Hay veces que nos provoca sentir la adrenalina al ver una película de terror o suspenso, pero nos aguantamos las ganas porque nos da miedo o no sabemos la magnitud del terror que puede contener una película, también sabemos que no las podemos ver junto a los más pequeños. Es por eso que estoy aquí, para recomendar una película de terror que es fácil de digerir y está basada en un libro de cuentos infantiles, lo que quiere decir que los más jóvenes también la pueden disfrutar. “Scary Stories To Tell in The dark” es una película de terror estrenada en 2009, dirigida por André Øvredal, con un guión coescrito por Dan y Kevin Hageman , y una historia por Guillermo del Toro. Está basada en los libros infantiles del mismo nombre escritos por Alvin Schwartz.

There are times when we feel adrenaline when watching a horror or suspense movie, but we resist the urge because it scares us or we do not know the magnitude of the terror that a movie can contain, we also know that we cannot see them together with the most little ones. Para ser sincero, la razón que me motivó a ver esta película fue saber que Guillermo del Toro, uno de mis cineastas favoritos, estaría en la producción y en la composición de la historia, y es que contar con Guillermo para hacer una película de terror o de monstruos es una gran manera de hacer marketing, además de la publicidad que dio el afamado cineasta mexicano, también se promociona el film por el Super Bowl LIII, donde se mostraron las primeras imágenes y la película fue finalmente estrenada en agosto de 2019.

To be honest, the reason that motivated me to see this film was to know that Guillermo del Toro, one of my favorite filmmakers, would be in the production and in the composition of the story, and that is to count on Guillermo to make a horror movie or of monsters is a great way to do marketing, in addition to the publicity that the famous Mexican filmmaker gave, the film is also promoted through Super Bowl LIII, where the first images were shown and the film was finally released in August 2019.

En cuanto a la producción, es un proyecto que se venía trabajando desde el 2013, cuando CBS Films adquirió los derechos de la serie de libros “Scary Stories To Tell in The dark” para después hacer la película. 3 años después se dio a conocer que contarían con Guillermo del Toro para que desarrollara el proyecto y con Dan y Kevin Hageman para que se encargaran del guión. En 2017 se confirmó a André Øvredal como director y para setiembre de 2018 ya se tenía completo los actores que conforman al elenco principal. Ahora les relatare un poco de lo que trata la historia y la trama de la película, la cual nos muestra a un grupo de adolescentes que ha sido maldecidos por un libro que les relata cómo van a morir.

La historia nos lleva a 1968, cuando una pequeña ciudad de Pensilvania se prepara para celebrar el día de Halloween. En dicha ciudad vive Stella, una chica que escribe relatos de terror y es atormentada por la idea de que por su culpa su madre la abandonó a ella y a su padre. En la noche de halloween se junta junto a sus dos amigos Chuck y Auggie para jugarle una broma a Tommy Milner y su pandilla, ya que será la manera de vengarse de que los moleste siempre. Después de que la broma salió como lo habían planeado, los chicos huyen con temor a represalias por parte de Tommy y su pandilla, se meten en el autocine y allí conocen a Ramón, quien los oculta en su auto para que Tommy no los encontrara. Luego de conocer a su nuevo amigo, Auggie, Chuck y Stella la cual se sintió atraída a ramón, al igual que él por ella, invitan Ramón a una casa embrujada la cual perteneció a la adinerada familia Bellows que ayudó a fundar a la ciudad, de la que surgieron rumores que decían que la familia tenía encerrada a la hija menor, Sarah Bellows, debido a que esta nació deforme y les avergonzaba que la miraran. Se decía que ella solía entretener a los niños que pasaban cerca de la casa contándoles cuentos de terror a través de las paredes, pero luego, según el rumor, Sara empezó a envenenar a los niños y después se suicidó para evitar que fuera linchada por la muchedumbre enfurecida por los crímenes cometidos.

The story takes us back to 1968, when a small Pennsylvania town prepares to celebrate Halloween. Stella lives in that city, a girl who writes horror stories and is tormented by the idea that her mother abandoned her and her father because of her. On Halloween night he gets together with his two friends Chuck and Auggie to play a prank on Tommy Milner and his gang, since it will be the way to get revenge for always bothering them. After the prank went as planned, the boys flee in fear of retaliation from Tommy and his gang, they go into the drive-in and there they meet Ramón, who hides them in his car so that Tommy won't find them. After meeting his new friend, Auggie, Chuck and Stella, who was attracted to Ramón, as he was attracted to her, they invite Ramón to a haunted house which belonged to the wealthy Bellows family who helped found the city. From which rumors arose that the family had their youngest daughter, Sarah Bellows, locked up because she was born deformed and they were ashamed to be looked at. It was said that she used to entertain the children who passed near the house by telling them horror stories through the walls, but then, according to rumor, Sara started poisoning the children and later committed suicide to avoid being lynched by the crowd enraged by crimes committed.

Al llegar a la casa embrujada los chicos empiezan a explorar y se consiguen la habitación donde tenían encerrada a Sarah, allí los chicos encuentran el libro donde Sarah escribía sus historias de terror, pero Tommy llega allí y encierra deja encerrados a los chicos en esa tenebrosa habitación, entonces el grupo llenos de temor se desesperan por salir de allí y es entonces cuando Stella toma el libro y le pide a Sarah que le cuente una historia, después de esto la puerta se abre y logran escapar, además, antes de irse, Stella se lleva el libro. Cuando Stella llega a su casa, le echa un vistazo al libro y descubre que hay una historia recién escrita llamada “Harold”, la cual trata sobre un personaje llamado Tommy y narra cómo muere. Al día siguiente Tommy Milner es reportado como desaparecido, lo que lleva a los chicos a investigar y darse cuenta que han sido maldecidos por Sarah, y cada vez aparece un cuento nuevo en el libro que relata la muerte de alguno de ellos. Aquí comienza el terror, cuando los chicos entran en apuros y buscan desesperadamente la manera de detener la maldición.

Creo que a pesar de que es una película que trata de cuentos para niños, tiene bastante que ofrecer. En cuanto a lo técnico, quisiera destacar una buena la buena dirección, las escenas de terror y suspensos están bien elaboradas y ejecutadas, además cuenta con una excelente dirección de fotografía donde todo se ve estéticamente exquisito. La verdad que se puede notar la marca de Guillermo del Toro en este film, todo esto valió para que fuera bien aceptada por la crítica.

Upon reaching the haunted house the boys begin to explore and find the room where they had Sarah locked up, there the boys find the book where Sarah wrote her horror stories, but Tommy arrives there and locks up the boys in that dark room, then the group full of fear despair to get out of there and that is when Stella takes the book and asks Sarah to tell her a story, after this the door opens and they manage to escape, also, before leaving, Stella takes the book. When Stella gets home, she takes a look at the book and discovers that there is a newly written story called "Harold," which is about a character named Tommy and how he dies. The next day Tommy Milner is reported missing, which leads the boys to investigate and realize that they have been cursed by Sarah, and each time a new story appears in the book that recounts the death of one of them. Here the terror begins, when the boys get into trouble and desperately search for a way to stop the curse.

I think that even though it is a movie about children's stories, it has a lot to offer. As for the technical, I would like to highlight a good direction, the horror and suspense scenes are well prepared and executed, it also has an excellent photography direction where everything looks aesthetically exquisite. The truth is that Guillermo del Toro's brand can be noticed in this film, all this was worth to be well accepted by the critics.
