Let the virtue-signaling commence!

Nerd By Northwest #183 – “Karen”
(Click on the image to see the full-size version)

It seems most good things eventually get twisted into a virtue-signaling cringe-fest these days, and sadly masks are the latest casualty. A large part of American society that largely ignored the advice "using masks in crowded places or when in close contact with strangers is a good idea" a few months ago are now screaming their heads off at shoppers not wearing masks in the grocery store. It's such a "Karen" thing to do.

On that not, I fully support using the "Karen" label for men exhibiting the same behaviors. Partly because I think it's only fair... it's not gender-specific behavior and some guys can be just as (or more) obnoxious. But mostly because the 'guy' Karens get so bent outta shape when you do it... 😈

Ahahaha. I can relate to that. Many people are being quite obsessed about those damn masks. 😂

I actually think masks are a great idea (in crowded places and the like), and even promoted them back when the WHO and CDC were saying most people shouldn't bother wearing them. But naturally we get people who never gave a second thought about masks three months ago now wanting to lecture everyone else about them. There's nothing so good that some doofus can't go and take it too far! 😏

In the UK people don't seem to get too upset about it. I was just at the supermarket and only a few people were wearing masks. Just minimising contact and proximity probably does as much good. Of course people with health issues need to be more careful.

I feel sorry for any actual Karens out there.

Yeah, pretty much the same in Mongolia. Of course we've managed to avoid local outbreaks in Mongolia (all our cases were brought in from outside the country and quarantined on entry), so we can afford to be a little relaxed about it. While I personally think wearing a mask in a moderately-busy supermarket is prudent risk management, I also find the people yelling at the non-mask-wearers in the stores are acting like jerks. As long as somebody isn't a heavy breather and getting too close, I say just leave them be...

As for the 'Karen' meme, as far as I've read most of the people actually named 'Karen' don't take it seriously or personally. Sure it sucks a bit to have a name associated with a negative thing, but sometimes that just happens. And it certainly pales in comparison to the poor people that share the name Epstein or Cosby! 😉

Very true! Even here in France is pretty much the same thing. Karens wouldn't jump at you but stare until you feel ashamed you're not wearing anything on your face!

Staring is a little rude but thankfully not too over-the-top. I guess it's hard to compete with current American culture when it comes to over-reacting over small things 😉
