Looking at street art in New Road, เดินเที่ยวถนนเจริญกรุง

New Road or Charoengkrung Road was the first road built according to Western standard of construction. This road is now over a hundred years old while the old shop-houses along this road are over eighty years old. This area of New Road or Charoenkrung Road used to be the most modern hub of Western companies and embassies, luxurious shops and trendy jewelry shops including famous restaurants. Nowadays, the old charm of old houses and dilapidated colonial style buildings attract visitors to explore the alleys and piers by the river. The short walk from Robinson mall near Sathorn Pier would take me pass several old shops: eighty years old bakery, coffee shop, sweet shops, Thai foot massage and more than ten Indian shops selling crystals and jewelries.

This old road always bring back lots of memories of my school days at the famous Catholic school beside the Chao Phraya River. There are three Catholic schools behind New Road. This just reflects the past glory of this area where the majority of rich families sent their children to the top and most expensive Western schools in Bangkok. We could see the new entrance to one of the old schools from the main road.

During this pandemic, most people are afraid of crowded places so they don’t travel much, roads become very quiet during weekends.

The Gem Tower used to be a very busy hub for merchants from South African countries, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan to negotiate on gem stones, whole sale silver jewelries and expensive semi precious stones.

Some old shops still keep the old wooden carvings which were very sought after items twenty years ago. Most Indian tailor shops have all moved away. This area used to be where visitors could get tailored made woolen suits in less than three days.

It took me fifteen minutes to reach the General Post Office which used to be the old English Council building. This design of this building was influenced by the German architecture and Art Deco; designed by two Thai architects and was under a German engineer’ supervision. King Rama V established the postal and telegraph office in 1926 at a small mansion near Chinatown. The demand for postal service had given an impetus to build the first biggest Western designed building in Bangkok as the show piece of architecture in Siam at that time. Most of the Royal princes went to Germany for their education so they were admires of big buildings in German and Italian cities. Hence the General Post Office looks more German influenced than the usual Thai style architecture. The two big Garudas were hand made by the best art students under the supervision of a famous Italian professor who headed the oldest Faculty of Arts in Siam. The old Siamese really knew how to take the best of Western wisdom to enable creative and useful projects for the good of the country.

There are stories about the two pink Garudas during the Second World War who kept this big building from being bombed to pieces. Local people saw two Garudas flying high in the air and used their wings to push the bombs away from the building. Several bombs dropped on the ground without going off. Thai people believe that Garudas are magical and mystical being living in higher dimension. They are a kind of angels who are assigned certain duties on earth to protect special people and places.

The building was closed on that day so I could not take photos of the interior design which has been renovated several years ago. Nowadays the General Post Office building has been transformed into exhibition center and resource center for TCDC (Thailand Creative and Design Center) which has the biggest collection of books and resources on design, arts and architecture. There is still a small section of postal service on the ground floor. The whole building seems like a living museum to me. My destination was the small alley next to this building, Soi Charoenkrung 32. I wanted to check out street art or graffiti in this side alley.

เมื่อเร็วๆนี้เราไปเดินเล่น แถวถนนเจริญกรุงเพื่อไปถ่ายรูปบ้านเรือนเก่าๆ และสภาพถนนในยามซบเซาเพราะเราคิดว่าในอนาคตอะไรก็คงเปลี่ยนแปลงไปได้อีก เราต้องการเก็บภาพความทรงจำในอดีต สถานที่แถวนี้เคยเป็นถิ่นของเราเพราะ เราเคยเรียนหนังสือที่โรงเรียนแคทอลิกท์ที่อยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยานั่นเอง เราเดินจากห้างโรบินสันไปเรื่อย เก็บภาพตึกระฟ้าที่มุมถนนสีลม ตามทางก็ยังมีร้านเก่าแก่เหลืออยู่บ้าง เช่นร้านขายขนมปังที่เขาทำขายมาตั้งแต่รุ่นปู่ย่า ร้านกาแฟ ร้านนวดแผนโบราณ ร้านขายขนมหวานไทยโบราณก็มีสองสามร้าน

เราเดินไปตามถนนเจริญกรุงที่แทบจะไม่มีรถสัญจรไปมา เพราะเป็นช่วงวันหยุดสุดสัปดาห์ ร้านค้าปิดกันส่วนใหญ่ เราดูถนนที่ว่างเปล่า ตึกออฟฟิศที่เงียบกริบ ทำให้นึกถึงสมัยก่อนที่คนเดินกันพลุกพล่าน ร้านขายหินและพลอยก็เต็มไปด้วยลูกค้า ศูนย์อัญมณีก็มีพ่อค้าชาวต่างชาติ เช่น ชาวอินเดีย แอฟริกา ปากีสถาน อัฟกานิสถาน มาติดต่อซื้อขายพลอยกันหนาแน่น ถนนสายนี้ไม่เหมือนสมัยก่อนแล้ว เราเดินไปให้ถึงตึกไปรษณีย์กลางที่เก่าแก่อายุแปดสิบปีแล้ว

เราเดินประมาณสิบห้านาทีก็ถึงตึกไปรษณีย์กลาง ที่ตรงนี้เคยเป็นสถานกงสุลอังกฤษมาก่อน ในหลวงรัชกาลที่5 ทรงตั้งกรมไปรษณีย์โทรเลขในปี 2426(1883) อาคารแรกอยู่ที่คลองโอ่งอ่าง ต่อมามีความจำเป็นต้องขยายที่ทำการเพราะคนมีความต้องการใช้บริการไปรษณีย์เพิ่มขึ้นมาก จึงได้มีการออกแบบสร้างอาคารแบบตะวันตกขนาดใหญ่ เพื่อใข้เป็นที่ทำการของกรมไปรษณีย์และเป็นหน้าตาให้กับประเทศด้วย การออกแบบเป็นแบบคล้ายอาคารสมัยใหม่ในเยอรมัน และแบบอลังการศิลป์ หรืออาร์ทเดโค โดยมีนายจิตรเสน อภัยวงศ์และพระราชสาโรชรัตนนิมมานต์ (สาโรช สุขยางค์) เป็นนักออกแบบ และมีชาวเยอรมันเป็นวิศวกรคุมการก่อสร้าง มีการเปิดทำการในปี 2483-2528 จึงมีการย้ายสำนักงานใหญ่ไปที่ศูนย์ไปรษณีย์กรุงเทพที่หลักสี่

รูปสลักครุฑสีชมพูเป็นผลงานของศาสตราจารย์ ศิลป์ พีระศรี ที่สร้างขึ้นในปี 2486 ตรงกลางลานมีรูปปั้นของสมเด็จพระราชปิตุลาบรมพงศาภิมุข เจ้าฟ้าภานุรังษีสว่างวงศ์ กรมพระยาภานุพันธุวงศ์วรเดช ผู้สร้างการไปรษณีย์โทรเลขของไทย ปัจจุบันในอาคารมีการให้บริการไปรษณีย์ที่ชั้นล่าง ส่วนที่เหลือเป็นสถานที่จัดนิทรรศการ และด้านหลังเป็นห้องสมุดด้านการออกแบบ และศูนย์สร้างสรรค์และการออกแบบ หรือทีซีดีซีนั่นเอง แต่จุดหมายของเราคือ ซอยเจริญกรุง32 ที่อยู่ข้างๆอาคารเก่าแก่แห่งนี้ เราต้องการไปดูภาพศิลปะตามกำแพงในซอยนั่นเอง เราก็เดินเลี้ยวซ้ายเข้าไปในซอยอีกสามนาทีก็เริ่มเห็นภาพตามกำแพงที่เขียนขึ้นในปี 2556 และ 2559

These graffitis and street art were the results of two art festivals which took place in this district in 2013 and 2016. Several famous foreign and local artists were invited to participate in these events. The intention was to revive the old district of Bangkok by transforming it into a creative and artistic hub of Bangkok.

So, Charoenkrung 32 has become well known for chic coffee shops, art galleries, alternative designers’ clothes shops. An old warehouse nearby has been transformed into an artistic community center with restaurants and coffee shops with exhibition spaces for paintings and photography.

There’s a small restaurant at the end of this alley; this restaurant is by the river side so this should be rather nice during sunset. I do hope you’ll drop by this place one day.
