[Eng-Esp] Excursion to the Sierra Nevada National Park: La Coromoto and Verde lagoons, Mérida - Venezuela / Excursión al Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada: Lagunas La Coromoto y Verde, Mérida – Venezuela

The excursion that I'm going to tell you about in this post is a beautiful route between the cold mountains of the Venezuelan Andes, with forests, rivers, lagoons and a spectacular view of the snow that falls on these tropical peaks.

La excursión de la que les voy a hablar en esta publicación es una belleza de ruta entre las frías montañas de los Andes venezolanos, con bosque, ríos, lagunas y una vista espectacular hacia la nieve que cae en estas cumbres tropicales.

The destination was Mérida, the state where the highest mountains in Venezuela are found, it was the first time I camped in high mountains, at more than 3,000 meters.

El destino fue Mérida, estado donde se encuentran las montañas más altas de Venezuela, fue la primera vez que acampé en alta montaña, a más de 3.000 metros.

I went with the people from the Caracas Excursionist Center (CEC) and we left Caracas at the end of the afternoon in a bus that they hired for the trip, about 8 hours later, very early in the morning, we arrived in the state of Mérida, specifically the town of Mucurubá, where a previously agreed transportation was going to take us to La Mucuy, where the entrance to the Sierra Nevada National Park is.

Me fui con la gente del Centro Excursionista Caracas (CEC) y salimos de Caracas al final de la tarde en un autobús que ellos contrataron para el viaje, unas 8 horas después, bien temprano en la mañana, llegamos al estado Mérida, específicamente al pueblo de Mucurubá, donde un transporte previamente acordado nos iba a llevar hasta La Mucuy, donde está la entrada al Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada.

In Mucurubá we had to wait longer than planned because the transport arrived long after the agreed time, more than an hour later, which caused us to arrive at La Mucuy a little before 11:00 in the morning when we were supposed to be there around 9:00 am to start the excursion with time in our favor.

En Mucurubá tuvimos que esperar más tiempo de lo planeado porque el transporte llegó mucho después de la hora acordada, más de una hora después, lo que ocasionó que llegáramos a La Mucuy un poco antes de las 11:00 de la mañana cuando debíamos estar allí como a las 9:00 am para empezar la excursión con el tiempo a nuestro favor.

Upon arriving at La Mucuy Recreational Area, we went to the Ranger post to register and request permission to camp within the Sierra Nevada National Park.

Al llegar al Área Recreativa de La Mucuy nos dirigimos al puesto de Guardaparques para registrarnos y solicitar el permiso para acampar dentro del Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada.

Now we were ready to start the walk, after a short paved stretch we went into the forest, according to a sign that I saw in the place, La Coromoto lagoon was 9 km from there.

Ahora sí, ya estábamos listos para comenzar la caminata, tras un corto tramo asfaltado nos internamos por el bosque, según un letrero que vi en el lugar, la laguna La Coromoto estaba a 9 km de ahí.

I didn't feel it much at first but once the trail got steep the weight on my back slowed me down. Fortunately, the freshness that the thick vegetation that surrounded us gave us helped me not to exhaust myself so much.

Al principio no lo sentí mucho pero una vez que el sendero se empinaba, el peso en mi espalda me hacía ir más despacio. Afortunadamente la frescura que nos daba la espesa vegetación que nos rodeaba me ayudó a no agotarme tanto.

When we had about two hours walking we arrived at a place called Mesa de Los Pinos, which is 3,000 meters high, there we made a stop to eat something and rest a bit. Until that moment I had not had any symptoms of the so-called "altitude sickness" or "moor sickness", but just in case I tried to drink water regularly, as they recommended that it helped.

Cuando teníamos unas dos horas caminando llegamos a un lugar llamado Mesa de Los Pinos, el cual está a 3.000 metros de altura, allí hicimos una parada para comer algo y descansar un poco. Hasta ese momento no había tenido ningún síntoma del llamado “mal de altura” o "mal de páramo", pero por si acaso traté de tomar agua regularmente, ya que según me recomendaron eso ayudaba.

We continued our route through the beautiful forest and about an hour later we reached a creek with super cold water, we took the opportunity to refresh ourselves, taking care not to fall because some rocks were slippery.

Seguimos nuestra ruta entre el hermoso bosque y como una hora después llegamos a una quebrada con una agua súper fría, aprovechamos para refrescarnos cuidando de no caernos porque algunas rocas estaban resbalosas.

Although we were already more than 3,000 meters high, it wasn't cold because the day was sunny, however the path became more difficult especially because of the weight I was carrying: backpack with my basic things and food, tent, water ... from there I forgot to take photos hahaha tiredness wanted to win me.

Aunque estábamos ya a más de 3.000 metros de altura no hacía frío porque el día estaba soleado, sin embargo el camino se hizo más difícil sobre todo por el peso que llevaba: mochila con mis cosas básicas y comida, carpa, agua… a partir de ahí me olvidé de tomar fotos jajaja el cansancio me quería ganar.

There came a time when I was walking and fighting so that my eyes wouldn't close, I felt drowsy, I couldn't take it anymore and I sat on a large stone to rest for a while, a companion of the group who came behind me saw me and said to me: "if you stay there you don't wake up until tomorrow, come on, up!" and she explained to me that this was one of the symptoms of altitude sickness: sleep.

Llegó un momento en el que caminaba y luchaba para que no se me cerraran los ojos, tenía como somnolencia, no podía más y me senté en una gran piedra a descansar un rato, una compañera del grupo que venía detrás de mí me vio y me dijo: “si te quedas ahí no despiertas hasta mañana, ¡vamos, arriba!” y me explicó que ese era uno de los síntomas del mal de altura: el sueño.

I drank water and with a lot of effort I continued, after about an hour I reached a part where the forest was quite closed, there I stopped for a while to observe the tall trees and a boy from another group who passed by when saw me a little tired he encouraged me, "we are close to arriving, let's go!"

Tomé agua y con mucho esfuerzo seguí, después de aproximadamente una hora llegué a una parte donde el bosque era bastante cerrado, allí me detuve un rato a observar los altos árboles y un chico de otro grupo que pasó a mi lado al verme algo cansada me dio ánimos, “¡ya falta poco, vamos!”.

I didn't believe him much because sometimes on excursions they tell you that so you don't get discouraged hahaha but this time it was true, about 20 minutes later La Coromoto lagoon finally appeared before me, I looked at the time and it was already after 6:30 in the afternoon and also there was fog. Little by little, all of us in the group arrived and we hurried to set up camp before dark.

No le creí mucho porque a veces en las excursiones te dicen eso para que no te desanimes jajaja pero en esta ocasión era cierto, como a los 20 minutos finalmente apareció ante mí la laguna La Coromoto, miré la hora y ya eran más de las 6:30 de la tarde y además había neblina. Poco a poco todos los del grupo fuimos llegando y nos apuramos para montar el campamento antes de que oscureciera.

There was already a group camping there but not in front of the lagoon, so we were lucky to be able to pitch our tents there, the place is very beautiful. It got dark quickly and with our flashlights we began to prepare dinner. Since I didn't have a camping kitchen, I had brought to eat bread, biscuits, cheese, boiled eggs, cans of tuna, long-lasting juices, sweets ... some companions of the group gave me hot chocolate they prepared that night, perfect for the cold weather. We went to sleep early because we couldn't stand the cold, I wrapped myself in my sleeping bag, despite the fatigue I couldn't sleep very well, the cold didn't leave me.

Ya había un grupo acampando allí pero no frente a la laguna, así que tuvimos la suerte de poder armar nuestras carpas ahí, el lugar es muy bonito. Oscureció rápidamente y con nuestras linternas nos pusimos a preparar la cena. Yo, como no tenía cocinita de camping, lo que había llevado para comer era que si pan, galletas, queso, huevos hervidos, latas de atún, juguitos de larga duración, chucherías… unos compañeros del grupo me brindaron esa noche chocolate caliente que prepararon, perfecto para el clima frío que había. Nos fuimos a dormir temprano porque no aguantábamos el frío, me envolví en mi sleeping, a pesar del cansancio no pude dormir muy bien, el frío no me dejó.

The next day I got up early to watch the sunrise, have an early breakfast and be ready to go to our route for the day: Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon).

Al día siguiente me levanté temprano para ver el amanecer, desayunar temprano y estar lista para salir hacia nuestra ruta del día: la Laguna Verde.

I took the opportunity to get to know the surroundings of La Coromoto lagoon, located between rocky mountains and with some muddy parts, so I was careful not to step on them, nearby I came across a stream, there you could collect water to drink.

Aproveché para conocer los alrededores de la laguna La Coromoto, situada entre rocosas montañas y con algunas partes fangosas, por lo que tuve cuidado para no pisarlas, por allí cerca me topé con un arroyo, allí se podía recoger agua para beber.

When the sun had already made its appearance and we could enjoy its warmth, the landscape of the lagoon became incredibly beautiful, the colors of the nature that surrounded us were super bright.

Cuando el sol ya había hecho su aparición y podíamos disfrutar de su calor, el paisaje de la laguna se tornó increíblemente bello, los colores de la naturaleza que nos rodeaba eran súper brillantes.

When all of us in the group were ready, we began the ascent towards Laguna Verde, more or less about 4 km from there. The good thing is that this time we were not carrying weight, just a small backpack with the basics, since our base camp was in La Coromoto.

Ya cuando todos los del grupo estuvimos listos, iniciamos el ascenso hacia la Laguna Verde, más o menos a unos 4 Km de allí. Lo bueno es que en esta ocasión no llevábamos peso, sólo un pequeño morral con lo básico, ya que nuestro campamento base era en La Coromoto.

This path has several dangerous steps, you had to walk carefully because there are many rocks and narrow paths, although while we were advancing the views were spectacular.

Este sendero tiene varios pasos peligrosos, había que caminar atentos porque hay muchas rocas y caminos estrechos, eso sí mientras íbamos avanzando las vistas eran espectaculares.

You arrive at a place that has wooden boards attached to the rocks which is known as “Puente Quemado” (Burned Bridge), then there are a lot of rocks piled up, some looser than others, so you have to be careful and then you get to huge stones known as “moraines” or “whale back”.

Se llega a un sitio que tiene unas tablas de madera sujetadas a las rocas el cual se le conoce como “Puente Quemado”, luego hay un montón de rocas amontonadas, algunas más sueltas que otras, por lo que hay que tener cuidado y después se llega a unas enormes piedras conocidas como “morrenas” o “lomo de ballena”.

The weather was perfect that day, with a clear blue sky and although we were approaching 4,000 meters high, we didn't feel cold.

El clima estaba perfecto ese día, con un limpio cielo azul y aunque nos acercábamos a los 4.000 metros de altura, no sentíamos frío.

Finally we reached a part where there was a sign that told us that we were close to our goal: Laguna Verde.

Finalmente llegamos a una parte donde estaba un letrero que nos indicaba que ya estábamos cerca de nuestra meta: la Laguna Verde.

At this point, the Humboldt peak looks much closer and more imposing, after Bolívar with 4,983 meters, it is the second highest in Venezuela with 4,942 meters. At the top there is always snow because there is La Corona glacier.

En este punto el pico Humboldt se ve mucho más cercano e imponente, después del Bolívar con 4.983 metros, es el segundo más alto de Venezuela con 4.942 metros. En su cima siempre hay nieve porque allí está el glaciar La Corona.

When you arrive at Laguna Verde the amazement is gigantic, it's a too beautiful landscape, the color of its waters of glacial origin is an emerald hue, we all fall in love with this place.

Cuando llegas a la Laguna Verde el asombro es gigantesco, es un paisaje demasiado hermoso, el color de sus aguas de origen glaciar es de un tono esmeralda, todos quedamos enamorados de este lugar.

From here you can continue the excursion to the Humboldt and Bolívar peaks on a route known as “the crossing”, for this you need special equipment such as ice axes, a helmet and clothing for very low temperatures, among others.

Desde aquí se puede seguir la excursión hasta los picos Humboldt y Bolívar en una ruta conocida como “la travesía”, para esto se necesitan equipos especiales como piolets, casco y ropa para muy bajas temperaturas, entre otros.

We stayed a couple of hours admiring the wonderful view, exploring the surroundings, resting and eating what we had brought and at 4:00 in the afternoon we started back, we had to go at a fast pace so that the night didn't catch us.

Nos quedamos un par de horas admirando la maravillosa vista, explorando los alrededores, descansando y comiendo lo que habíamos llevado y como a las 4:00 de la tarde emprendimos el regreso, debíamos ir a un ritmo rápido para que no nos agarrara la noche.

Upon arriving at our base camp in La Coromoto lagoon, a boy from the group went to take a bath in its cold waters with the big mistake of leaving his clothes on, after a short while he had hypothermia, fortunately he changed his wet clothes quickly, wrapped himself in a blanket and returned to normal.

Al llegar a nuestro campamento base en la laguna La Coromoto, un chico del grupo se fue a dar un baño en sus frías aguas con el gran error de meterse con la ropa, al poco rato tenía como hipotermia, afortunadamente se cambió rápido la ropa mojada, se envolvió en una manta y se le pasó.

The next morning we get up early to set up tents, collect our things and start the walk back to La Mucuy.

A la mañana siguiente nos levantamos temprano para desarmar carpas, recoger nuestras cosas y comenzar la caminata de regreso a La Mucuy.

In about three hours we were already arriving little by little at La Mucuy Recreational Area, there is a river and a restaurant, some of the group took a dip, I just refreshed myself a little, the water was very cold hahaha.

En unas tres horas ya estábamos llegando poco a poco al Área Recreativa de La Mucuy, allí hay un río y restaurante, algunas personas del grupo se dieron un chapuzón, yo sólo me refresqué un poco, estaba muy fría el agua jajaja.

Then we went to the terminal in the city of Mérida where our bus was waiting for us to return to Caracas.

Después nos fuimos hasta el terminal de la ciudad de Mérida donde nos esperaba nuestro autobús para regresar a Caracas.
