If we are living inside a simulation I would imagine a scenario quite similar to the story of the famous movie Matrix. Technology will have advanced incredibly and Artificial Intelligence will have developed to such an extent that it would be a colossal danger for humanity, which would start a "technological apocalypse".
Humans would cease to be expendable, or at least, so would be considered by an intelligence superior to ours. So our human race would be dominated and enslaved by beings with an intelligence far above ours, but which were created by ourselves.
