Market Friday: plants market at night,

(Edited)

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by our kind and generous @dswigle. Recently I was invited to join a Buddhist merit making ceremony at the big family house with all the relatives. After the ceremony, we decided to visit the evening market for plants at Chatuchak Market nearby. We got a lift to the plant market as the journey took only five minutes by car; the road was empty of traffic! I have never been to a night market at Chatuchak market before. Walking around the market in the evening was a very good idea as the weather was more pleasant without the hot sunshine.

This market is known as Chatuchak Weekend market which is the biggest market in Bangkok and Thailand. During weekends, there would be at least 9000 vendors selling things from household gadgets, furniture, antiques to pet animals from kittens to gold fish. This market is a well known tourists’ attraction where vendors from Laos and some African countries often came to buy goods in bulk to be exported to their countries.

This weekend market was originally established at Sanam Luang, the big green area in front of the Grand Palace where the Emerald Buddha is the main tourist attraction. The first weekend market was set up there in 1948. The weekend market was moved to the south side of Chatuchak garden on the other end of Bangkok in 1978. The reason was to create a recreational public park for people to relax during weekends. Many years ago, this small public park was where kids could hire bicycles for a day and there were vendors selling kites for families to play with their children. The weekend market lasted about thirty years at Sanam Luang.

The present day Chatuchak Weekend market has been at the Chatuchak garden for about 43 years. During weekdays, this market turns into evening plants’ market with hundreds of vendors among all kinds of big and small plants to big trees. The plants market is open from Tuesday to Thursday, from late afternoon till 9pm. I was very glad that my friend persuaded me to visit this market. We had over an hour’s walk at the market and I did buy for jasmine plants for my garden. We need more white flowers to place at the Buddha’s shrine on Buddhist holy days.

To my surprise, most of the vendors there were selling all kinds of cacti from very tiny ones to two meters high cacti. The varieties and choices on offer were amazing and beyond my imagination. I had no idea before that Thai people have become very keen on growing cacti and many young people are crazy about cacti. I used to have a cactus when I was at school but I gave it to my friend before I went to study overseas. I think I am now more keen on fragrant flowers and fruit trees.

I was so glad all the vendors allowed me to take as many photos as I desired, though my iPhone was not suitable for night time photography. Most vendors were very friendly and willing to chat with us. These people must have lots of patience as they have managed to keep so many slow growing cacti. I would not spend so much money and energy on plants that cannot feed people! They would not be very practical during famine or world war! (Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst).

The display of all cacti was very impressive and attractive; I was very tempted to get half a dozen for my veranda. Some cacti were very big and expensive. I was amazed to know that people were willing to spend a lot of money on an auspiciously cactus which would bring them good luck and fortune. The Thai name of cactus means diamond! Some people believe that some cactus would protect people in the house from black magic and bad vibes. We even have a handbook for planting a particular tree on a certain day at the specific direction. It seems Thai people are either very psychic or superstitious on so many aspects of life. But then some old wisdom could be practical or useful in some situation.

Thank you very much! I regretted the new update!
Could I go back to the previous version?!
The font has become much smaller on my iPhone! The spacing between the two sentences is too narrow! My eyes are very strained!

The pop up messages about voting is superfluous and wasting of energy! Too much distraction!

I really cannot read these small prints any more!

The new added design is not essential or relevant to blogging!

Could I have the link to get back to the old version?!
Very bad for my eyes.

Which version you were using previously? We didn't make any changes on fonts... Could it be you made iOS upgrade or some changes in your device?

The pop up messages about voting is superfluous and wasting of energy! Too much distraction!

What do you mean, please elaborate?! Upvoting was always slider popup.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I didn’t upgrade my iPhone. I haven’t updated ecency dapp for several months now.

That pop up us about getting voted upon by someone. Each time there’s an upvote, there’s a banner pop up. I couldn’t stop the notifications appearing.

Thank you. I had downloaded an older dapp but I couldn’t find my previous one which has the best design. It’s very inconvenient and I may have to find something with bigger fonts.

Ok, let us try to improve font sizes to bigger in upcoming release. Thank you for details about popup message, you can disable notifications from Settings page for vote and it won't show up, we will see how we can improve that. Stay tuned for upcoming release, we will increase font sizes a bit. Any suggestions what pages to prioritize?

I have tried to use this new dapp with great difficulty!

The new photo upload is much worse and cumbersome! This is a complete failure in design and understanding of the way we upload photos.

There are bugs around the preview function.

The comment section keeps disappearing.

The old dapp is more efficient and economical in terms of time and energy! Your design add ons remind me of Thai civil servants putting new street signs which fail to communicate their messages to drivers. People just think more is better!

This has put me off posting during the past few days. Please try harder before you drive away regular bloggers. It’s quite disappointing.

More changes, nothing is better than before.

Some cactuses are edible such as prickly pears, Pitaya, and Nopales cactus used for preparing special tacos. 😁

I think those young people like cactus because they take little care and they still seem to flourish. :))

Night markets seem to be the way to go, with less people and no hot sunshine beating down on you. I cannot believe such a huge market with just cactus! Who are these people that buy these plants that will bite you back and take over a piece of your yard if you plant them outdoors?

I agree with you. I am more fruit and flowers in this stage of life. I love to be surrounded by this kind of beauty! I find that you are right about many of the Thai people being superstitious, but, like many cultures, these things have been handed down for so long, they are passed down without challenging the source.

Thank you so much for your participation! It is always an honor to have you! #MarketFriday has survived the pandemic and has been presented in so many unusual ways, along with more common ones. This, of course, adds more charm to the mixing bowl. The challenge points out our differences, but, then, it also shows many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. We embrace each other as humans.

I love the experience of it all. I appreciate the love and support given to #MarketFriday! Thank you! Truly! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in is seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this! I am so happy to see you here! I hope you have a fabulous day! Hive on!!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?

Thank you so much for your work on our behalf. You have brought smiles to so many faces during this uncertain and fast-changing time. The one downside to the night market was that the lighting was patchy. Some shops were still closed so there were some corners in darkness. I should visit the market before sunset or bring a lamp along! LoL

Have a nice day.

Yes! Before sunset seems safer to me. :))

Thank you so much for being part of #MarketFriday and I really liked the night markets you have there!

OHhhhh I have such a great memories of this market. The first day we met our friends that live there, we went for a picnic at Chatuchuk park then they took us to the Market. It was so exciting. We didn't buy anything but my friend wanted an aloe vera plant so we probably found it there. We had a place around thirty minutes walk away for our last month. The last week before we left Thailand, we went back to the market to look for shoes and it had closed down. I am really happy it's open again.

The cacti are so incredibly beautiful. Thanks for the tour!

My wife loves cacti. We have a lot of them growing on our windowsill. Those that are very long, more than a meter tall

Yes, it is. We have 2 dogs. They can't climb on windowsills like cats. Cacti are not dangerous to them
