Hello there!

Aren't you tired of traveling yet?

Honestly, my husband, daughter and I, although we love active vacation, but frequent or even daily transfers from hotel to hotel are tiring. Is there a way to get used to it? Anyway, our journey lasted only 10 days, and I will say in advance that I'm not going to talk about each day separately but about eventful ones.

So, where was I. The rented car and noise it makes, my biggest concern,

In the morning, the first thing I did after open my eyes was to check my mail. I received a response to my yesterday's letter from Avis. Since we are still in Bursa, he offered to visit their local office there in the morning and change the car. We did so. On the way, we filled a full tank according to the full to full contract. They just changed the car. Only at the very end, before giving me the keys, the manager asked what the problem was.

DSC04775.jpg

The replacement car was exactly the same, but...

  • not white, but gray;
  • mileage was not 30, but 87 thousand;
  • there was a persistent stench of cigarettes and sweat in the cabin;
  • when my husband connected his iPhone to USB, the car fell into deep reflections, and the phone informed: "The connected device is incompatible with the iPhone". My Samsung was ignored at all. So, the music can be only local. During Ramazan, it's slow and melancholy, not suitable for long journeys.

So, we are on the highway. Rain clouds hang over us gloomily, covering the beautiful mountain ranges on the horizon. The crossing is about 400 km, so this is our whole attraction - the view outside the window and the radio.

The rented car was equipped with an HGS device, which allows us to drive on a toll road without stopping. Formally. In fact, we do not give anyone money or a card through the window, but the vehicle must be driven at a speed of 20 so that the barrier rises automatically.

That day I saw hitchhikers on the highway for the first time. Unexpectedly.

DSC04811.jpg

DSC04816.jpg

As soon as we got off the highway onto the rural road that meandered between the mountains, our hearts beat faster. I can't count how many times we looked for a place to stop on a mountain serpentine to take a photo.

DSC04800.jpg

The road was rising higher and higher, and the clouds were coming down to us. Sometimes a snow-covered ridge could be seen in the distance. We were approaching the mountain pass. Here was the border of the ancient Lydian kingdom 600 years BC.

DSC04823.jpg

A picturesque valley opens before us. But where are we driving?

Our next point is the small village of Birgi. It will be an intermediate point on the way to (here our route changed on the go again) the ancient city of Ephesus, near Izmir.

Birgi /

It turned out that it was not just a long journey, but a journey through time. There was no transition. We just turned onto the stone-paved road and found ourselves in another world. A little-known Turkish delight, quiet, harmonious and cozy. This is a magical mixture of different eras - Phrygian, Persian, Lydian, Pergamum, Roman and, of course, the Ottoman. Yes, Birgi dates back to 750 B.C., according to estimates.

DSC04868.jpg

As I said before, after 5 pm all settlements empty. We checked into our hotel and were going to look around before dark when it started raining.

We didn't have a chance to enjoy the Seljuk and classical Ottoman decorating style of mosques from inside or visit the farmer's market, to taste Turkish tea or coffee in a courtyard of a local cafe. Everything was closed.

DSC04879.jpg

DSC04884.jpg

Fortunately, the cafe in the courtyard of our hotel was still open. It was rainy, so we sat inside. Three local visitors were sitting at one of the tables. One of them spoke English and helped us order at least some food. It turned out that the dish we ordered was Turkish mantis. They are tiny, smaller than dumplings. Served with yogurt and some spice or seasoning. It was extremely tasty.

DSC04871.jpg

The hotel had only 4 rooms. Actually, as far as I understand, there are only 2 hotels in the town. The low ceiling, my favorite lovely Turkish lamps, the wooden floor, the narrow spiral staircase that creaked pleasantly as you step, the low windows, the hand-embroidered curtains and pillows, even the towels and toilet paper holder were embroidered. Actually, the door to the bathroom was in the wardrobe. As if visiting Narnia or Sheer. I guess it worth a dedicated post as I really want to share all those sweet details.

I was just staring out the window when I suddenly heard a loud sound like an explosion. I think I even saw the flash. It turned out to be a shot from a cannon - a reminder of the evening prayer. I have never seen such a thing anywhere! And will never forget :D

DSC04963.jpg

DSC04974.jpg

Residents of small towns know each other, and they greet each other when met. But in my opinion, drivers in Turkey are especially communicative. Our hotel was made of wood and stone, with no additional soundproofing. So I woke up with the first rays of the sun to the sounds of vehicles passing through the cobblestones and their horns. As my family moved smoothly from dreaming to reality, I quickly got dressed and went out. The sky was clear, I missed the sun so much!

In fact, I like to walk the empty streets at dawn, but I like to sleep no less. Therefore, such an opportunity is rare.

DSC04899.jpg

On the street, I immediately found a companion - a big dog. Somehow we immediately got along with him, and went wandering the empty streets together.

DSC04909.jpg

By the way, here is our place - Yeni Gelin Evi Hotel. Two windows on the top floor above the entrance are windows of our room. No parking, car just at the entrance. Isn't it cute?

DSC04891.jpg

DSC04942.jpg

Our room had an electric heater. But locals still heat their homes with firewood and coal. The smell of smoke followed us relentlessly throughout the provincial part.

DSC04890.jpg

My companion and I reached a local attraction - Cakiraga Konak. This estate was built in the style of the Seljuks in the 18th century and belonged to a wealthy family. It's decorated with superb woodwork and beautiful painting. I read about it and saw it in the photos, but fortunately ... you may have guessed, closed for restoration.

DSC04907.jpg

Yesterday we saw it, but did not go into the yard, today my new friend led me through a narrow passage, then we went up the stairs to the upper street. What a beautiful view!

DSC04906.jpg

Oh, I feel like walk around these streets for hours and hours. But my family is waiting for me (hope so). Time for breakfast.

I must admit, it was the most delicious breakfast I ever had in a hotel in my life. Some of those unknown delicacies I never tried before.

Usually, it is my daughter who shoots all our meals. But this time I couldn't resist!

After fine dining, we were ready to continue our way. It is a pity to leave such a hospitable place, but there are so many sites to see ahead. We go west! Stay tuned :)

Thank you for your visit. Hope it was interesting reading and viewing :) If yes, I hope to see you again soon.

This is the kind of tourism I like too. To discover new places and not crowded with tourists, to be as close as possible to the daily life of the people who live there. Eat their food. You had a wonderful expedition, beyond all the little inconveniences.
