Char'd STEAK Anyone?!!

I had a little time to kill on Tuesday, so whilst Jude kicked ball with his team, I headed down to central Hermanus, which as I have mentioned in previous posts - is about a 20 minute drive from where we stay. It is a beautiful little town really and although there are parts of it which appear pretty much the same as any other town - most of it is really eclectic and artistic, scattered with cobble stone roads, art galleries, old fishing boats turned into planters and of course the views... which are beyond sensational!

There is a permanent market located right in the centre of town and alongside it are several restaurants and other shops. One which I have poked my nose into a few times already but had never been to was Char'd. I had a good giggle to myself as I just linked their website because I read their intro line and they LITERALLY used the two EXACT words I did when describing it to someone during a conversation the other day - those being, industrial meets steampunk.

Char'd may be a steakhouse, but definitely not ordinary in ANY WAY! Whilst most steak places tend to put most of the focus on tender and juicy traditional cuts - Char'd has hopped outside the box completely by putting most of their emphasis on really unusual and innovative cuts - although, having said that... they do still offer all the traditional stuff!

I was there around lunch time on a Tuesday so understandably they were not at all busy, which I actually prefer. As you enter the restaurant, you will quickly discover that they have made adequate compensation for the times of day when things are not humming quite as much as others. You are greeted with, well - not exactly a teddy bears picnic... but pretty darn close, lol!

On the way to be seated, I have to admit I was completely derailed by their fridge! I realise that this may not appeal to everyone, but hey - I am South African and I pretty sure it is against the law not to be a meat lover... but that aside - I just REALLY loved the dimension it added to the place as a whole. There is nothing more satisfying than visiting an establishment where you know great pride in the quality of their food as well as it's preparation... and something like this, is a massive "real deal" statement!

Once seated, the waitress came to give a full run down of precisely what cuts of meat they had available that day and although I did not end up having a steak... I know (kill me now!) it was still awesome to get educated on all these REALLY unusual cuts! She was just such a fabulous waitress too and we ended up getting into quite lengthy conversation about all sorts of things!

It was late afternoon and I was not really looking to stuff myself, although admittedly... I would LOVE to have experienced at least one of the more unusual cuts of meat. She explained that one of the objectives the brainchildren behind Char'd hold... is to make use of as MUCH of the carcass as possible, so whilst those certain cuts may not be quite as tender - they are actually FAR tastier, but they try to find a good balance between the two by encouraging the servings "rare".

Simple, Innovative, Elegant and Flavourful Food.

Sure, I only ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and a chicken liver starter but even that was absolutely AMAZING! Traditionally, chicken livers are served quite spicy with something like chipotle or the like... and one of the reasons I often gravitate to the livers as a "semi-main" is because they are surprisingly filling as well as delicious!

Their chicken livers were Sherry Flambeéd with maple bacon, mustard cream and pecorino. It was nothing short of heavenly! Definitely "right up there" on my list of "best served chicken livers evaaaar".

It was a REALLY awesome spot to kill a couple of hours and I would love to go back and actually do what I was supposed to do in the first place... EAT A DAMN STEAK!!! haha! Not sure if they are a franchise, but I sure am glad they are close by! I will definitely be paying them a visit again some time soon and hopefully, next time will get to enjoy endless conversation from across the table.

Oh man! If only it was on this side of the planet. I love steampunk and I love steak. Seriously. I used to go to the Steampunk World's Faire before... things went south, and I loved it. If they had high quality steak there too??? Man...

Yeah, have to say - I have been to many steakhouses over the years but this one just had that "extra" element.... you know?!

My kind of steakhouse!
Pinot Noir is all that I order.
How were the chicken livers?

Pinot Noir is the best!!! Although I will settle for a decent Merlot too. The chicken livers were fantastic!

Hmmm... I have not had chicken livers for a while now.
Onions, chili, garlic, tomatoes, simmered in chicken broth... yum!

This looks like a legit place for a meal and I did some quick conversions on the prices in that menu, into AUD, and it looks like pretty good value too. A good find here I'd say, nice spot for a meal and some conversation...and the décor is cool too. Steampunk is always cool.

Legit

That's amazing that they have that meat refrigerator out for all the patrons to see. They know who their clientele is! Looks like a yummy place to pass the time.
