The Awakening Bangkok

Hey Hive! Today I’ll share some photos from another light show in Bangkok we went to. This one was a lot bigger and spread around Bangkok. There was a lot of walking and exploring which was quite fun.

The Awakening Bangkok

The Awakening is a massive event that takes place in Bangkok every year. It is spread around a big area in central Bangkok instead of holding place in 1 venue. The starting point was at the central post office. The whole event was sponsored by Johny Walker and you could see light signs everywhere. The post office area had a few spots to view, information where you get your map from and a small food court area in-front of it. From here we were on our journey around Bangkok streets hunting for these light event/spots spread around the streets and buildings nearby.

So the first place we went to wasn't really properly set up, yet there were so many photographers ducking down infront of it taking pictures. When we came closer to see what all the commotion was, we saw this cat sleeping in a weird way right infront, not caring at all about the attention. She eventually got up and moved somewhere else to finish napping.😀

The event involved a lot of walking. It probably took us around 3-4 hours to go to most of the places and we still had some undiscovered ones, that we returned to on a different day.

Other than the map we had, a guide were the Johny Walker lights that would pop up from time to time in the most unexpected of places, just to let us know we are on the right way.

The concepts were so different everywhere. Some places would even let you be a part of the art and add some creativity to your photos. It was a pretty popular event that was visited by more than 200 000 people in the previous year. There were long queues for the bigger, more popular places , while others were left quite empty.

This was pretty cool because you would be the artist behind the background. You could put paints in some water and mix them up, then this projector would throw them on the wall for photos.

The first day we went to the Awakening not all of the places were opened or finished. That was another reason for us to return. Unfortunately back then we didn’t have a good camera or lens that would help with the very dark photos we had to take.

There were usually multiple things to see in different buildings. Some had up to 3-4 different artists works. The artists themselves were around most of these and would explain things. Some other areas were bigger and more popular and had a whole staff associated with them, queue numbers etc.

This one was pretty cool. It was out in the open but to get through it, one would have to walk through a pretty small street. The whole ground area was covered in these moving lights.

That was maybe the most popular place to see. We had to wait 30ish minutes to get in, even on a weekday. We also had very limited time inside. You usually go in as a group of 6-7 people, the door closes behind you and you have 1 minute to take photos.

This was the last place to visit. The car was already there, left for years. It was well lit and decorated with these neon cats though which made it pretty cyber-punkish looking

Wish we had a better camera or at least lower apeture lense with us for this one. Some of the places I wouldn't even show because the photos just aren't good at all. Hopefully there is another event like this this year so we can go around and take some better shots. Anyway I hope you enjoyed todays photo spam! Working on another post from last weekend which I hope to share with you in a few days. Have a nice week meanwhile and I'll see you soon!

They certainly are and this one was mostly out in the opened. So many people were walking around these usually quiet Bangkok streets at this time of the day. :)
