[Eng-Esp] My trip to Los Roques Archipelago, Venezuela / Mi viaje al Archipiélago de Los Roques, Venezuela

avatar
In a summer a few years ago, my daughter and I decided to take this long-awaited trip to the Los Roques archipelago. My daughter told me: pack your suitcase for the great adventure. What a thrill! I had never visited Los Roques, I had seen documentaries about the island on television, I was captivated by its beauty and one always keeps in mind the possibility that this wish may come true.

Well, we were ready to travel. We leave the small town where we live towards the destination. Arriving at the airport we went through the check-up and sat down to eat something, while we waited for the plane we walked through the airport shops so as not to get bored. At last the voice of the microphone is heard calling the passengers that the plane is ready and that it was time to get on. Arriving on the runway, I told my daughter: “I don't see any planes. Where is?" she tells me: "that is the plane with which we are going to travel." My hair stood up when I saw an airplane with seven seats, the truth is that I never imagined that I was going to get there but there was no other option. The cargo crew accommodated people's luggage and we got on. The pilot told us: “Welcome, put on your seat belts and have a good trip”. We took off and little by little the plane reached altitude, we were flying.

In the whole flight over the sea, the boats were barely visible. The flight lasted an hour but about 15 minutes before landing the plane started to make a very strange noise and we all freaked out and fell silent. The pilot didn't say anything either, I wasn't looking out at all, my daughter didn't say anything either, that noise lasted until we finally reached the ground. I took a deep breath and thanked God for his company. Anyway, we left and went to the island town to find the inn where we had reserved. It was near the sea, about 500 meters. The owner was called Joaquina, a lady who lived with her daughter and her son-in-law who took care of everything at the inn, very kind and good people. She took us to our room and we paid for the lodging that was going to be for 10 days.

The plane where we travel / La avioneta donde viajamos

Well, my other daughter was waiting for our call to know if we had arrived safely because a plane had fallen a short time ago and its occupants died, so she told us because she saw it on the news, she knew about it before we traveled but she did not say anything so as not to scare us. That kept my mind busy all the time, then I almost forgot it and said to myself, let's enjoy the holidays. It turns out that when we got to the inn and we were in our room, we heard a very strong wind that seemed to carry everything away, it lasted about an hour and then it started to rain and rain until it stopped and the sun finally came out.

Resting for a while while the rain fell / Descansando un rato mientras caía la lluvia

Without wasting time we put on our bathing suits and went to the beach that was near the inn. We opened the umbrella, sat down for a while and got on the beach, it was so transparent that you could see the little fishes in the background. That beach was so beautiful and quiet that we enjoyed it a lot, we only went out to have lunch the food that we had carried in our bag. Then we sat down to sunbathe, for a while because the sun was very strong. The birds dived to fish and flew over us and beyond that a man swam with his dogs. When the sun went down a little we played rackets until we were tired and later we returned to the inn, we bathed and rested for a while.

We went out to the courtyard of the inn and the lady who owned the inn told us about the town and the beautiful beaches of the place. But she also told us that a short time ago an Italian tourist was murdered on the island and that they didn't know how it happened. That worried us a lot because we didn't know the island either, the owner stayed until midnight watching TV and also watching around in case she saw something strange. She told us: "Don't walk around in the street at night." Thank God, everything was fine, but since she was born there, she knew more than anyone else, although among the people of the town everyone knew each other and when faced with any suspect they called the police.

Many houses and inns are right in front of the sea / Muchas casas y posadas están justo frente al mar

Well the lady made dinner and we sat down to eat the big tasty fish, she was very generous with the food. After dinner we continued talking and making jokes and after a while to sleep.

The next day, as usual, she gave us breakfast and we asked her which beach she recommended, there was one a little further away than the other and we went to that beach, it was spectacular, there was only one couple there but they were already leaving. It was a bit lonely, there were some little houses further on that served us as company, we left our things under a tree that gave us shade and we went into the water. Very clean and without waves and the sky like a mirror, we swam a lot and we also tanned playing rackets on the shore. At noon we sat down to lunch with something simple and fruits and of course plenty of water to drink. After we walked all over that place, we took photos, we collected snail shells and rare colored stones, in the evening we went back.

On the way to the inn, we had company, huge mosquitoes that stuck to us like ticks, difficult to pull off, our bodies were full of bites. Upon arrival, Mrs. Joaquina asked us if we liked that beach and told us that mosquitoes are almost everywhere on the island, but in the face of so much beauty one does not care about that. Well, we shower and wait for dinner. That's how enjoyable they were every day.

Birds come out to fish when the sun begins to go down / Las aves se van asomando para pescar cuando empieza a caer el sol

The next day, which was the third, we went to the same beach, pure sun and beauty, we arrived and the first thing we did was take advantage of the time and enjoy the day swimming. Suddenly, on the shore I see a small snake, I got scared and came out of the water, my daughter was also scared. A man who worked there in an oil industry approached us with his dog and we started talking. He told us that they were not snakes but some fish called moray eels that bite hard but were not poisonous and he told us that there were quite a few on the rocks facing the sea. The man left and we walked for a while on the shore, there were big crabs where the stones were, I tried to grab one and I caught it, I put it in a glass of water and we stayed watching it for a while and taking pictures, then I released it at sea.

Suddenly the sky darkened and it was so fast that we were trapped by the heavy rain for about an hour but thank goodness there was an abandoned house and we took shelter until the rain stopped, then we went quickly to the inn. We didn't go to that beach anymore, it seemed a bit secluded and no people came even though we had a good time there. When we got to the inn, tired of walking, we showered and rested waiting for the dinner that Mrs. Joaquina always served at the same time, about 7:30. After dinner we chatted with the lady while the other guests retired to their rooms.

The next day we spent the whole day until the afternoon on the beach that was near the inn. It was nice that day, we enjoyed it to the fullest, only that our umbrella broke because of the breeze and there was his skeleton. We had a beautiful tree for shade that protected us from the midday sun, which was the most intense and so we spent that day appreciating that magical place that makes you want to come back again.

The next day, Mrs. Joaquina recommended that we visit Cayo de Agua, according to her, something unforgettable, well, we brought something to eat because they didn't have any food service there. We went to the port where the boats leave, I in particular didn't like to ride there, but there was no other way. I remember that several people got on, they gave us life jackets, we had our hats and the boat started. At first the sea was calm but then huge waves began and as it was open sea the boat rose like a mountain and in a single hit it came down violently, I clung to the boat as if I had glue in my hands, telling myself that not even the lifeguard It saves me if I fall into that deep sea, my hip was already hurting from so many blows from the impact, the trip was about an hour but it seemed like hours to me, you looked into the distance and the sea was endless.

We arrive at Dos Mosquises, an obligatory stop before reaching Cayo de Agua to visit the ecological post for the reproduction and conservation of sea turtles. A guide explained everything to us, we took photos and saw all kinds of turtles and in the sea we also saw a large turtle that was dead, the guide told us that a small shark probably attacked it. Everything that the guide showed us we liked. Then we got on the boat again that took us to Cayo de Agua, which was a little further on.

My daughter / Mi hija

Arrived at Cayo de Agua, we got off and sat for a while to rest and look at the beauty of that place, its crystalline and almost virgin waters and all the beauty that God gave it. However, I was scared and I didn't want to go into the water no matter how much my daughter insisted. In one part of the key there was a sand path that separated the sea in two, really to walk around there you have to be very brave because the joining force of the two seas carried you. My daughter did, I stared at her in terror. Being in that place leaves you a satisfaction without equal forever, we were there until sunset and that image was spectacular. It was time to go back and the waves, just as violent and big because at sunset the tide rises but we arrived well, grateful to God the creator of so much beauty of nature. We arrived at the inn very tired and after showering and having dinner we went to bed, not without first telling Mrs. Joaquina how wonderful that trip we will never forget seemed to us.

In the end, we walked to the airstrip to wait for the plane that left at noon and in an hour we were returning to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. From there we took the bus that took us to our city. We arrive tired but happy with so many beautiful things that we live and so many experiences that will remain with us forever. The golden color that we obtained on that island gradually faded but the memories will remain forever.
