Almost Married, Last Steps Until Suriname Exodus Complete, What Country Shall We Escape To?

Unable to return to Cambodia or immigrate to the USA, and life in Suriname nearly impossible, we are ready to fly soon.

🧳 Migrants Ready To Roll 🗺️

IMG_1133.JPG

We've taken the kids out of public school, gone to the immigration bureau to request a marriage in Suriname, and are now searching for a host country that will take us. The cost of living in Suriname is ever-increasing, and access to our funds comes with extreme penalties, and at times is not even possible.

IMG_1134.JPG

We are now too far from the school to make the roundtrip walk twice a day and still fulfill all our other daily duties, but they have continued homeschooling. I have no regrets, as they weren't even studying 5 days a week like in pre-corona times anyways.

We are tired of living from Western Union, which now is barely even possible as there is barely any foreign currency left in the country, tired of feeling like unwanted migrants, and we know we will never feel at home here. We are now tying up all of our loose ends here to give us a good start in whatever place we may end up.

🛃 Cambodia, USA Not Possible 🚫

It's now just as tough as for me to return to Cambodia as it for @sreypov and the @kidsisters to immigrate and/or travel to Trump-land, but I feel both countries have closed the door on us for a good reason, and I think the reason is we are destined to explore new lands for better opportunities.

docs.JPG

We finally have translated the documents required to get married into Dutch, so now we can get married here, get some police background checks, translate everything back to English or another language for use abroad, and then we are free to fly. Now that there are a few countries that will take us and that we can afford to live in, we are seeing light at the end of tunnel.

🌍 Countries Of Interest 🌏

Considering we are a mixed nationality family, wherever we go has to offer visa-on-arrival for both of us with chance of a self-sponsored residency visa conversion without leaving the country. Also, the country needs to have a US Embassy that offers immigration services, as there is a small chance I might be able to give my family American passports before the @KidSisters turn 18.

We may end up staying in the country if we like and we can't obtain a USA immigration platform. Likely it will be a year and half long stay awaiting spousal immigration to the USA, so I would like to get you Hivers' opinions on the countries we've narrowed our search to.

🤷 Thoughts? 🙏

If you are from any of these countries or have traveled in them, I'd love to hear some feedback, especially about the cost of living, ability to live a simple life, friendliness of the locals, etc. I know quite a lot about Nepal and Ethiopia, but Mauritius is a bit of a mystery, and I have only one friend who's been there.

🙏 THANKS FOR READING 🙏

I would like to get to the USA one day for the passports and so my families could meet each other, but not for the food, culture, or way of life. I was detailing cars and cutting grass when I left, living in a trailer waiting for a tornado to take me, no health insurance, no way to live.

Americans where I'm from just don't travel abroad. However, I do wish they could understood how much easier it would be for them to visit us than for us to visit them. !ENGAGE 10

and access to our funds comes with extreme penalties, and at times is not even possible.

This is a big part of the reason why owning cryptocurrency is bothersome and seen by some as a scam. Investing is a one way street and their is no means to get profits back without jumping through a bunch of rings or going to a better structured country.

Same goes for foreign currency transactions. And if you do get an incoming transaction the bank fees or that of western union is killing. I use to do freelance work for someone in the Netherlands and I had to let him give the money to a family member there, who in turn physically brought it to me when on vacation here.

I hope you guys find what you are looking for on your current journey. Haven't been to any one of those countries, so I can't help with info on them. I would like to go to Nepal one day.

Yeah, times are tough, luckily we our home is 4 suitcases, so if better opportunities present themselves elsewhere, we can leave in a flash. We're beginning to tie up loose ends before we head for greener pastures. I have been to Sikkim and Northeast India, both very similar to Nepal, and I have many Nepalese friends in Cambodia, so I think I have a clear picture of what we would need to do to flourish there. There are plenty of lowlying areas with a climate similar to Cambodia. !ENGAGE 70

Good to hear marriage is on the cards very soon. Once you get that sorted out, I'm sure you have much more options open to you. Maybe you can even consider Taiwan , they always need English teachers, and it's nearer to home for sreypov as well, there is quite a large SEA community there.

For Mauritius, @dkkarolien is your girl. Try touching base with her.

Cambodian citizens aren't eligible for visa-on-arrival in Taiwan, and I have no education, and Taiwan generally has standards like S. Korea, TEFL and Bachelor's Degree required. Any country that puts up an immediate visa barrier isn't a country we are interested in.

Mauritius has a very appealing visa policy for people from developing countries, but I need to confirm some cost-of-living rumors I've heard. I will give @dkkarolien a follow. Thanks for stopping by. !ENGAGE 35

Lots of Taiwan cram schools ie private tuition schools don't need formal teaching qualifications and I believe there's always a big demand. If you manage to get a job (possible in some cases before you arrive I hear), you can get an ARC (Alien resident certificate) and your family can get an accompanying ARC. Check if out if you haven't explored it yet.

I'll have to look into it a little more. I love being self-employed so much that I'm not sure if I could go back to working for a boss. Taiwan's lack of visa-on-arrival for Cambodians turns us off too. I really miss running a sidewalk cafe, teaching English/Khmer in rented rooms, and all those various self-employed hustles we used to have.

The high cost of living and modern way of life in Taiwan have always kept me away from doing much research. Ethiopia has long been a place deep in my heart that I've wanted to migrate to, but the long-term visas seem a bit more intimidating than Nepal and Mauritius. !ENGAGE 40

I wish I could help you. I knew a user from Nepal but he's been inactive for a year or so. Anyway, I wish you luck as you need it.
P.S. Maybe you can look at pinmapple to see if you can find people from these countries.

Yes, there are lots of Hivers from India and Bangladesh, but not so many from Nepal. Pinmapple is not a bad idea, as there often posts from locals and foreign residents as well, not just travelers. !ENGAGE 20

What a lovely family. You guys really inspire me. I'm so excited for your new life and can't wait to see where you go. I don't know about those countries but I personally wouldn't hesitate on Mauritius.

Fellow hiver @progressivechef lives there and it looks really lovely and like paradise. Good luck to you and your family.

Africa continent sounds very good in terms of future find famine;- new agricultural belt has recently been established. There’ll be jobs and lots of opportunities and economic growth during the start of the Mini ice age!

How about Chad or Sudan?! But I have no idea about the politics there.

Good luck.

I'm not sure about any other east-African nations, but I know several people who have lived and worked in Ethiopia, and I have a rough idea of how to handle the long-term visa procedures. The best part is Ethiopia has Piaggio Ape tuk-tuks, so at least my family could have affordable transport there. !ENGAGE 30

I haven't even heard of Mauritius, although it looks beautiful!
It must feel good to have other options open to you!

Give thanks @porters, we are beginning to feel optimistic again. It is good to have a few options, much better than no options, which were the previous circumstances we were in. Sorry for the late reply, it's obvious I missed a ton of comments on this post.

T - 10 days til liftoff!!! Thanks for the good vibes. Unfortunately we can only transit Schengen countries, so Holland and the rest of the EU will never be in the cards, but we do like the simple but exciting life in developing countries. Sorry for the late reply, not like myself, I must be scatterbrained lately.

Glad you seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. I have never been to any of those countries but on a whim I'd say Ethiopia was meant for you guys, second would be Nepal as I see it has similarities to Cambodia.. but what do I know. Hopefully you will be able to get the US documents for everyone so there are more options.

Tired of feeling like unwanted migrants

That is how most foreigners feel in Japan after some time. Especially the ones that try their best to fit in.

I-thiopia has definitely been calling a long time, and there is even a group of Cambodians there working for the GNZ, a German organization for which I have been a Cambodian/English translator. If I can learn Amharic, then I could be a very valuable employee there. I imagine Japan is a tough place to be fully accepted, if it ever happens at all, but challenges make life worth living. !ENGAGE 40

Big congrats to you buddy.

I guess Suriname just isn't in the cards. In over a year we haven't even been able to find affordable and comfortable housing. I don't know how to make a life if I can't even rest easy at night. It's weird to leave a decent standard of living in a poor country to live in poverty in wealthy country, and I can see why my Cambodian family can't make any sense of why we did this. At least there were plenty of life lessons learned, and our daughters now have a clearer understanding of western behavior and culture. !ENGAGE 20
