One sunset, two sides of England

avatar

Sunset is one of my favourite time of the day, and with the days still relatively long in UK, I'm trying to get out to see more in case Covid kills me. Just joking!

Living on the west coast in UK, we get some of the best sunset views. I'm biased with my home town so of course, I'm going we say that. Last week I went out for a stroll after dinner. There was still plenty of people on the seafront, many like me who were there to capture the best moment of the day. Even the seagulls were there with us.

THE WEST

Yesterday I went over to my brother's. He lives near me, a few miles along the coast, next to a golf course. After dinner, we went out for a very nice walk. In order to get to the coast, we had to walk through the golf course. They have public footpaths running through it. Luckily at that time of the day, all the golfers had gone home for the day and we didn't have to worry about getting hit by a ball. It's not often non-golfers can roam freely on a golf course, though we were careful not to tread on the green too much.

It was really windy on the golf course as it was literally on the coast. I can imagine how challenging it would be to play here. For us non-golfers, the only problem I had was a slight headache because it was so windy. But that was all forgotten when we got to the other side of the course and saw the sunset. I am never one good with words, so I'm just going to share a couple of photos with you. Perhaps now you will agree that we have some of the best sunset views on the west of England 🙂

THE EAST

On Hive, and around the world we reference time to GMT. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. Britain built it's first Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London in 1675 and that location became the national time system for the country. By 1884 it was adopted worldwide as the International Date Line and all time zones around the world references to GMT.

Greenwich is famous for many other things as well. The Cutty Sark on the right is one of them. She's a clipper built in 1869, one of the last to be built during the 19th century and one of the fastest during that period. Back in those days, time was of essence to transport tea around the world and Cutty Sark spent the first part of her life transporting tea from China back to England. Today, she is a national monument and has been restored and converted to a museum. She sits proudly by the River Thames, very fitting for a ship that was an important part of Britain's naval history.

The green dome building next to the Cutty Sark is one of my favourite. Not so much the building itself, which is still very remarkable. But what it leads to. The building is the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, a pedestrian tunnel that runs below the Thames River. I'm going to talk more about this in a few days time.

Panning across the west, Canary Wharf is on the other side of the Thames. This is one of London's financial centre, and along with the City of London, they make up one the world's main financial centre.

By now it was just gone 8pm, the golden ball sat behind the London skyline across the Thames River. The Shard can be seen on the right, its pointed top piercing into the sun releasing a ball of fire that flashes onto the Thames.

Twenty minutes later the golden ball had gradually disappeared hiding behind the London skyline.

Interesting! I still prefer the sunset from the west because of the freedom and lack of buildings and people :D

Awesome post matey. I was born in London and part raised in Blackheath in part before we moved over to the states. You got some cool shots of town and the Thames at sunset. I like the sunset ones of our area as well. Up voted and rehived. :)
