When I made this trip, I had wanted to go to Sucre state, in eastern Venezuela, for a long time. I had read about it and seen its landscapes on the Internet, especially its beaches, and I also have a friend who is from there, who had told me about the beauties of her land.

Cuando hice este viaje tenía mucho tiempo queriendo ir al estado Sucre, en el oriente venezolano, había leído sobre él y visto sus paisajes en Internet, sobre todo sus playas, y también tengo una amiga que es de allá, que me había contado de las bellezas de su tierra.

I spent about two weeks planning which places to visit and calculating the budget and then I bought the plane tickets, if I had gone alone I would have opted for the bus, which is cheaper, but I wanted to take my mother and for her comfort it was better to go by air and avoid the fatigue of about 8 hours on the road.

Estuve unas dos semanas planificando qué sitios visitar y calculando el presupuesto y luego compré los pasajes de avión, si hubiese ido sola optaba por el autobús que es más barato, pero quería llevar a mi mamá y para su comodidad era mejor ir por aire y evitar el cansancio de unas 8 horas por carretera.

We arrived at the Antonio José de Sucre International Airport around one in the afternoon, we took a taxi and went to a posada that I had reserved located near the historic center of Cumaná. My first impression of the city was pleasant, although it is warm, it also has greenery and its streets and squares seemed beautiful to me.

Llegamos al Aeropuerto Internacional Antonio José de Sucre alrededor de la una de la tarde, tomamos un taxi y nos fuimos hasta una posada que había reservado ubicada cerca del casco histórico de Cumaná. Mi primera impresión de la ciudad fue de agrado, a pesar de que es calurosa también tiene verdor y sus calles y plazas me parecieron bonitas.

We left our things at the inn and went to see the surroundings and look for a place to have lunch, we got a nice restaurant nearby and ate.

Dejamos nuestras cosas en la posada y nos fuimos a conocer los alrededores y a buscar un sitio para almorzar, conseguimos un bonito restaurante cerca y comimos.

Then we took a taxi to the San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle, one of the most famous sites in Cumaná, I had read that the best moment to visit it was at sunset.

Después tomamos un taxi para el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia, uno de los sitios más famosos de Cumaná, había leído que la mejor hora para visitarlo era al atardecer.

When we got there it was about 4:00 in the afternoon, the sky, although with some clouds, was clear, so we could see beautiful panoramic views of Cumaná, capital of Sucre state, the first city that was founded on the mainland of South America, in the year 1515.

Cuando llegamos allá eran como las 4:00 de la tarde, el cielo aunque con algunas nubes, estaba despejado, así que pudimos ver hermosas panorámicas de Cumaná, capital del estado Sucre, primera ciudad que se fundó en tierra firme de Suramérica, en el año 1515.

The San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle, is in San Francisco neighborhood, Cerro Pan de Azúcar, to tour it there were guides available, one of them accompanied my mother, me and other people who had arrived and explained its story to us while we were looking at the different areas, which were generally very well maintained.

El Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia, está en el barrio San Francisco, cerro Pan de Azúcar, para recorrerlo había guías disponibles, uno de ellos nos acompañó a mi mamá, a mí y a otras personas que habíamos llegado y nos explicó su historia mientras íbamos viendo las diferentes áreas, que en general estaban muy bien mantenidas.

According the guide told us, it isn't known exactly when this castle was built, although some documents that date back to the time it is believed that it was between 1659 and 1686. The Spanish built it to protect themselves from the constant invasions of pirates, since its top you can see the Gulf of Cariaco and the Araya peninsula.

Según nos dijo el guía, no se sabe exactamente cuándo fue construido este castillo, aunque por algunos documentos que datan de la época se cree que fue entre 1659 y 1686. Los españoles lo levantaron para protegerse de las constantes invasiones de los piratas, desde su cima se ve el Golfo de Cariaco y la península de Araya.

Its design, the guide pointed out, is shaped like a four-pointed star, each one for a cardinal point.

Su diseño, nos señaló el guía, tiene forma de estrella de cuatro puntas, cada una para un punto cardinal.

Its thick walls are striking, with about two meters wide, in addition this military fortress has tunnels that connect it with the city and had a powerful artillery. It was in operation until the beginning of the 19th century.

Llaman la atención sus gruesas paredes, con unos dos metros de ancho, además esta fortaleza militar posee unos túneles que lo conectan con la ciudad y tenía una potente artillería. Estuvo en funcionamiento hasta principios del siglo XIX.

In one of its areas we saw very small cells with almost no light where General José Antonio Páez, important figure in the war for the independence of Venezuela, was imprisoned for a year and a half for trying to overthrow the government of José Tadeo Monagas in 1848.

En una de sus áreas vimos unas celdas muy pequeñas y casi sin luz donde estuvo preso durante un año y medio el General José Antonio Páez, figura importante en la guerra por la independencia de Venezuela, por intentar derrocar el gobierno de José Tadeo Monagas en 1848.

Although it looks very well preserved, the guide told us that due to two earthquakes, one in 1853 and another in 1929, the structure suffered a lot of damage, but it was restored in 1906 and then in 1956, since 1965 it has been a National Historic Landmark.

Aunque se ve muy bien conservado, el guía nos dijo que debido a dos terremotos, uno en 1853 y otro en 1929, la estructura sufrió muchos daños, pero fue restaurada en 1906 y luego en 1956, desde 1965 es Monumento Histórico Nacional.

After the visit with the guide, my mother and I went back to visit it to take some photos, it is undoubtedly in a privileged place and it is very pleasant to spend some time of contemplation there with the fresh sunset wind.

Después de la visita con el guía, mi mamá y yo volvimos a recorrerlo para hacer algunas fotos, sin duda está en un lugar privilegiado y es muy agradable pasar un rato de contemplación allí con el viento fresco del atardecer.
