Joker: some thoughts about the finale (ENG - ITA)

Joker has driven half the world crazy. Todd Philips' film was not content with being a great film, excellent from the first to the last minute. With his final minutes he wanted to change everything, question everything and leave the spectators with a thousand worms in the brain. If you haven't seen the film, don't read on. Joker told the story of the origins of DC Comics' most famous villain. In spite of everything, the ending casts doubt that it was indeed the clown's Origin Story. The most accepted theory is that all we have seen is nothing but the fantasy of Arthur's hallucinatory mind. If this were the case, Arthur Fleck would not be Joker. This would explain why Bruce Wayne as a child coexists in the universe of an adult Joker. It would explain some inconsistencies or strange circumstances and above all it would throw even more chaos and mystery on the origins of the Joker. And this, for a character whose origin has never been explained, would give even more strength to the character himself. The film would therefore be nothing but a metaphor. The metaphor of a society devastated by personalities, corruption and blind to the suffering of others. The metaphor of a social redemption that generates or generates what everyone will know as a Joker for hotels in the mind of a poor madman.

Joker ha fatto impazzire mezzo mondo. La pellicola di Todd Philips non si è accontentata di essere un film ottimo, eccellente dal primo all'ultimo minuto. Con i suoi minuti finali ha voluto stravolgere tutto, mettere in discussione tutto e lasciare gli spettatori con mille tarli nel cervello. Se non avete visto il film non continuate a leggere. Joker ha raccontato la storia di origini del villain più celebre della DC Comics. Nonostante tutto il finale mette in dubbio che si sia trattata davvero della Origin Story del clown. La teoria più accreditata è che tutto quello che abbiamo visto non è altro che frutto della fantasia della mente allucinata di Arthur. Se cosi fosse Arthur Fleck non sarebbe Joker. Questo spiegherebbe come mai Bruce Wayne bambino coesiste nell'universo di un Joker adulto. Spiegherebbe alcune incongruenze o strane circostanze e soprattutto getterebbe ancora più caos e mistero sulle origini del Joker. E questo, per un personaggio la cui origine non è mai stata spiegata, darebbe ancora più forza al personaggio stesso. Il film non sarebbe altro che una metafora dunque. La metafora di una società devastata da personalismi, corruzione e cieca di fronte alle sofferenze altrui. La metafora di un riscatto sociale che per quanto alberghi nella mente di un povero pazzo genera o genererà quello che tutti conosceranno come Joker.

Perhaps the Joker is not a person but an entity, a Banksy entity that embodies an ideal, albeit an evil one, and that makes a mockery of the person who plays the role of the clown, a bit like what happens with the Guy Fawkes mask for the anonymous movement.
So what did we actually see happen?
Who killed Thomas Wayne?
Are Bruce and Arthur brothers?
Murray Franklin really died?
Unanswered questions that we could never understand as the final comment suggests.
But what we have learned to understand very well is why Gotham and only Gotham gave birth to the Joker. Gotham had his hero but gave birth to his antihero well. Joker is the fruit of a sick society, as is often ours. Joker is born where the last ones are always the last ones. Joker lives when he realizes that it would be better to die. Joker proliferates when so many feel robbed and not just a few. Joker represents evil but not evil as an end in itself. Not a bad thing in search of personal revenge in search of redemption. It represents a very sick evil that finds its cure in violence, a violence against who and what generated that evil.
No justification but a crude analysis of evil and illness as such. A film that speaks to us of Joker and not of The Joker therefore, and does it subtly and terribly without fear of disturbing our sleep with that evil and very sick laugh.

E dire che già il titolo suggeriva qualcosa. I fan più accaniti avevano da subito visto come curiosa la scelta di chiamare il film "Joker" e non "The Joker". Il film ci conferma che quello che abbiamo visto è forse la genesi del Joker in quanto entità ma non del Joker in quanto personaggio. Arthur non è il Joker ma è forse colui che lo isprirerà. Forse il Joker non è una persona ma appunto un'entità, un'entità alla Banksy che incarna un ideale, seppur malefico, e che si fa beffe della persona che veste i panni del clown, un po come accade con la maschera di Guy Fawkes per il movimento anonymous. Ma quindi quello che abbiamo visto è accaduto davvero? Chi ha ucciso Thomas Wayne? Bruce e Arthur sono fratelli? Murray Franklin è morto davvero? Domande insolute che non potremmo mai capire come ci suggerisce la chiosa finale. Quello che però abbiamo imparato a capire benissimo è perchè Gotham e solo Gotham ha dato gli albori al Joker. Gotham ha avuto il suo eroe ma ha partorito ben prima il suo antieroe. Joker è il frutto di una società malata, come spesso lo è la nostra. Joker nasce dove gli ultimi sono sempre più ultimi. Joker vive quando ha capito che sarebbe meglio morire. Joker prolifera quando sono tanti a sentirsi derubati e non solo alcuni. Joker rappresenta il male ma non un male fine a se stesso. Non un male in cerca di vendetta personale ne in cerca di riscatto. Rappresenta un male malatissimo che trova nella violenza la sua cura, una violenza contro chi e cosa ha generato quel male. Nessuna giustificazione ma una cruda analisi del male e della malattia in quanto tali. Un film che ci parla di Joker e non di The Joker dunque, e lo fa sottilmente e terribilmente senza paura di disturbarci il sonno con quella malefica e malatissima risata.
