My proudest moment (Español)

My proudest moment (English)

When I read this title I reflected that there have been several moments in which I have felt proud, both as a group and as an individual I have achieved many accomplishments. I have also been instrumental and supportive in helping others achieve their goals and seeing them reach their goals and overcome their challenges, of course, I feel very proud. However, after a brief exploration, I decided on one. In this post, I share with you my proudest moment.

Good reading!

Perhaps my proudest moment is the day I finally received my Ph.D. degree in marine sciences. Not only for what the degree itself represents but for all the effort and implications associated with it.

I have always enjoyed studying, learning, and sharing knowledge. I think that is why I have dedicated myself to academia. In spite of that, obtaining this degree required a lot of effort because I had to take quite a few subjects to level myself in the area of oceanography, learn several things I didn't know, look for a thesis topic, and develop it.

I wanted to do something interesting, to try to find a project that was well-founded and with adequate financial support to be able to complete it. Therefore, I applied for some scholarships, in which I was not selected, but I got an opportunity with a researcher in the area of paleoceanography. Then, I did a doctoral stay for almost two years in a Canadian university, I worked with sediment samples from the Arctic Ocean, I had to learn a lot, as languages to the scientific part.

I worked in a lab with equipments I had never used before, spent two full winter seasons, and worked very hard. When everything was almost ready I practically didn't sleep because of the stress. The administrative procedures at the university where I studied became complicated, I had to comply with the different requirements. It was quite complicated. So, when I finally defended the thesis I felt a little relief, then I did all the administrative paperwork.

There were difficult moments along the way. Sometimes I wanted to give up everything, but I had a lot of support, especially from my circle of friends in Canada who encouraged each other not to give up. So the day I went to my ceremony, heard my name called, and received my diploma, I felt extremely proud. From that moment on I felt very strong, I gained more self-confidence and determination.

Although I describe this moment of pride, I try to lead a life to be proud of, to do my job the best I can, and to be grateful are the things that today definitely make me feel very proud. Because of this, I have many proud moments on a daily basis.
