This idea of freedom is truncated by the power that is established in her country, returning to the more traditional values of Islam, which generates a conflict between her and her environment....

ideals.jpg

During her childhood, Marjí develops in a hostile environment, because her country is living through a crucial stage, in the process of a revolution that culminates with the overthrow of the Shah and the subsequent arrival of the Islamic Republic, becoming an oppressive regime, however Marjí feels special affinity for Western culture, in parallel she feels interest in political issues from what she sees in her country and from what her family tells her, which also instills in her this sense of belonging, tradition and values, thus shaping her way of seeing and thinking about the world, about what surrounds her, awakening a hope of being part of a change.

identity.jpg

During adolescence, once the Islamic republic is established, Marjí experiences a complex process of identification, which manifests itself through differentiation, as she seeks her own identity by trying not to be the same as others, expressing it through her clothing, the type of music she listens to, among other aspects.

ideales.jpg

Subsequently Marjí questions authority, as she feels a duty to be a voice among the silence, this action has an immediate effect, Marjane's parents are forced to send her to the French Lycée in Vienna to keep her away from the war and an inevitable execution due to her anti-establishment behavior.

During her stay in Vienna Marjí looks for a place where she can feel good, she interacts with different groups, she feels a certain fascination for the new, she even gets to experience loving feelings towards someone else, but she also denies where she comes from for fear of rejection. She wants to, but she cannot, she cannot understand the European being, his disinterest towards life and his lack of rootedness to his values and traditions, she cannot feel part of it.

At this point she realizes that it is not worth it to stay in Vienna, for her there are much more important things, her family, her land.

UPROOTING.jpg
Upon returning, Iran is no longer the same country, the war that lasted 8 years left indelible traces in the memory of the people who lived through it, its streets were now like cemeteries.

After a while she realizes that the people around her, subjugated by the power, are incapable of doing anything to change this. Marjí begins to take antidepressants, she enters a state of absolute disinterest, because nothing is possible for her anymore. Her father asks her to adapt, that is, to submit to power. After getting married she loses hope again because she is unhappy with her partner, again she submits to power, she feels like a prisoner in her own country, she can't stand it, if she stays any longer the next death could be hers.

The freedom she wishes to feel again has been confiscated and she feels UPROOTED from her homeland.

my conclusion.jpg

This film tries to tell us that the ideals of a free, fair and just society, attached to its traditions, can turn it into a perverse and oppressive product of a regime that the people themselves choose, in spite of wanting a change that is supposed to be good and beneficial, there is also room for error, producing a turn in people's lives, as happened to Marjí, who, as a result of these events, was plunged into a loss of her identity as a result of living under a regime that curtailed her freedom and that of her family, feeling that she did not fit in anywhere, this prompted her to leave her country and finally choose to be free, a representation of the fragile nature of freedom and the fragile of freedom and the sacrifice that is sometimes required to maintain it.

Radical Islam is one of the most perverse systems in existence, along with the communists. Both systems only seek to keep oppressed peoples under rules imposed by the powerful.

There is much autobiographical in the work of this author, it is based on her own experiences.

I like this part of your conclusions:

the ideals of a free, fair and just society, attached to its traditions, can turn it into a perverse and oppressive product of a regime that the people themselves choose

this is exactly what happened in Venezuela.

I see you are a film student. Have you made short films? if so, can they be seen online?

I saw your two short films. You have done animation, that's admirable, it takes more detailed work. In both shorts I notice the use of dreamlike images in what you want to convey. I like it, I like independent, experimental cinema.
I invite you to join the Movies & TV Shows community discord server, we have a channel for Spanish speakers. Other cinephiles want to meet in future activities to talk about cinema, it would be a pleasure to have your presence.
