Today I would like to talk to you about a very important topic for many mothers, especially those of us who have children on the autism spectrum: Verbal communication in our children.
While it is true that the human being from birth has many ways of communicating, even without using speech it is no less true that all of us, as parents, look forward to that great day when they say "Dad, Mom" and listen to their first words, although on many occasions they are wrongly said, correct them and make them see the correct use of them. The truth is that, not all the time it happens that way and especially within the autism spectrum.
The percentage of children with mutism within the spectrum has grown as the number of cases of autism worldwide and that is when the great question of many parents emerges, _ Will my son ever speak? _. For this question there is still no firm answer. The specialists, for the most part, agree that they cannot and should not make a strong positive or negative statement in this regard, especially if the child's hearing and speech system is in optimal condition. I particularly feel and think that, as parents, we have no other option than perseverance and this is where our protagonism comes in.

Without losing hope and patience we can do exercises with our little ones at home, which stimulate them to speak. Let's not leave all the work to the specialist and help our children both by reinforcing the specialist's exercises and by using our creativity and inventing our own exercises.
Although my twins do not present this condition, if I know of several cases and based on that I will give some tips to the moms, which will help them to stimulate speech from babies to the oldest ones.

So, what to do?
Let us remember that it is about giving our children tools for effective communication
1.- From babies, (for moms who have babies in arms) speak to them with tender, loving but clear and complete words, (they can be the inevitable dimunctions such as teterito, mamita, among others).
2.- When he points out an object as if he wants to call your attention to it, give it the name of the object while you give it to him. Avoid passing him what he asks and that's it. Make him repeat his name and if he doesn't do it the same way, repeat it every time the occasion arises.

I want to make a reflection in this regard. We know that we have many things to do in the day and that we do not have as much time as we would like to share with them, but every moment we have is a good time to talk to them, let's try to make this happen.

3.- When you have your baby on your lap, massage her/his cheeks in a circular way

4.- Talk to him/her a lot.
"From the earliest ages, auditory training is the basis for the correct development of oral communication". Margarita Gil, director of a learning and language cabinet.
5.- With the older children, play games in which they emulate and discriminate sounds:
of animals, of objects (bell, cornet, among others that you can think of).
6.- Another game, also recommended is Let's blow to learn to articulate words well, the child must exercise breathing and also learn to pace the rhythm of it. To do this, he places small paper or cotton balls on a smooth surface and blows on them to get them to the finish line first.
7.- Other activities that you can do is, observe a story and say what you see on its pages.
Take a story with illustrations for children, a picture or a magazine will help your little one expand vocabulary. The game consists of looking at the images together and asking him to point to and enunciate what he sees in them (begins with the name of the objects). When he does not know the name of one of the things he observes, you should tell him what it is and give him a brief description.
8.- Play the faces. In front of the mirror with your baby, begin to make different faces (sad, happy, worried, brave, crazy) that you can later invent.
9.- Sing to him and include him in the song by making him repeat your gestures. There is a song that I sang with my kids (all) since I was a child. The little ant

The little ant goes up, up, up, up
breaks the blade and falls again.
In the parts when he says: go up or break, perform the actions with your hands and body, in this way you will attract his attention.

One of the most important things is that you are willing to share with him / her. They feel if you are comfortable or not and based on this they will participate and respond positively to what you request and please, when you talk to them make sure they are seeing you, only then will you be able to realize that they pay attention to you .
