A little to compensate for having recently seen a repeated movie once again, this week I went to the cinema to see something that was in theaters and I found the most recent story of Robert Eggers, Director who surprised me with The Witch and amazed me with The Lighthouse, so I decided to see it Wednesday night.

The story of The Northman takes place in Iceland, in the middle of the 10th century. Amleth, a Nordic prince (Alexander Skarsgard) seeks to avenge at all costs the death of his father, treacherously murdered at the beginning of the film, when Amleth was just a kid. Years later, after spending a thousand adventures and even after having forgotten his purpose, the now man returns to his path with three objectives: avenge his father, save his mother and kill the traitor. In an adventure that takes him out and returns him to the very end of the world, to lands of savagery, violence and brutality, Amleth will find guidance and protection from his deceased father and will also find something he was not looking for: the beauty of a woman. Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy) gradually becomes an indispensable support for Amleth in his plans for revenge.

Se trata entonces de una película de suspenso y drama histórico de corte épico, cuyo guión fue escrito por Eggers y el poeta y novelista islandés Sjón, lo cual se nota no sólo en la trama sino en la musicalidad de ciertas frases pronunciadas por los personajes intepretados por Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, Ralph Ineson, Ethan Hawke y Willem Dafoe, entre otros.

In addition to the luxury cast and the good script (with obvious echoes of Shakespeare and imbued with Norse mythology), the film has an appropriate soundtrack and very good photography in which we can appreciate paradisiacal and infernal landscapes, forests, volcanoes, rivers , ice, snow... the land of the Middle Ages is shown on the screen in all its brutality and beauty. If we add to that the good performances, the battle and carnage scenes and the almost archetypal structure of Campbell's hero's journey present in the film, The Northman has all the ingredients to be a great film, a memorable epic movie. However, it is not. Let's see, yes, it's a good movie and meets what is required of this type of story, but it doesn't stand out, it doesn't stand out significantly from others, which, in the case of Eggers, can be considered a "failure".

Además del reparto de lujo y el buen guión (con evidentes ecos de Shakespeare e imbuido de mitología nórdica), la película cuenta con una banda sonora apropiada y una muy buena fotografía en la que podemos apreciar paisajes paradisíacos e infernales, bosques, volcanes, ríos, hielo, nieve... la tierra de la Edad Media es mostrada en la pantalla en toda su brutalidad y belleza. Si a eso sumamos las buenas actuaciones, las escenas de batalla y carnicería y la estructura casi arquetípica del viaje del héroe de Campbell presente en la película, The Northman cuenta con todos los ingredientes para ser una gran cinta, una memorable película épica. Sin embargo, no lo es. A ver, sí, es una buena película y cumple con lo que se le pide a este tipo de historias, pero no sobresale, no destaca significativamente sobre otras, lo que, tratándose de Eggers, puede ser consiferado un "fracaso".

In my opinion, the reason why the film is not as compelling or memorable is due to one thing from which others are derived: the target. The Witch and The Lighthouse are somewhat cryptic and aesthetically wonderful films. In them, art wins the game over showbizz, Eggers did not seem to care so much that his films were understood as that they were good stories and that they had great artistic quality. Their budgets were modest and the weight of the story had to be centered on the script. But The Nothman is a blockbuster (its budget is more than ten times that of his previous two films combined) and as such targets a larger audience with a more conventional structure and aesthetic. It's not just another movie, at all. It's a good epic movie, but it didn't surprise me, it didn't amaze me, it didn't move me, I couldn't connect with the story on an emotional level either, it didn't have the impact of its first two movies and it seemed to me the same old story, a kind of Viking Shakespeare, who else has seen The Northman? En mi opinión, la razón por la que la película no resulta tan absorbente o memorable se debe a una cosa de la cual se derivan otras: el target. The Witch y The Lighthouse son cintas un tanto crípticas y estéticamente maravillosas. En ellas, el arte le gana la partida al showbizz, a Eggers no parecía importarle tanto que se entendieran sus películas como que fueran buenas historias y que tuvieran una gran calidad artística. Sus presupuestos eran modestos y el peso de la historia debía centrarse en el guión. Pero The Nothman es una superproducción (su presupuesto es más de diez veces mayor al de sus dos previos films combinados) y como tal apunta a un público más amplio con una estructura y una estética más convencional. No es una película más de montón, en lo absoluto. Es una buena película épica, pero no me sorprendió, no me maravilló, no me emocionó, no logré conectar con la historia a nivel emocional tampoco, no tuvo en mí el impacto de sus primeras dos películas y me pareció la misma historia de siemore, una especie de Shakespeare Vikingo, ¿quién más ha visto The Northman?
