Traveling through Amazonas #3: Turtle Stone, Painted Stone and The Jungle Slide / De viaje por Amazonas #3: Piedra La Tortuga, Piedra Pintada y El Tobogán de la Selva

Greetings to all who read these lines! In this third part of my tour of the Amazonas state, in the south of Venezuela, I invite you to know some of the natural and undoubtedly surprising beauties that this region has.

¡Saludos a todos los que leen estas líneas! En esta tercera parte de mi recorrido por el estado Amazonas, al sur de Venezuela, los invito a conocer algunas de las bellezas naturales y sin duda sorprendentes que tiene esta región.

On our first exit beyond the city of Puerto Ayacucho, where we were staying, we took the southern highway to see one of the most famous places in the region, The Jungle Slide.

En nuestra primera salida más allá de la ciudad de Puerto Ayacucho, donde nos estábamos quedando, tomamos el eje carretero sur para conocer uno de los lugares más famosos de la región, el Tobogán de la Selva.

But before we got there, on the way we saw several attractive things, including a giant tortoise, and of course, we stopped to admire it.

Pero antes de llegar allí, por el camino se nos aparecieron varias cosas atractivas, entre ellas una tortuga gigante, y claro, nos detuvimos para admirarla.

The Turtle Stone, named for its resemblance to this reptile, is a huge granite rock formation, according to studies it is about 1,300 million years old.

La Piedra de la Tortuga, llamada así por parecerse a este reptil, es una enorme formación de roca granítica, según estudios tiene una antigüedad de unos 1300 millones de años.

We got out of the car and got on some stones that are in front to be able to take some photos where it could be seen completely, around it the very green savannah stretches.

Nos bajamos del carro y nos subimos a unas piedras que están al frente para poder hacer unas fotos donde se viera completa, a su alrededor se extiende la sabana muy verde.

Its highest point is 400 meters, they told us that having been decreed by the State as a Natural Monument, it is protected and it is not allowed to climb it.

Su punto más alto es de 400 metros, nos dijeron que al haber sido decretada por el Estado como Monumento Natural, está protegida y no se permite subirla.

Over there we find a churuata, a house of the Piaroas indigenous people made with wooden posts and a palm roof, it is very cool, ideal to deal with the heat that it does in these lands, on average 32-33º.

Por allí nos encontramos con una churuata, vivienda de los indígenas piaroas hecha con postes de madera y techo de palma, es muy fresca, ideal para lidiar con el calor que hace en estas tierras, en promedio 32-33º.

The characteristic black stones of Amazonas continued to appear on the road, of different shapes and sizes and around them a lot of greenery, rain constantly falls in this region.

Las piedras negras características del Amazonas siguieron apareciendo por el camino, de diferentes formas y tamaños y a su alrededor mucho verdor, cae lluvia constantemente por esta región.

In front of Turtle Stone there is also the Painted Stone Natural Monument, it is another immense black granite rock where the largest petroglyph complex in Venezuela is located, there we were told that there are caves and cemeteries of ancient indigenous populations.

Frente a La Piedra de la Tortuga está también el Monumento Natural Piedra Pintada, es otra inmensa roca negra de granito donde se encuentra el complejo de petroglifos más grande de Venezuela, allí nos dijeron que hay cuevas y cementerios de antiguas poblaciones indígenas.

We went improvised, that's why we only captured what we could, it would have been great to visit the whole place with the company of a guide.

Nosotros fuimos improvisadamente, por eso sólo captamos lo que pudimos, hubiese sido genial visitar todo el lugar con la compañía de un guía.

These cave paintings that include an alligator, a bird, a man, among other somewhat strange figures, are about 5,000 years old. You have to go at a time when the sun is not perched directly on the stone because if not, you will not be able to distinguish the drawings well.

Estas pinturas rupestres que incluyen un caimán, un pájaro, un hombre, entre otras figuras algo extrañas, tienen unos 5.000 años de antigüedad. Hay que ir a una hora en la que el sol no esté posado directamente en la piedra porque si no, no podrás distinguir bien los dibujos.

We continue our route and now yes! to The Jungle Slide, which is located a little before reaching an indigenous community called Coromoto.

Continuamos nuestra ruta y ¡ahora sí!, al Tobogán de la Selva, el cual está ubicado un poco antes de llegar a una comunidad indígena llamada Coromoto.

When we got to where the cars are parked, this was the first image we saw of the place:

The pavement ends and a large rocky slab begins that indicates that we are accessing the Jungle Slide.

El pavimento termina y empieza una gran laja rocosa que indica que estamos accediendo al Tobogán de la Selva.

In this spa there is a slope and a large amount of water falls from the upper part that nourishes the wells and also slides down the immense rock creating a natural slide that ends in a pool.

En este balneario hay una pendiente y de la parte superior cae gran cantidad de agua que nutre los pozos y también se desliza por la inmensa roca creando un tobogán natural que termina en una piscina.

When there is enough water, people have a lot of fun jumping with the flow of the liquid through this natural stone slide polished by the years until they reach the pool. The extension is about 20 meters at an angle of 45º.

Cuando hay bastante agua la gente se divierte muchísimo lanzándose con el fluir del líquido por este tobogán natural de piedra pulida por los años hasta llegar a la piscina. La extensión es de unos 20 metros en ángulo de 45º.

The water is quite cold, but little by little the body gets used to it and more so if you stand where the sun hits. We stayed bathing in the wells, when we went there wasn't so much water running down the slide, it hadn't rained much those days.

El agua es bastante fría, pero poco a poco el cuerpo se acostumbra y más si te pones donde pega el sol. Nosotros nos quedamos bañándonos en los pozos, cuando fuimos no había tanta agua corriendo por el tobogán, no había llovido mucho esos días.

The place also has areas to sit down to eat and grill.

El lugar cuenta también con zonas para sentarse a comer y hacer parrilla.

It was almost 5:00 in the afternoon and we decided it was time to return to Puerto Ayacucho.

Ya eran casi las 5:00 de la tarde y decidimos que era hora de regresar a Puerto Ayacucho.

From what we saw on the way, any river is good for bathing in Amazonas, the people around here enjoyed the sunset there, eating and drinking and many jumped from the bridges hahaha.

Por lo que vimos en la vía, cualquier río es bueno para bañarse en Amazonas, la gente de por aquí disfrutaba el atardecer ahí, comiendo y bebiendo y muchos se lanzaban desde los puentes jajaja.
