Як пов'язані Карпатія та Титанік? / How are the Carpathia and the Titanic connected?

Завдяки Джеймсу Кемерону, кожен знає історію про “не потопаючий” корабель Титанік, адже важко знайти людину, котра не бачила цей фільм. Але от згадок про Карпатію не так багато, хоча вона відіграла в цій історії досить значну роль.

Thanks to James Cameron, everyone knows the story of the "unsinkable" ship Titanic, because it is difficult to find a person who has not seen this film. But there are not many mentions of Carpathia, although it played a significant role in this story.

Отже, 15 квітня 1912 року лайнер Титанік, перебуваючи в своєму першому рейсі, зіткнувся з великим айсбергом в Атлантичному океані та затонув. Це дійсно найстрашніша катастрофа минулого століття, котра забрала не одну сотню життів. Але для того, щоб відкрити для себе значення Карпатії потрібно знов повернутись в ту ніч та пригадати деякі деталі.

Thus, on April 15, 1912, the Titanic, on its first voyage, collided with a large iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and sank. This is truly the worst catastrophe of the last century, which took hundreds of lives. But in order to discover the significance of the Carpathia, you need to go back that night and remember some details.

Після зіткнення з айсбергом, командування лайнеру передавало сигнал SOS для всіх суден, що могли знаходитись поруч. На жаль, Атлантичний океан не можна назвати занадто людним місцем, де морський транспорт курсує часто та близько одне до одного. Тим більше тоді, на початку минулого століття.

After the collision with the iceberg, the command of the liner transmitted an SOS signal to all ships that could be nearby. Unfortunately, the Atlantic Ocean cannot be called too crowded a place where sea transport runs frequently and close to each other. Especially then, at the beginning of the last century.

Але, інколи чудеса трапляються. На сигнал катастрофи відгукнувся британський корабель Карпатія, котрий в ту ніч виконував рейс з Америки до Середземномор'я і був на відстані в 100 кілометрів від місця аварії. Вони були єдиними, хто відправився врятувати людей. Екіпажу знадобилось близько трьох годин для того, щоб дістатись до Титаніка, при цьому пароплав розвив рекордну швидкість завдяки тому, що тут вимкнули всі електроприлади й, навіть, опалення. На момент прибуття сам гігант був вже повністю під водою. Корабель британців зміг врятувати 710 вцілілих пасажирів та доставити їх до США.

But, sometimes miracles happen. The British ship Carpathia, which was sailing from America to the Mediterranean that night and was at a distance of 100 kilometres from the accident, responded to the catastrophe signal. They were the only ones who hurried to save people. It took the crew about three hours to reach the Titanic. At the same time, the steamer developed a record speed due to the fact that all electrical appliances and even heating were turned off. At the time of arrival, the Titanic was already completely underwater. The British ship was able to rescue 710 surviving passengers and take them to the United States.

Сама Карпатія теж затонула, але вже під час Першої Світової війни. Трапилось це 17 липня 1918 року через торпедну атаку німецького підводного човна. Екіпаж, на щастя, зміг врятуватись.

The Carpathia themselves also sank, but during the First World War. It happened on July 17, 1918, due to a torpedo attack by a German submarine. Fortunately, the crew was able to escape.

Яка історія в скульптури? / What is the history of sculpture?

Скульптуру встановили практично в самому центрі міста 15 квітня 2013 року через 101 рік після катастрофи. Всередині Карпатія порожня і кожен бажаючий може захопити з собою маленьку свічку для того, щоб встановити її в пам'ять загиблим. Найкраще це робити ввечері для того, щоб побачити, як у кораблика світяться ілюмінатори.

The sculpture was installed almost in the heart of the city on April 15, 2013, 101 years after the disaster. Inside the Carpathia is empty and anyone can take a small candle to set it in memory of the dead. It is best to do this in the evening to see the ship's windows glow.

Чому Карпатію встановлено в Ужгороді? / Why Carpathia established in Uzhgorod?

По-перше, назва перегукується з гірським Карпатським краєм. І для закарпатців це дуже приємно чути!

First, the name echoes the mountainous Carpathian region. And for Transcarpathians, it is very nice to hear!

А по-друге, на початку 20 століття українці почали массово емігрувати до США. Як відомо, серед загиблих на Титаніку були присутніми і наші співвітчизники, а на самій Карпатії в ту ніч знаходився закарпатець Юрко Курта, котрий повертався на рідні землі із заробітків.

And secondly, at the beginning of the 20th century, Ukrainians began to emigrate en masse to the United States. As you know, among the dead on the Titanic were our compatriots, and in the Carpathia that night was a Transcarpathian Yurko Kurta, who was returning to his native land from work in USA.

По словам Юрія це був найстрашніший день у його житті і ще багато років після цієї подорожі йому снилися моторошні сни. А ще, саме за його ініціативи в 1915 році був встановлений перший у світі пам'ятник жертвам Титаніку, котрий Курта самостійно оплатив.

According to Yuri, it was the worst day of his life and for many years after this trip, he had terrible dreams. In addition, it was on his initiative in 1915 that the world's first monument to the victims of the Titanic was erected, for which Kurta gave his own money.

Встановив цю пам'ятку він на власному полі між Червеньовом і Домбоками (Закарпаття, Мукачівський район), де автором ескізу був видатний закарпатський історик Теодор Легоцький. На жаль, якісної фотографії в інтернеті я не знайшла. Сподіваюсь, що колись буду там проїздом та зможу показати все вам особито :)

He erected this monument on his own field between Chervenyiv and Domboky (Zakarpattia, Mukachevo district). The author of the sketch was a prominent Transcarpathian historian Theodore Lehotsky. Unfortunately, I did not find quality photography on the Internet. I hope that someday I will be there by road and be able to show you everything in person :)
