World War II Memorial, Ryozen Kannon, Kyoto, Japan (3 pics)
A huge statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, also known as Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, is the central feature of the war memorial commemorating the dead of the Pacific War.
Since 1955, the 500 tons and 24 meter high statue has stood at the entrance of the temple to honor the dead of WWII.
The temple is tiny, but sends a strong message about the futility of war.
Japanese losses are listed in this temple, there are tablets with the names of more than 2 million Japanese who died during World War II; soldiers, allies and prisoners.
Another strong symbol present in this temple, an altar in which we can find soil from all the cemeteries of the allies of this conflict.
The Goddess of Mercy, who help all who suffer in this world is a wise choice for the image of this temple .
It is important to commemorate all these deaths, it is important not to forget what happened and especially not to start again in the future.
