Anime for the uninitiated. Help me out.

I had a jolt of inspiration reading about the film Paprika (2006) from @notacinephile.

My anime knowledge is very low. I've seen several of the big hitters like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, I'm sure I've seen more I simply can't remember.

My limited knowledge of the genre seems to encompass futuristic, dystopian viewpoints that resemble Blade Runner in animation form. While I love this setting there must be more than this and I know there is. I'm sure I'm not the only one who equates talking anthropomorphic animals with the genre.

What would you recommend that would be a good introduction or refresher to the genre? I know the genre is vast, I'm not sure where to look.

I'm paging through my movie database with the tag animation and I'm seeing I have several films I didn't even know I owned. Perhaps I should start there?

Perfect Blue
Spirited Away
Steamboy
Grave of the Fireflies

I'm finally posting in the movie and tv shows community. I'm a little slow but I'll make it there eventually :)

I wish I could help, BB... but, alas, I cannot. lol
It really would be good too because my daughter is really getting into it. I recently introduced her to Sailor Moon... she was bugging me about anime from when I was a kid. I actually watched SPIRITED AWAY years ago, and it was a beautiful film. A bit strange, but that's kind of the anime thing... isn't it? :)

Anime is a hard one especially for the different demographics. I haven't watched Spirited Away yet but I'll move that up in my queue. I know of it and have seen pictures I'm sure as I think it's one of the more popular ones. Thanks for chiming in even if you're not sure. You helped me out

Hello @buffalobison, I don't watch much Anime these days but I ran into the RWBY movies for free on BoobTube First 5 volumes are free with ads( if you don't use ad block 🙂) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=rwby
Also recently watched the Arpeggio of Blue Steel series and the Robotech Shadow Chronicles movie.( Robotech is on BoobTube free as well)

I looked up that RWBY you mentioned and it's by Rooster Teeth. That's pretty neat as I watched their Red vs Blue series in the past. Thanks for the suggestions and the links; more for my list :)

I forget how much content is simply floating out there on youtube.

I'm not sure if you're looking for a specific anime genre, or if you're referring to anime as whole as a genre. I can't help if you're aiming for a dystopian genre anime, as I don't have something to recommend on top of my head.

If you're looking for any good anime, I recommend watching anime movies from different eras before going into a series. Grave of Fireflies is a good movie and it's listed in your post. It's much more depressing than the usual anime though. Anything from Studio Ghibli works.

Another good movie is A Silent Voice, which is a recent one. I wrote about it "a great entry point to anime" in my Hive post.

As for series, In recommend:

  • Psycho Pass is a dystopian anime that you might love. "In the future, people are judged by a system and criminals are captured before they commit their crimes." It's so perfect it becomes depressing when you think about it.
  • ONE PIECE if you can handle a long series, it's the 2nd best selling comic of all time for a good reason. Totally worth it!
  • Attack on Titan offers many philosophical questions, if you want to watch this I recommend sticking until the 5th episode to make judgment about it.
  • ...Don't have time to come up with more now, might go back to this later.

I know this is old, but I think my answer is different than the others. Just found your blog via D.Buzz.

Oh wow, thank you so much for posting something like this and the time it took. This is exactly what I was hoping for on that initial posting.

The Attack on Titan does sound familiar and I've not heard of the others. I will need to check these other titles out that you mentioned.

As for the age of the post, I noticed that too. Most people I find don't really want to respond to older posts for some reason. I don't get it, thanks again!
