Language is a barrier or it is not a barrier...

(Edited)

Language is a barrier or it is not, this is one of the most conflicting topics for me if you ask me. Well, actually language is not a barrier honestly speaking if you try but it does make communication hard. Bengali is my native language, English is my second language but I do know Hindi and Russian too. I speak Bengali fluently as I am a native speaker, my English level is intermediate, Hindi same but Russian beginner level. I still find it hard to speak a complete sentence and I struggle.

I always hear complaints from native speakers when it comes to speaking another language like Russian or Spanish and English (International Language). I know the struggle as my English pronunciation is not so good, I speak fast and most of my words are hard to understand. My Bengali is clear obviously because this is my mother tongue and Hindi so so and Russian is just like when a baby starts learning a language.

Language can be a barrier when it comes to communication and understanding each other. But if you try you can survive, it's up to you how much you are interested in learning a new language.

Let me share a short story with you which inspired me to write this post. I was in a shop a few days ago where I choose something to buy but wanted to know some details about the product. The salesgirl was a native speaker obviously and it was Russian. So, we both decided to give some time to communicate with each other. Me and her we both decided to express each other using mixed English and Russian as she understands English but can't speak properly. So, later for a few important details, we both take the advantage of google translator, and the matter solved.

The reason why I am sharing this simple story because I think communication is the key, the more you speak and communicate, the more you will learn. We both faced difficulties with communication plus the salesgirl gave her time on me too. She could have told me to translate on my own as most people don't that but she took the time to explain everything using English and Russian. My Russian and her English was not perfect at all but we managed...

Even my friend was telling me to make a Russian boyfriend learn Russian easily more than using any other books.

Communication will help you to learn and improve your language skill no matter how much you try on your own. When you speak to someone using their own language, you will learn the language fast rather than from books. We feel shy or do hesitate too when it comes to communicating in a new language. But trust me, shyness only creates barriers nothing else.

If you start practicing the language and start speaking, you will be able to see the growth. But it takes time but the main fact is how much you are desperate to learn a new language...

If you know how to community or if you try at least to communicate, then language is not a barrier. It's all about practice and communication...

I am tagging @cranium and @hafizullah, two different language speakers to share their opinion with us...

I like the idea of not seeing language as a barrier and being able to take advantage of the translation tools that currently exist to communicate with people from other parts of the world and at the same time learn other languages. Thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed reading this post, Priyan. I agree the best way to learn the language is to communicate and practice regardless of mistakes. Just this morning, I tried to buy meat and engaged in the dialect where we live which I am not fluent in. The butcher didn't understand me because of my accent. He appreciated it knowing that I tried and he corrected me. I watched a TED talk once from a polyglot and he said we learn by making mistakes and through repetitive exposure.

Exactly, if we don't try to practice and speak, it's hard to learn the language as well. I guess that's why people say reading, writing, listening, and speaking is very important to learn a new language...
