This publication has something in common with the first one I made for this challenge, because like success, love is one of the things that people desire with fervor but unfortunately very few understand the true essence of these concepts or phenomena of the universe. And it is quite curious that both success and love are elements that people normally standardize as indispensable issues or of first necessity, and yet unfortunately even in this 21st century these issues have not been shown to their full extent, and not because they are precisely difficult topics to expose, but for various reasons that have to do with our ego and our level of general culture, and that have greatly diverted the original concept in the minds of people.

Starting from this point we can see that love is commonly related to the subject of couple relationships, in which unfortunately on many occasions love is confused with passionate and erotic issues, which usually only last a year or less. This has been a very partial and rigid vision that has imposed the idea that love has no place in spaces other than that. The market that currently exists for certain niches such as music and entertainment is an unquestionable example of this, and I think there is no need to mention examples because these are things that we experience every day in this society. In some sectors and human groups there is the awareness that love encompasses many other aspects, forms and facets to show, but this awareness is not the common denominator in the world. It should not seem strange to us that this short-sighted view about love is the cause of so many failures and problems among people on a large scale.

Regarding the definition of love I have seen a lot of articles on the net that among other things show what would be the basic types of love that so to speak have been determined by psychology and religion. I do not intend to expose and deepen on the types of love that have been determined all scientific and social branches, since on the other hand in some internet portals I see that abound confusions, and for my concept, very bad associations with the concept of love.

Ver fuente.

So what is love really?

I would like to talk about this not from my experience but from what is logical, and what moral principles dictate a healthy coexistence. In principle, love is to seek the welfare of everything and everyone around us.

It sounds simple but it is curious how few people really do this as it sounds. And what is welfare? Well-being is the set of conditions that add up to such indispensable things for others as peace, tranquility, and above all, respect.

About this there is a piece of advice that I consider key and primordial to understand what true love is all about. It is one of the many commandments that are in the Bible (without wanting to talk about religion but just approaching this from common sense), and that textually says this:

Love your neighbor as yourself.
View source.

And what does this mean literally speaking? Very simple. It means that love must begin with ourselves. Before loving other people we have to learn to love and value ourselves, and thus have a love that we can offer. There are people who say they love other people, and they have even told us that they love us, but inside they live with many problems of self-acceptance and other things that violate their own well-being, and even if they feel empathy for us, or some kind of passion in the case of our partner, it is very difficult for these people to feel for us what they do not feel for themselves.

I have always said that no one can give what they don't have. If you don't have money you can't go around offering money to other people because otherwise you can get into a lot of trouble. If you have no knowledge about a particular subject or trade, then you cannot offer classes or courses of any kind to anyone because you would not have any serious content to impart. The same if you don't have food, if you don't have a house ............. And of course love does not escape this harsh reality.

Love above all is a mental and spiritual state, and like any state to reach it we must first go through a whole period of processes and tests that involve starting from the simplest thing that is to love ourselves first, to the part of expanding that love outward, pointing to all things and beings around us.

The other interesting perspective that this biblical commandment has and that is mentioned in some other parts of the bible is that all the commandments that are imposed there (which are very many) are finally summarized in one .... And what does this mean? That the one who loves does not lie, the one who loves does not steal, does not kill, does not harm, does not procure any harm to any person. The one who loves respects, the one who loves does not covet or envy anyone but on the contrary, feels joy for the achievements of others because the sense of belonging drives to feel those achievements of others as their own. The one who loves respects your way of thinking and feeling, without feeling obliged to share these things with you, but simply accepting you and offering you his fraternity and solidarity.

And all these feelings of solidarity, fraternity and respect are first built from the foundations, which start with self-love, precisely for the same reason that we would be unable to do any of these harms to ourselves voluntarily and consciously, because that would turn us into masochists. Or at least in this way we should procure the good for ourselves. Of course there are exceptions with some people who, for example, are used to lie to themselves, evading the reality that shelters them, or people who are even capable of taking their own life at a certain moment.

When a person becomes capable of doing any of these damages we can be sure that self-esteem has begun to diminish, depending on the magnitude of the problem they are going through. In many cases we can find serious pathological or psychiatric problems that cloud people's judgment.

Love for ourselves also implies respecting the things that are sacred in our passage through this world.

Those things and beings are, in the first place God, because if we do not seek respect for God then we can hardly do well in this life. Beyond any religious thought that I do not have at this moment, to respect God and give him his place is to respect our origin as human beings, it is to respect life which is another of the sacred things to mention here. If you respect God you must also respect your own parents who were the means for you to live this life..... Everything is very closely connected.

At the beginning of this article I said that I did not want to delve into what would be the study of love from different theories that have been raised in psychology, because apart from the fact that there are many of those things that I can not share, I think that any kind of love and all its concepts are fully applicable to everything that we can inject our love. It applies to all the people around us when we seek to do good for those people, whether it is by sharing our things with those people, when we are supportive to anyone, when we are kind and honest, etc. It also applies to our work inclinations, career inclinations, sentimental inclinations, adventurous inclinations, and any kind of healthy inclination that makes us feel satisfied with ourselves. It is much more noticeable when these occupations or careers inspire passion in us, since passion is an important characteristic for love, without meaning that this is a definition.

The truth is that at least to be able to talk about offering true love we must think about the common welfare, making sure to first cultivate that welfare in ourselves to then have something to offer to those around us.

One more characteristic that would be important to highlight in order to describe love is that everything we do out of love has to be selfless and spontaneous, something that is truly born in our heart.

This implies having a deep-rooted sense of belonging and fraternity towards our family, our friends, our community, and towards all those spaces where we can have our meeting point, which is achieved by taking the initiative to propose to turn our actions into a real contribution for those spaces and those people we care about, and of course for ourselves.
