Contracorriente: cuerpo y muerte

Latinoamérica… el nuevo mundo donde abundan las viejas costumbres, donde hacer algo diferente a lo que la sociedad impone, puede resultar una amenaza a la misma. Y pues la homosexualidad no escapa a ello. No es fácil allí “salir del closet” y muchos hombres forman familias tradicionales solo por tapar el sol con un dedo, solo por encajar en dicha sociedad.

Latin America... the new world where old customs abound, where doing something different from what society imposes can be a threat to it. And homosexuality is no exception. It is not easy there to "come out of the closet" and many men form traditional families just to cover the sun with a finger, just to fit into that society.

Contracorriente, es una historia escrita, dirigida y producida por Javier Fuentes León, estrenada en el año 2009, con una trama a pesar del paso del tiempo muy vigente en el continente. Se desarrolla en un pueblo costero de Perú y relata la vida de Miguel, un pescador humilde, que junto a su esposa, ha formado un hogar en el que ahora mismo esperan un bebé. Sin embargo Miguel tiene un secreto… mantiene un aventura desde hace mucho tiempo con Santiago, un artistita (fotógrafo y pintor), quien es abiertamente homosexual, que lo hace objeto de burlas y críticas en el pueblo.

Contracorriente is a story written, directed and produced by Javier Fuentes León, premiered in 2009, with a plot that, despite the passage of time, is very current in the continent. It takes place in a coastal town in Peru and tells the life of Miguel, a humble fisherman, who together with his wife, has formed a home in which they are expecting a baby. However, Miguel has a secret... he has been having an affair for a long time with Santiago, an artist (photographer and painter), who is openly homosexual, which makes him the object of ridicule and criticism in the village.

Resalta en la película la influencia del catolicismo dentro de la comunidad, religión a la que pertenecían Miguel y su esposa, a la que eran muy adeptos e incluso trabajaban de la mano con la iglesia en pro de la comunidad. También destacan costumbres y rituales de pescadores, el respeto a la vida y más aun a la muerte, la importancia dar a los fallecidos santa sepultura para que su alma “descanse en paz”.

The film highlights the influence of Catholicism within the community, a religion to which Miguel and his wife belonged, to which they were very adept and even worked hand in hand with the church on behalf of the community. They also emphasize the customs and rituals of fishermen, respect for life and even more so for death, the importance of giving the deceased a holy burial so that their souls may "rest in peace".

Todo lo anterior es un abreboca a un drama, en el que Miguel y Santiago tienen encuentros en su “lugar secreto” cerca del mar diariamente, aun así Miguel tiene un conflicto interno donde no acepta su sexualidad, lo que crea ambientes tensos entre los amantes. Por un lado Santiago y su necesidad de estar al lado de miguel aunque sea por poco y Miguel y su temor a ser descubiertos.

All of the above is an opener to a drama, in which Miguel and Santiago have daily encounters in their "secret place" near the sea, yet Miguel has an internal conflict where he does not accept his sexuality, which creates a tense atmosphere between the lovers. On the one hand Santiago and his need to be by Miguel's side, even if only for a short time, and Miguel and his fear of being discovered.

Todo cambia con la repentina desaparición del artista del pueblo, tal parece que la muerte se lo ha llevado inesperadamente y solo Miguel tiene la certeza de ello pues ahora el espíritu de Santiago le sigue a todos lados…

Everything changes with the sudden disappearance of the artist from the village, it seems that death has taken him unexpectedly and only Miguel is sure of it because now Santiago's spirit follows him everywhere...

Pudiese parecer de horror sin embargo es muy probable que Miguel entienda la importancia de expresar claramente los sentimientos cuando se está vivo, porque una vez en la muerte, ya no hay vuelta atrás!

It may seem horror, but it is very likely that Miguel understands the importance of expressing clearly one's feelings when one is alive, because once in death, there is no turning back!

También resulta penoso en la vida de Miguel la salida a la luz de toda la aventura con el desaparecido Santiago: los chismes en el pueblo, el rechazo de la familia y… la decepción de la esposa. Esta parte de la historia hace pensar que realmente entre el cielo y la tierra nada puede permanecer oculto.

Also painful in Miguel's life is the coming to light of the whole affair with the missing Santiago: the gossip in the village, the rejection of the family and... the disappointment of the wife. This part of the story makes you think that nothing can really remain hidden between heaven and earth.

Es una historia en definitiva, bien narrada, sin nada de relleno donde hasta la espiritualidad y la religión juegan un papel importante y complementario en la historia, y donde las fotos y las pinturas guardan secretos!

It is a story in short, well narrated, without any filler where even spirituality and religion play an important and complementary role in the story, and where photos and paintings keep secrets!
