A visit to my hometown, San Luis Potosí, S.L.P. Mexico [ENG/ESP]

Last week, a group of acquaintances came for a visit to the town I live, the capital city of San Luis Potosí state, called San Luis Potosí too, in the very center of Mexico.

I've been living here my whole life, but it's been a very long time since the last time I visited city's downtown, I felt a tourist while walking with the group and telling some of the story of each place.

La semana pasada un grupo de conocidos vinieron de visita a la ciudad donde vivo, la ciudad capital del estado de San Luis Potosí, llamada San Luis Potosí igual, en el centro de México.

He vivido aquí toda mi vida, pero ha pasado mucho tiempo desde la última vez que visité el centro de la ciudad, me sentí como turista caminando con el grupo y contando algo de historia de cada sitio.

Our first stop was the Ipiña building, built in early 1900's, it took almost a decade to finish it, the original idea was by a man called José Ipiña who wanted a building similar to those in Paris, the building worked as living place, it held cultural events and had comercial stores. Also it's known because of a legend that says a witch lived there for some time, she was being hunted and escaped by drawing a chariot on one of the walls and disappearing in it.

Nuestra primer parada fue el edificio Ipiña, construído a principios de la década de 1900, tomó casi una década en construir, la idea original era de un hombre llamado José Ipiña que quería un edificio similar a los de París, el edificio funcionó como vivienda, sitio de eventos culturales y comercios. También es conocido por una leyenda que dice que una bruja solía vivir ahí por un tiempo, estaba siendo buscada y escapó al dibujar un carruaje en un muro y desaparecer en el.

The Ipiña building is located in Fundadores square, where a statue can be seen.

That sculpture is a representation of "San Luis, King of France", he was Luis IX.
When gold and silver were found in this lands, miners called the place San Luis Potosí in honor of that king.

El Edificio Ipiña está ubicado en la plaza de Fundadores donde una estatua puede ser vista.

Esa escultura es una representación de San Luis Rey de Francia, fue Luis IX.
Cuando oro y plata fueron encontrados en las tierras, los mineros llamaron el sitio San Luis Potosí en honor a ese rey.

Most part of city's downtown keeps it's colonial style, several places remain as they were built, although its interior has changed over the pass of years.

This next picture shows what once was one of the main theaters in the city, called Manuel José Othón theater, first opened in 1914 and offered plays, movies, reunion center, conferences and general entertainment.
Currently it's a comercial place called technology plaza, where you can find several gadgets and cellphone and gaming accessories.

La siguiente foto muestra lo que una vez fue uno de los principales teatros en la ciudad, llamado Teatro Manuel José Othón, inaugurado en 1914 y ofreciendo obras, películas, centro de convenciones, conferencias y entretenimiento en general.
Actualmente es un centro comercial llamado Plaza de la tecnología, donde puedes encontrar varios dispositivos y accesorios para celular y jugabilidad.

The next stop was the "Arms Square" known for hosting the government palace and a kiosk in the middle, also another statue known as "pigeon's man" representing an old man who could always be seen feeding pigeons in the square. Also the main Cathedral is in that square.

La siguiente parada fue la Plaza de Armas conocida por ser el lugar donde se localiza el Palacio de Gobierno y un kiosco en el centro, también hay otra escultura conocida como "El hombre de las palomas" representando a un hombre que siempre era visto alimentando a las palomas de la plaza. También la Catedral principal está en esa plaza.

The Cathedral was built in 1730, well originally a smaller one was built in 1593 but in 1670 was demolished in order to build a bigger one.

La Catedral fue construida en 1730, bueno originalmente una mas pequeña se hizo en 1593 pero en 1670 fue demolida para construir una más grande.

Next we have the "Peace Theatre" built around 1890, currently still it hosts plays and conferences, it's been preserved over the years in it's original form outside and inside.

Siguiente tenemos el Teatro de la Paz, construído al rededor de 1890, actualmente aun se presentan obras y conferencias, ha sido preservado a través de los años en su forma original por dentro y por fuera.

A couple of blocks away there's a hallway called "Saint Francis Alley" but it's mostly known as the "hippie alley" because as you can see in the picture, you can find several tents where you can buy handcrafts, and years ago all the sellers there really had a hippie look, you feel the relaxing vibe just by walking there.

A un par de cuadras está un callejón llamado Callejón San Francisco, pero es mayormente conocido como el callejón de los hippies, porque como pueden ver en la foto, pueden encontrar varios puestos en los cuales venden artesanías, y hace años los vendedores realmente tenían el estilo hippie, sientes la vibra relajada solo caminando por ahí.

And finally we visited Aranzazu Square, that place has been the host of several music festivals, plays and cultural events, it's smaller compared to other squares but the space in the middle is wide open, unlike others that have sculptures or gardens, this one only has one fountain in the middle, which is why it's perfect to place chairs or even blankets on the ground to enjoy a spectacle.

Y finalmente visitamos la Plaza Aranzazú, este sitio ha sido sede de varios festivales de música, obras y eventos culturales; es más pequeña en comparación a otras plazas pero el espacio en el centro es muy amplio, no como otras que tienen esculturas o jardines en medio, esta solo tiene una fuente, lo que hace el sitio perfecto para colocar sillas o incluso mantas en el suelo para disfrutar un espectáculo.

And those were just one of the city's landmarks, still there is a lot more to show but on that visit we only went to these places, I hope you liked this brief tour through parts of city's downtown.

Y esos fueron solo algunos de los puntos de referencia de la ciudad, aún hay mucho más por ver pero en esa visita solo fuimos a esos lugares. Espero les haya gustado este breve tour por unas partes del centro de la ciudad.
