen mucho tiempo en este estilo de vida. La película centra su atención en personajes como "Linda May" o "Charlene Swankie", quienes son nómadas reales. Sin embargo, hay rumores de que a muchos de los nómadas que aparecen en la película, se les dijo que estaban siendo grabados para un documental. En base a esto, hay habladurías acerca de que a estas personas no se les dio ninguna clase de pago por sus apariciones en esta obra. Esto, de momento, se mantiene como un rumor, sin embargo, lo demás es algo sabido y comprobado.

Even with all the success this film has been having, it has not been exempt from becoming a figure of great controversy in the world of cinema. And for this, there are many reasons. The issue starts from some scenes in which the main character, Fern, has temporary jobs in Amazon's departments. Said scenes present Fern working for the warehouse in a relaxed manner to the point of even having a scene with Fern playing with a leotard in the middle of the day, plus comments from the character saying that it is very good pay and also a work environment with her co-workers quite pleasant. What is the problem with this? Amazon has been involved in a constant controversy due to testimonies of labor exploitation by employees of this company.

Something that highlights this problem is that these scenes where Fern works for Amazon are quite brief and are not an important focus for the plot, but it is important to understand that this implies that the film is giving a good image of the company. And this is not strange at all, since it is not common to see companies being attacked in cinematographic works, and even less so when these are films that try to remain in an apolitical spectrum. And this is where another controversy with Nomadland comes from.

The book by Jessica Bruder on which the film is based is a book that explores much more of the economic reality of the period portrayed in the film. Fern is a fictional character that does not exist within the content of the book, so the adaptation is mostly for contextual use and setting. One of the problems for which this film adaptation was most criticized, is because the book contains a fairly large load of political criticism, a political load that was completely obviated in the film. And this is important, since Nomadland is a film whose context should be strongly political, since it is a work that speaks so much about the economic condition of elderly people marginalized to live in vehicles, even more so in a period that was known to be economically turbid for the country, and even more so when it speaks of the disappearance and abandonment of an entire town. In a work where there is so much talk about money and the human condition of the people presented, it is difficult to maintain the apolitical aura, but the film does so and this may be unpleasant for some.

But the controversy does not end there, although what remains is based on hearsay. It is known that much of what is filmed in Nomadland is authentic, several of the people featured in the film are real nomads who have a long time in this lifestyle. The film focuses on characters such as "Linda May" or "Charlene Swankie", who are real nomads. However, there are rumors that many of the nomads featured in the film were told that they were being filmed for a documentary. Based on this, there is talk that these people were not given any kind of payment for their appearances in this work. This, for the time being, remains a rumor, however, the rest is known and proven.

Mi forma de percibir el arte está demasiado relacionada a mis sensaciones, todo lo que me gusta, me gusta por cómo me hizo sentir. Obviamente, cosas como el contexto o de qué va una obra son factores importantes, pero no son cosas que definan si algo me va a gustar o no. Siempre eso depende de mis sensaciones con la obra, y eso no se corresponde al "qué", si no al "cómo". Por ello, en muchas ocasiones, hay obras que pueden tener una historia desagradable detrás o estar hechas por artistas cuestionables y esto es algo que no afecta mi disfrute.

Habiendo dicho esto, debo decir que para mí, Nomadland fue una película muy disfrutable. El viaje de Fern es uno con el que puedo empatizar mucho, hubo muchos momentos en la película en los que me sentí genuinamente conectado con lo que sucedía. Además, la película tiene una cinematografía muy bonita y es un retrato genial de la soledad. Gracias a estas cosas y a muchas más, Nomadland fue una película que disfruté bastante y cómo imaginarán, habiendo dicho lo de antes, la controversia no ha afectado mi disfrute.

Aunque, eso no cambia que piense ciertas cosas sobre esa polémica. Yo no tengo ninguna clase de referencia de los implicados en la controversia, nunca he visto otra película de Chloé Zhao así que desconozco sus ideales. Lo mismo con las empresas implicadas, tampoco he leído el libro original de Nomadland. Hay algo que sí considero importante respecto a dichas controversias y eso es la parte relacionada con los rumores (que espero no sean ciertos), de ser ciertos, sería algo que me haría sentir incómodo con esta película. Lo demás, francamente, puedo entenderlo y siento que es algo que no podía ser de otro modo, al menos de la forma en la que fue planteado.

Nomadland es una película que da mucho de qué hablar, ya sea por su historia o por su contexto. Puedes tener la opinión que quieras, estar o no de acuerdo con que haya ganado el Oscar a Mejor Película (yo se lo hubiese dado a Sound of Metal o a Judas And The Black Messiah), eso no quita (para mí), que haya sido una buena experiencia. My way of perceiving art is too much related to my sensations, everything I like, I like it because of how it made me feel. Obviously, things like the context or what a work is about are important factors, but they are not things that define whether I will like something or not. It always depends on my feelings with the work, and that does not correspond to the "what", but to the "how". Therefore, on many occasions, there are works that may have an unpleasant history behind them or be made by questionable artists and this is something that does not affect my enjoyment.

Having said that, I must say that for me, Nomadland was a very enjoyable film. Fern's journey is one that I can empathize with a lot, there were many moments in the film where I felt genuinely connected to what was going on. Also, the film has beautiful cinematography and is a great portrayal of loneliness. Thanks to these things and many more, Nomadland was a film I enjoyed quite a bit and how you would imagine, having said the above, the controversy has not affected my enjoyment.

Although, that doesn't change that I think certain things about that controversy. I don't have any kind of reference for those involved in the controversy, I've never seen another Chloé Zhao film so I don't know their ideals. Same with the companies involved, I have not read the original Nomadland book either. There is one thing I do consider important regarding said controversies and that is the part related to the rumors (which I hope are not true), if true, it would be something that would make me uncomfortable with this film. The rest, frankly, I can understand and I feel it's something that couldn't be otherwise, at least the way it was approached.

Nomadland is a film that gives a lot to talk about, either because of its story or its context. You can have whatever opinion you want, agree or disagree with it winning the Oscar for Best Picture (I would have given it to Sound of Metal or Judas And The Black Messiah), that does not change the fact (for me), that it was a good experience.
